The Gifted Glove
My dad has a great love for baseball. He
wanted me to learn how to play it. My
father thought of baseball as a good
American sport for me to learn before
we moved to the US. In 2005, when I
was 12 my dad gifted me a brown base-
ball glove with light brown stitchings
along the edge of the entire glove. My
dad started to teach me how to catch
and taught me the rules of baseball.
It took me a few tries to understand
how to adjust my fingers in the glove
in order to catch the ball. When I would
miss the ball my dad would tell me it’s
ok I’ll get the hang of using the glove to
catch the ball. After many tries, I finally
got the hang of it and caught the ball
for the first time and I felt proud of
myself. I fell many times running while
trying to catch the ball but it was so
thrilling and exciting.By then, I fell in
love with baseball and enjoyed every
catch session I played with my dad.
When we arrived in the US I made sure
that glove came along. I met my friend
Jim a few months after arriving in the
US. He brought me to a baseball game
for the first time, the Mets. I brought my
glove along so I can feel like I was in the
game. While sitting and watching the
game, I was astounded at how far the
ball would go and how the outfield-
ers would scramble to catch it. When
they made the catch with their glove,
it reminded me of when I would catch
the ball with my dad. I couldn’t help
but smile and cheer loudly when they
outed the opposing team’s player.
Every single scratch, tear grooves and
its fading in color on the glove, may
make it look outdated and old but it’s
my personal object of affection which
is truly precious to me. It may not be
an expensive glove but the memories
I have created with my dad, can’t be
replaced. I still use it to this day and still
feels like the first. I want to pass this
glove on to my children so they can
build a love for baseball like my dad has
done for me. To create new memories
of playing catch or baseball for their
lifetime.

The Old Phone
Every time I go to my grandma’s
I carefully observed what she col-
lect. The old phone, Jewelry, pa-
per and the style we left behind in
the early 90’s. The values, fonts,
neutral colors and texture It’s
pleasant to analyze and enjoy the
story every single item carry.
As a child I use to wonder what’s
the valuable reason to keep old
useless objects. However, I re-
member playing with these ob-
jects, it was fun until I break them,
and the feeling of my Gramma’s
hand against my skin, it wasn’t
entertained anymore.
When scrolled back to my mem-
ories, my grandma’s antique tele-
phone it was my favorite, the num-
bers inside the circles, the shape
of the handle it was like a L with
amazing patterns. Therefore, now
as a young adult I learn to appre-
ciate elderly objects, letters, or
money, because it contains a dif-
ferent past story no one ever con-
sider to listen.

Type Problem 3
Set the title in a serif font. Drop it out (white type) of a
black box. Size the box with the title to the exact width of 2
columns. Position it in a way that enhances your design. Set
the body copy with solid leading, justified, sans serif. Make
the body copy box 2 columns wide. The height of your text
box will be variable depending on the size, and leading that
you choose.
Type Problem 4
Set the body copy in a sans serif font with exaggerated positive lead-
ing. Use justified alignment. Make your type box 3 columns wide. The
type size is up to you. Set the title flush left with the text in the bold
version of the san serif font used for the body copy. Make it 10 points
larger that the body copy. The size, style, and position of the author
name is up to you.

