SPACE COLONIZATION
What is
it?
Space colonization
• also called space settlement, space
humanization, or space habitation.
• is the concept of permanent, autonomous
(self-sufficient) human habitation of
locations outside Earth.
• It is a major theme in science fiction,
as well as a long-term goal of various
national space programs.
Emerging ethical
dilemma
What is the emerging ethical
dilemma about?
• The act of permanently establishing
human habitation outside of Earth is
known as space colonization. It is
driven by various factors, including
geopolitical and strategic
considerations, tourism, resource
exploitation, improved communication,
scientific curiosity and discovery, and
weather and climate observation
interests.
Emerging ethical
dilemma
Given that the population of Earth is
growing and we are running out of
resources, this is a crucial issue for
humanity's future. A planet that has
been colonized would have vastly more
resources and new places to dwell.
However, risks associated with space
travel include dangers to astronauts,
threats from space debris to our
physical and financial security, and the
possibility of contamination of the
ecosystems we visit or our planet after
space missions. Also, indigenous life
forms on the planet could perhaps suffer
if extraterrestrial planets were to be
colonized.
For instance, the finding of flowing
water on Mars indicates that the planet
may harbor living forms that would be
obliterated if they came into touch with
Factors or events
led to this dilemma
What factors or events
led to
this dilemma?
• NASA Administrator Michael Griffin
identified space colonization as the
ultimate goal of current spaceflight
programs, saying
‘’ In the long run, a single-planet
species will not survive ... If we
humans want to survive for hundred of
thousand of million of years, we must
ultimately populate other planets. Now,
today the technology is such that this
is barely conceivable. We're in the
infancy of it. ... I'm talking about
that one day, I don't know when that
day is, but there will be more human
beings who live off the Earth than on
it.’’ Theoretical physicist and
cosmologist Stephen Hawking argued for
space colonization as a means of saving
humanity. In 2001, Hawking predicted
that the human race would become
extinct within the next thousand years
unless colonies could be established in
space. In 2010, he stated that humanity
faces two options: either we colonize
Factors or events
led to this dilemma
Here are some factors that led
to Space colonization
• climate change
• global nuclear
•annihilation
•biological warfare
•ecological collapse.
The main purpose of space
colonization is the long-term
survival of human civilization
and terrestrial life. By
developing alternative
locations off Earth, the
planet's species, including
humans, could live on in the
event of natural or human-made
disasters on our own planet.
implications
The implications of this
dilemma for society
• Humans have made a mess of Earth. We
should clean it up instead of
destroying a moon or another planet.
• Technological advancement into space
can exist alongside conservation
efforts on Earth but space is
inhospitable to humans and life in
space, if even possible, would be
miserable.
Source: Britannica ProCon org (2023)
implications
Humans would have a host of illnesses
to deal with due to climate
differences on Mars or the Moon:
cancer, radiation illnesses,
reproductive problems (or sterility),
muscle degeneration, bone loss, skin
burns, cardiovascular disease,
depression, boredom, an inability to
concentrate, high blood pressure,
immune disorders, metabolic disorders,
visual disorders, balance and
sensorimotor problems, structural
changes in the brain, nausea,
dizziness, weakness, cognitive
decline, and altered gene function,
among others. Astronauts who have
spent just a year in space have
demonstrated irreversible health
problems.
Source: Britannica ProCon org (2023)
implications
• Humans have a right and a moral
duty to save our species from
suffering and extinction.
Colonizing space is one method of
doing so, but we should control
ourselves to preserve the Earth.
• Space colonizing would be very
expensive. If humanity will stay
on Earth and just let our
astronaut go to space it would be
much better. As the humans left on
Earth, we must do our part , be
disciplined in order to save and
preserve the planet where we live
in.

The importance of moral
and ethical issues
surrounding innovations
in science and technology
• Morality - principles which
concerns the distinction
between right and wrong or good
and bad
• Ethics - Moral principles which
governs a person's behavior or
in conducting an activity
The importance of moral
and ethical issues
surrounding innovations
in science and technology
• It is the necessary approach for a
funneled direction in trying to
provide benefit for the common
good
• Constructive criticism is a
necessary element in achieving a
better outcome in the body of
knowledge and for society
• With questioning the moral and
ethical issues surrounding
innovation, it creates bounderies
The importance of moral
and ethical issues
surrounding innovations
in science and technology
Take for example: If we are to
innovate a technology which can
eradicate causes of increased
rate of climate change, without
encoding morality and ethics, it
finds out the main cause for
climate change is mankind, then
this becomes a dilemma for the
humankind.
The importance of moral
and ethical issues
surrounding innovations
in science and technology
• It creates, run and utilize space systems for the
advancement of science, technology and applications
in the fields of space and the terrestrial
environment, as well as to provide cutting-edge
goods and services. Advances in architectural
design, the generation of alternative fuels, 3D
printing and low-gravity manufacturing are just a
few of the advantages that space colonization will
bring us either directly or indirectly.

members of the general public with a keen or casual
