2. MYTH #1:
DOCTORS AND
NURSES WILL HELP
• Usually nurses come in only once an hour
for only 10 minutes for paperwork
• Obstetricians come when it’s time to push
• A birth coach and doula’s job is to “mother
the mother” during labor. Having a doula
means having help for the entire labor and
birth

3. MYTH #2:
MIDWIVES ARE FOR
HIPPIES
• Obstetricians are experts in high-risk pregnancies and
emergency surgery for pregnant women
• Midwives focus on the normalcy of pregnancy and birth
• Midwives are highly trained, experienced, and able to quickly
identify and manage any situations which are outside of normal
• Midwives attend births in hospitals and birth centers, as well as
homebirths

centers, and homebirths
• They provide unbiased answers to questions about all the
options available to pregnant women
• Birth Coaches and Doulas reduce pain and interventions

5. MYTH #4:
MY PARTNER WILL HELP
• Partners often become overwhelmed with the intensity of
labor and birth
• They don’t want to do the “wrong thing” so they often
don’t do anything except sit and watch
• Birth Coaches and Doulas can teach partners how to be
involved
• Birth Coaches and Doulas can be there so partners can
take much needed breaks

6. MYTH #5:
IF I WANT AN EPIDURAL I
DON’T NEED A COACH
• After getting an epidural women must lay in bed, laying
still can slow or even stall labor
• Birth Coaches and Doulas know how to keep labor
progressing even with limited mobility
• They can also help avoid further interventions and
complications

7. MYTH #6:
IF I MAKE A BIRTH PLAN
ALL WILL GO WELL
• Creating a birth plan does not ensure those things will
happen
• When unexpected things happen a Birth Coach and
Doula can provide emotional support
• Birth Coaches and Doulas can also remind you of the
options available when the plan doesn’t go well
• They can also help partners stay calm

8. MYTH #7:
AFTER THE BIRTH, IT’S
ALL OVER
• People often think that once the baby is born, there’s
nothing else to do
• After the birth there are many activities to finish around
the room that may take up to an hour
• Birth Coaches and Doulas can also help establish
bonding, baby’s first feeding, and give newborn care
reminders