Hopping to my past
As a young child, there weren’t many things that I liked to do other than play
outside or play video games, which I wasn’t the best at the time. Unlike the
boys at my age during the time I didn’t do any boyish activities nor have any
friends who were boys, instead I was surrounded by mostly women which is
basically what my family consisted of with the exception of my dad but we
never really did any father-son bonding, we probably did I just cant remem-
ber. Since I grew up in a girly atmosphere I ended up getting a fascination
with rabbits which was deemed a very girly thing for young boys to like but
I didn’t really care.It all started when I got a stuffed rabbit,I don’t remember
from who, but it was something that gave me lots of joy and comfort, and
was the closest thing to a best friend I had at the time.
The rabbit I’d come to love didn’t really have a name but if I think hard
enough I’m pretty sure I just referred to it as “my rabbit”.What ever I did
or where ever I went, be it eating breakfast or going to sleep I brought my
rabbit with me everywhere,I couldn’t find myself to separate from it but like
all good things they weren’t gonna last forever. As a result of me dragging my
rabbit everywhere it started to fall apart and it ended up getting rips and
tears, there were even moments when it’s arms fell off which was the most
heart-breaking moments in my young life.As I got slightly older, my rabbit
looked far from what it originally looked; there were holes and rips on all
over it body, it’s arms and legs had lost all of its cotton stuffing, and its eyes
were chipped. When I started to actually notice that it’s condition wasn’t so
great I decided that it was time to put it away before anymore damage could
come to it. It was a really sad moment for young me to put him away so to
make up for it my mom took me shopping to look for another one.
Now that I look back at those times,I kind of wish I could go back and revisit
those moments to see the smiles I had on my young face with that rabbit. I
still have that very same rabbit with me hidden inside a closet hiding behind
all my clothes but its more faded than it used to look. For some reason I
can’t find it in myself to get rid of it since its part of memories that have long
left my mind and it is the only thing that connects me to my past,or reminds
me of what once was the present and is now the past. There may come a
moment in my future when i might have to throw it or forget it all together
but i don’t see that happening any time soon.As of now I would like to the
hold onto the memories that this ol’ rabbit has in store so that i may never
forget the connection I have with my past.

Type Problem 5
The body copy will be used twice. One time in san serif with positive
leading (flush left/ ragged right). Then repeated with a serif font and
exaggerated negative leading (flush right/ragged left)in a separate
text box. This text will be almost illegible. Use all 4 columns of your
grid. Also, pull a short quote or phrase from the story and place it on
a curved path. Be sure the tracking and kerning on this line make for
good even letterspacing. The treatment of the title and author name is
up to you.

My Journal
The one thing that has kept me sane
up until this day is my journal. Over
the years it’s become more than just
a journal, it’s a place to share my
innermost thoughts, a stress reliever
when I am overwhelmed, a peace-
maker when I am angry, a guide
when I have no one to speak to, and
most importantly a reliable friend.
When faced with the toughest of
days, my journal is there to listen to
me. As the ink flows onto the pages
I find solutions within my problems.
By simply writing how I feel, what
makes me feel that way, what
caused a certain situation, I can
clearly see my errors, what needs
to be changed, and any flaws in
situations. Whereas on the brightest
days, my journal is there to docu-
ment the wonderful feelings, ac-
complishments and success. When
I was chosen for the Mayor’s Office
Internship, or passed all my classes
for the semester I look back at these
entries when my mindstate isn’t the
best to relive and find a sense of
achievement again.
There is a power, and sense of con-
trol in just writing my own thoughts
down. It has given me the ability
to become more aware not only of
myself and my habits, but of my
environment and those around me.

Mr. Fluffy
As I go through my old stuffs of memories, I found one of my most
favorite item that brought me back so much memories throughout
my life which is my stuffed animal who I named Mr. Fluffy. He was
really a special stuffed animal compared to all of my other stuffed
animal I have owned throughout the past 11 years of my life. He was
one of my best friend especially for a 7 years old kid.
Every time I see him sitting in the corner of my room It’s always bring
me back so much memories of when I
first got him from my mom. She gave
it to me because it was from her boss
daughter who was giving him away. I
can’t never forget the day she gave him
to me and how excited I was when I first
got him, I was jumping when my mom
gave it to me. It was a funny thing for
me to calling him Mr. Fluffy especially
since I was only 7 years old with a very
unique imagination. But I would hug
him all the time whenever I feel scared
like when I first had my own room with
no parents with me. I was even afraid of
the dark but whenever I hugged him I
felt safe and warm cause when I felt scared, I would always run to
my parent’s room and climb into their bed in the middle of the night
even the nightlight I had in my room didn’t help me. I would bring
him everywhere with me especially whenever I go sleepover at my
cousin at the Hampton or sleepover at my best friend house.
There is never a day I would ever forget bring him. He was always by
my side no matter what. I would even hug him whenever I have a bad
day or when I feel upset. Even as child I would always talk to him as if
he could talk back to me. As I grew older, I didn’t need him like I used
as a child but he was still my favorite stuffed animal and today he is
sitting in my corner of my room where I could see and remember
those days as a child. It really brought me back so many memories
throughout my childhood. I really hope ill be able to pass down Mr.
Fluffy to my future children one day.

