Really simple syndication (RSS) is an XML format used to publish frequently updated digital content. RefWorks has a built in RSS feed reader that allows users to add any feed and store multiple feeds, running them at their convenience to import references into RefWorks in the same way as searching an online database or catalog. To add a feed, copy the RSS feed URL, paste it into RefWorks, click add, and then import references from the feed into RefWorks or a specific folder.

For example, we are on the feed page of nature.com http://www.nature.com/webfeeds/index.html Feeds are generally either a link or an orange box that says RSS or XML. At this site the feeds are links, so we will need to copy the link we want.

5. Use RSS Feeds to import data into RefWorks Right mouse click the feed link to copy. Select ‘Copy Shortcut’ Go back to your RefWorks account.

Select the records you want to import and either click the ‘Import’ button or the ‘Importto Folder’ drop-down. You will be asked if you want to import the selected reference(s). Click OK.

9. Custom RSS Feeds Some data vendors even offer you the ability to make custom RSS feeds from search strategies. This is just to give you an idea of how the custom feed works.

10. Custom RSS Feeds Type in your search strategy and click ‘Search’. The results of the search are displayed. One of the options available in the toolbar is RSS. Click the RSS hyperlink.

11. Custom RSS Feeds A drop-down menu is displayed. You can change the number of items displayed. Choose ‘Create RSS’ Choose XML
