4. MOOCs Defined
Moocs is an internet connect learning
experience which enables large amounts of
learners to access their learning materials and
everything they need digitally, online and free
of charge.

6. 2004 - George Siemons and Stephen Downe’s
developed the theory of connectivism, which
is defined as learning with the role of social
and cultural context.
2008 - The first MOOC was presented at the
University of Manitoba with approximately
2200 learners.
2010 – video’s about MOOCs added to
Youtube by Dave Cormier.
7. 2011 – MOOCs for the college prep skills
helps freshmen prepare for college
requirements (Cormier,2011).
2012 – Harvard’s first MOOC has
approximately 370 000 registraterd learners
(Pappano,2012).
Coursera launches from Stanford: Offers first
XMOOCs (Chen,2012)
The New York Times call 2012 “The year of the
MOOCs.”(Pappano,2012).
8. 2013 – CMOOCs and XMOOCs too numerous
to accurately count.
9. XMOOCs
This MOOC focuses mostly on Instructivist
approaches to teaching as the instructor
along with the support team, record and
provide video lecturer for learning.
Knowledge that learners have acquired are then
practiced through formative testing/
assessment as they are assessed in some sort
of graded activity.
10. CMOOC
This MOOC tends to focus more on
constructivist and connectivist approaches to
learning.
Learning truly happens when learners interact
with authentic materials.
This approach is learner centred.