A Mountain and Dad
The mountain was always calm. I
remember the voice of my dad who
encouraged me when I was out of
breath by the breeze and the fresh
air. My dad was
always busy with
his work. Never-
theless, when he
has a short break,
he asked me to go
to the mountain.
I was born in Korea which is a moun-
tainous country. If you move a little
through industrialized skyscrapers,
you can climb a well-organized
mountain at an incredible height.
It was not always good suggestion
when I was a kid. I often wanted to
oversleep on weekends, but I was
not able to persuade my dad to stay
at home, so I used to go climbing
somehow. At that time, it seemed that
just climbing the mountain was at the
time of conversation with my family.
Before departure, we always stopped
by a restaurant to get bentos(packed
meals) and Korean sprite for each of
us. That means the mountain climb-
ing began. It was not always easy to
climb every time, so sometimes I
told my dad with blunt words. But,
my dad seemed to have encouraged
me with smiles and warm words
every time. As I was young and
lacking in patience, I could have
climbed mountains and
grew up with encour-
agement, care, and love
from my dad.
Now that I an adult. I
feel the past I climbed
mountains with my father seems to
be a good hobby at the same time
as my memory. It comes not only
to climb the mountain, but also to
encounter some hardships. It seems
to have a good habit of remember-
ing memories with my dad, having
time for my own time, regulating
the physical health, and having
time to calm my mind. When I
climb the mountain, I still remem-
ber my dad. The mountains that
have always been with my dad are
my driving force to lead me.

Grandpa’s
Film Camera
The film camera from my grandpa is
such a precious present for me. My
grandpa was a photographer when he
was young. He loves taking photos for
the family with his old film camera. Un-
fortunately, his hand is always shaking
because of ages, so he can’t take pho-
tos anymore. Few years ago, he found
his old film camera from his cabinet,
and gave it to me as
a present. He knew
that I love photogra-
phy, and hope I could
use his camera. “I
don’t want to see
it just lying in the cabinet and become
useless.” He said to me.
However, I didn’t use this camera after
I received it, because I didn’t know how
to use a film camera. It was not easy
as a digital camera or a phone camera.
When I cleaned my room after I gradu-
ated, I found that camera again. I took a
careful look at it, and found there were
some finished rolls in the camera bag. I
was so curious about those photos, so I
took them to the photo processing shop.
Few days later, I picked up the photos
and tried to find out what were inside. I
started crying when I open that bag: all
the photos were about me when I was
still a little child. I seemed that all he
wanted to record was me. Those pho-
tos always touch my heart even when
I think of them now. I think this camera
is full of my grandpa’s love to me. It
reminds me my grandpa’s words, so I
decided to learn how to use it and take
some photos for my grandpa.
Now he has to live
in the hospital, and
begins to forget
things. His health
is getting worse
day by day, but
I still keep photographing his daily
life, just like how he did when I was a
child. I haven’t processed even one of
these rolls that I finished. This camera
and the rolls of film have become the
treasures for my grandpa and me. I
don’t know if he would forget me and
even himself one day. If that day really
comes, I’ll process all the rolls of film
and show him the photos that I take
for him. It might help him to think of
how much I love him.

hinking back to my childhood there was always several
framed cherry blossom flowers all over my house. Growing
up I did not think much of it, except just some decor items
placed across the house. Now they are some of the most valuable
items I own. My great-grandparents are of Japanese decent and in
their country cherry blossom represents the cycle of life, death and
rebirth. When the cherry blossom die the petals fall off the tree and
the wind blows the petals in a beautiful way. During World War II
a lot of soldiers like my grandfather would decorate their aircrafts
with images of cherry blossoms before going on what seemed to be
suicide missions at the time. Before my great-grandfather had gone
off to the war he picked several cherry blossoms and gave it to my
great-grandmother and promised he would return one way or other.
My great-grandmother would stay at home praying that one day her
husband would return safely and in the mean time she would col-
lect cherry blossom flowers and petals and frame them all over the
house to remind her of her husband.
The Framed Cherry Blossoms
After the war my great-grandmother immigrated to America with her
kids with barely anything except some clothes, however, she brought
the framed cherry blossoms. Since then, the beautifully framed flow-
ers has been passed down from generations to generations. The
frames where kept in great conditions with the occasional dust that
collects on the tops of the frames. These framed flowers have been
with my family through every move, birth, special occasions and un-
fortunately death.
Although to most people when they see these old framed cherry
blossoms they might think its not valuable and not worth anything or
its not anything special. To me and my family they are some of the
most valuable and most cherished items we own. I’m very grateful
to have such a meaning item in my house that has been past down
for a few generations and I can’t wait to pass the framed cherry blos-
soms down to future generations.

