The Outsiders by Eric Church (2013) TRACK REVIEW
1. The Outsiders by country artist Eric Church. This song was released in October 22nd 2013;
it is the title track and lead single from Eric’s fourth studio album entitled “The Outsiders” ,
which will be released on February 11th 2014.
Artist Background
This album will be Eric’s first since his highly successful third studio album entitled ”Chief”,
which won Album of the Year from both the ACA and CMA.
Since that album however It has seemed that Eric has made more ermines than friends in the
country music industry, because his sometimes cocky and rude matter. This includes being called
out as “fake” by Shooter Jennings (Waylon’s son) on the song “Outlaw You”, off of his 2013 album
entitled “The Other Life”.
Track Review
In an interview with “Taste Of Country”, Eric Church said that this upcoming album is “It’s a bit of a
statement. I wanted to send a message with this album that it’s gonna be different, it’s gonna be
another level. Later in the interview he went on to describe the musical style of this album as a mix of
Waylon Jennings and Metallica.
The “statement” style that Eric refers to with the entire album is defiantly evident on this opening track
as this song really different than he has ever done; this song has a loud, raw and more aggressive sound
that is a points just pure rock n roll.
This rock concept seems to be the brainchild of the tracks producer, Jay Joyce, who seems to
bring a hard-nosed rock style along with a flexible production that allows his to be hands on and
hand off, depending on the type of band he is working with.
o Joyce has worked in both the rock and country music world with bands like The
Wallflowers, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Rubyhorse, Cage the Elephant, The Warren
Brothers, Eric Church, and Little Big Town.
Back to the song:
The song opens with a very slow vocal and electric guitar buildup and quickly explodes in the main
chorus, filled with a mix of loud drums, and swirling guitars, and catchy solo and group vocals that see
Eric proclaiming his “outsider status” with the line “that's who they are and how they roll.”, then sees
the song drastically slow down, with the use of a groovy, distorted, low guitar solo and seems to bring
the song to a close; that is until the band starts up again at the 3 minute mark, this time breaking into a
crazy rock n roll, black Sabbath sounding and inspired jam session filled, before the song finally draws to
a gentle close with the line “That’s who We Are”
2. With this song Eric is basically setting himself and his legions of fans against all of his critics who
believe that he should conform to the traditional beer drinking, sappy country songs or namedrop
songs like he did with a couple tracks on 2011’s “Chief”, rather we are going to give an anthem that all a
lot of people came relate too and I bet country music will still play it.