Set a “raised” (Stick-up) cap at the beginning of the first paragraph.
Make it bold sans serif. Then set 4 to 6 words of text transition in the
same sans serif bold font, then set the remainder of the text in a serif
font. Make the text flush left/ragged right. Make the text box the
width of 3 columns of your grid. The second paragraph of the text must
indent on the left and right. The size of the indents are up to you. Add
extra space above and below this paragraph. Creatively use lines or
bands as design elements throughout the design. Make the title type
white and position it in a solid black box. Position it in the box so that it
looks centered and balanced with the spaces around it. Make the title
type larger than the text type. Position the box with the title creatively
somewhere above the text. Or, you can have the text “wrap” around
the title box in some way. The size is up to you.

to separate from it but like all good things they weren’t gonna last
forever. As a result of me dragging my rabbit everywhere it started
to fall apart and it ended up getting rips and tears, there were even
moments when it’s arms fell off which was the most heart-breaking
moments in my young life. As I got slightly older, my rabbit looked
far from what it originally looked; there were holes and rips on all
over it body, it’s arms and legs had lost all of its cotton stuffing, and
its eyes were chipped. When I started to actually notice that it’s
condition wasn’t so great I decided that it was time to put it away
before anymore damage could come to it. It was a really sad moment
for young me to put him away so to make up for it my mom took me
shopping to look for another one.
Now that I look back at those times, I kind of wish I could go back and
revisit those moments to see the smiles I had on my young face with that
rabbit. I still have that very same rabbit with me hidden inside a closet
hiding behind all my clothes but its more faded than it used to look. For
some reason I can’t find it in myself to get rid of it since its part of memories
that have long left my mind and it is the only thing that connects me to my
past, or reminds me of what once was the present and is now the past. There
may come a moment in my future when i might have to throw it or forget it
all together but i don’t see that happening any time soon. As of now I would
like to the hold onto the memories that this ol’ rabbit has in store so that i
may never forget the connection I have with my past.

Type Problem 11
Use a sans serif font for both, title and text. Set the title flush left/rag-
ged right, in all caps with the tracking set at 200. The size and position
of the title are up to you. Kern the title carefully for even and balanced
letterspacing. Set the text in 2 text boxes. Use a justified alignment.
Link the text boxes so that the text flows from the first to the second text
box. Position the second text box at least 1” higher than the first text
box. The width of each text box should be 2 columns. Set up a baseline
grid that matches the leading in your text boxes. Lock the text to the
baseline grid.

As I go through my old stuffs of mem-
ories, I found one of my most favor-
ite item that brought me back so much
memories throughout my life which is my
stuffed animal who I named Mr. Fluffy.
He was really a special stuffed animal
compared to all of my other stuffed ani-
mal I have owned throughout the past 11
years of my life. He was one of my best
friend especially for a 7 years old kid.
Every time I see him sitting in the corner
of my room It’s always bring me back
so much memories of when I first got
him from my mom. She gave it to me
because it was from her boss daugh-
ter who was giving him away. I can’t
never forget the day she gave him to
me and how excited I was when I first
got him, I was jumping when my mom
gave it to me. It was a funny thing for
me to calling him Mr. Fluffy especially
since I was only 7 years old with a very
unique imagination. But I would hug him
all the time whenever I feel scared like
when I first had my own room with no
parents with me. I was even afraid of
the dark but whenever I hugged him I
felt safe and warm cause when I felt
scared, I would always run to my par-
ent’s room and climb into their bed in
the middle of the night even the night-
light I had in my room didn’t help me.
I would bring him everywhere with me
especially whenever I go sleepover
at my cousin at the Hampton or
sleepover at my best friend house.
There is never a day I would ever for-
get bring him. He was always by my
side no matter what. I would even
hug him whenever I have a bad day
or when I feel upset. Even as child
I would always talk to him as if he
could talk back to me. As I grew old-
er, I didn’t need him like I used as a
child but he was still my favorite stuffed
animal and today he is sitting in my
corner of my room where I could see
and remember those days as a child.
It really brought me back so many
memories throughout my childhood. I
really hope ill be able to pass down Mr.
Fluffy to my future children one day.

your grid. The text must be justified. Place an image on the right side
of the text so that it is aligned with the right margin of your text box.
Wrap the text around the bounding box. Be careful with the text wrap.
Keep the outset space between the text and image consistent with at
least .25 inch between the image and the text. Add an image credit.
The style and position of this credit is up to you.

He wanted me to learn how to play it. My father thought of baseball as a good American sport for me to learn before we moved to the US. In 2005, when I was 12 my dad gifted me a brown base- ball glove with light brown stitchings along the edge of the entire glove. My dad started to teach me how to catch and taught me the rules of baseball. It took me a few tries to understand how to adjust my fingers in the glove in order to catch the ball. When I would miss the ball my dad would tell me it’s ok I’ll get the hang of using the glove to catch the ball. After many tries, I finally got the hang of it and caught the ball for the first time and I felt proud of myself. I fell many times running while trying to catch the ball but it was so thrilling and exciting.By then, I fell in love with baseball and enjoyed every catch session I played with my dad. When we arrived in the US I made sure that glove came along. I met my friend Jim a few months after arriving in the US. He brought me to a baseball game for the first time, the Mets. I brought my glove along so I can feel like I was in the game. While sitting and watching the game, I was astounded at how far the ball would go and how the outfield- ers would scramble to catch it. When they made the catch with their glove, it reminded me of when I would catch the ball with my dad. I couldn’t help but smile and cheer loudly when they outed the opposing team’s player. Every single scratch, tear grooves and its fading in color on the glove, may make it look outdated and old but it’s my personal object of affection which is truly precious to me. It may not be an expensive glove but the memories I have created with my dad, can’t be replaced. I still use it to this day and still feels like the first. I want to pass this glove on to my children so they can build a love for baseball like my dad has done for me. To create new memories of playing catch or baseball for their lifetime. MinKoo Kim Type Problem 1 The title must be set in a sans serif font. The size and position of the title is up to you. Set the body copy in a serif font no larger than 11pt. The rabbit I’d come to love didn’t really have a name but if I think hard enough I’m pretty sure I just referred to it as “my rabbit”.What ever I did or where ever I went, be it eating breakfast or going to sleep I brought my rabbit with me everywhere,I couldn’t find myself to separate from it but like all good things they weren’t gonna last forever. As a result of me dragging my rabbit everywhere it started to fall apart and it ended up getting rips and tears, there were even moments when it’s arms fell off which was the most heart-breaking moments in my young life.As I got slightly older, my rabbit looked far from what it originally looked; there were holes and rips on all over it body, it’s arms and legs had lost all of its cotton stuffing, and its eyes were chipped. When I started to actually notice that it’s condition wasn’t so great I decided that it was time to put it away before anymore damage could come to it. It was a really sad moment for young me to put him away so to make up for it my mom took me shopping to look for another one. Now that I look back at those times,I kind of wish I could go back and revisit those moments to see the smiles I had on my young face with that rabbit. I still have that very same rabbit with me hidden inside a closet hiding behind all my clothes but its more faded than it used to look. For some reason I can’t find it in myself to get rid of it since its part of memories that have long left my mind and it is the only thing that connects me to my past,or reminds me of what once was the present and is now the past. There may come a moment in my future when i might have to throw it or forget it all together but i don’t see that happening any time soon.As of now I would like to the hold onto the memories that this ol’ rabbit has in store so that i may never forget the connection I have with my past. I remember the voice of my dad who encouraged me when I was out of breath by the breeze and the fresh air. My dad was always busy with his work. Never- theless, when he has a short break, he asked me to go to the mountain. I was born in Korea which is a moun- tainous country. If you move a little through industrialized skyscrapers, you can climb a well-organized mountain at an incredible height. It was not always good suggestion when I was a kid. I often wanted to oversleep on weekends, but I was not able to persuade my dad to stay at home, so I used to go climbing somehow. At that time, it seemed that just climbing the mountain was at the time of conversation with my family. Before departure, we always stopped by a restaurant to get bentos(packed meals) and Korean sprite for each of us. That means the mountain climb- ing began. It was not always easy to climb every time, so sometimes I told my dad with blunt words. But, my dad seemed to have encouraged me with smiles and warm words every time. As I was young and lacking in patience, I could have climbed mountains and grew up with encour- agement, care, and love from my dad. Now that I an adult. I feel the past I climbed mountains with my father seems to be a good hobby at the same time as my memory. It comes not only to climb the mountain, but also to encounter some hardships. It seems to have a good habit of remember- ing memories with my dad, having time for my own time, regulating the physical health, and having time to calm my mind. When I climb the mountain, I still remem- ber my dad. The mountains that have always been with my dad are my driving force to lead me. Dasom Kim

My grandpa was a photographer when he was young. He loves taking photos for the family with his old film camera. Un- fortunately, his hand is always shaking because of ages, so he can’t take pho- tos anymore. Few years ago, he found his old film camera from his cabinet, and gave it to me as a present. He knew that I love photogra- phy, and hope I could use his camera. “I don’t want to see it just lying in the cabinet and become useless.” He said to me. However, I didn’t use this camera after I received it, because I didn’t know how to use a film camera. It was not easy as a digital camera or a phone camera. When I cleaned my room after I gradu- ated, I found that camera again. I took a careful look at it, and found there were some finished rolls in the camera bag. I was so curious about those photos, so I took them to the photo processing shop. Few days later, I picked up the photos and tried to find out what were inside. I started crying when I open that bag: all the photos were about me when I was still a little child. I seemed that all he wanted to record was me. Those pho- tos always touch my heart even when I think of them now. I think this camera is full of my grandpa’s love to me. It reminds me my grandpa’s words, so I decided to learn how to use it and take some photos for my grandpa. Now he has to live in the hospital, and begins to forget things. His health is getting worse day by day, but I still keep photographing his daily life, just like how he did when I was a child. I haven’t processed even one of these rolls that I finished. This camera and the rolls of film have become the treasures for my grandpa and me. I don’t know if he would forget me and even himself one day. If that day really comes, I’ll process all the rolls of film and show him the photos that I take for him. It might help him to think of how much I love him. Growing up I did not think much of it, except just some decor items placed across the house. Now they are some of the most valuable items I own. My great-grandparents are of Japanese decent and in their country cherry blossom represents the cycle of life, death and rebirth. When the cherry blossom die the petals fall off the tree and the wind blows the petals in a beautiful way. During World War II a lot of soldiers like my grandfather would decorate their aircrafts with images of cherry blossoms before going on what seemed to be suicide missions at the time. Before my great-grandfather had gone off to the war he picked several cherry blossoms and gave it to my great-grandmother and promised he would return one way or other. My great-grandmother would stay at home praying that one day her husband would return safely and in the mean time she would col- lect cherry blossom flowers and petals and frame them all over the house to remind her of her husband. The Framed Cherry Blossoms After the war my great-grandmother immigrated to America with her kids with barely anything except some clothes, however, she brought the framed cherry blossoms. Since then, the beautifully framed flow- ers has been passed down from generations to generations. The frames where kept in great conditions with the occasional dust that collects on the tops of the frames. These framed flowers have been with my family through every move, birth, special occasions and un- fortunately death. Although to most people when they see these old framed cherry blossoms they might think its not valuable and not worth anything or its not anything special. To me and my family they are some of the most valuable and most cherished items we own. I’m very grateful to have such a meaning item in my house that has been past down for a few generations and I can’t wait to pass the framed cherry blos- soms down to future generations. Lisa Zhang
