1. Rock N Roll Jesus by rock artist Kid Rock (2007) his 7th studio album.
This album is the second of “Kid Rock“s southern rock and country catalog“, the
other this self entitled album “Kid Rock“ (2003) which features the hit
“Picture“ with Sheryl Crow.
Album Background:
This album shifts away from the hip hop genre to other genres (mainly country
and southern rock)
This album was the first Kid Rock album to go #1 in the first week.
I would say this album created a rebirth of Kid Rock“s career, as he appeared on
the cover of Rolling Stone and Larry King Live to talk about the album.
All Summer Long Success:
All Summer Long became this album“s lead single and a global hit (with its
charting spot at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100)
This song features a majority mash up of Lynyrd Skynyrd“s “Sweet Home Alabama“
and Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" but also features samples of Michael
Jackson“s “Billy Jean“ (with the drums) and Steve Miller“s "Take the Money and
Run" (acoustic guitar).
Kid Rock and Lil Wayne performed his song at the CMA Awards. That made history
because Lil Wayne became the first hip hop artist to perform at the awards, as
he did a mid song freestyle rap.
He was He was nominated for Best Rock Album and Best Male Pop/Rock Performance
for "All Summer Long" at the 2009 Grammys, though he lost in both categories“.
Track by Track Review:
1. Rock N Roll Jesus “ Like the drum beat tempo to this track, and snappy
rough vocals and jamming out instrumentals (especially towards the end of the
track). Sounds a lot like All Summer Long at least with the beats. This song
seems to be directed towards Kid Rock“s haters and a shout out to music in
general where he basically saying that he belongs in the rock genre and will
bring its back to his former glory.
2. Amen “ Like the calm vocals and choiry vocals to this song. This song
seems to be about Kid speaking about the world today and his concerns or the
really of the world today“s (whether it be directed towards violence, the wars,
the government (especially), or simply knowing the difference between right and
wrong. Like the lyrics on this song, can really get you thinking and your life
and how to possibly help others who need help.
3. All Summer Long “ This song is just an upbeat feel good summer song when
you“re out having fun. I love the fact that its kind of a tribute to southern
rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd“s Sweet Home Alabama.
4. Roll On “ Like the narrative vocals and slow tempo to this song. In this
song Kid Rock is reflecting on his life and music career. It can be seen as a
song about enjoying every moment because life is short. In features some great
saxophone/instrumental work and great backing vocal through the entire album
really.
5. So Hott “ Love the aggressive style to this song. Both lyrically and
musically (love the drum and guitar driven beat). This song is very sexual, it
seems to be classic Kid Rock, it reminds me a lot of “Cowboy“, his rap-rock
infused song. The song is about a guy who sees s a girl and just wants to have
sex, (which means skipping the relationship). This is one of the most memorable
songs off this album because of its rough vocal style and obvious sexual
meaning.
6. Sugar “ Like the country rock, acoustic opening. I also love how the song
explodes into a rock/hop hip jam session that features Kid Rock rapping some
very creative rhythms, not the best I“ve heard though; this one again really
reminds me of “Cowboy“. Another very aggressive/sexual song where Kid Rock is
basically demanding sex. Like the group vocals towards the end of the song.
7. When U Love Someone “ I like this song positive message of how you should
treat other you respect and/or love. This song has a country feel.
8. New Orleans “ Love the southern blues and jazz influence to this song..
Very different from the rest of the album. A tribute to the south and New
Orleans. A memorable song off his album. This song proves that Kid Rock can
perform in any genre.
9. Don“t Tell Me U Love Me “ A southern hop hip feeling track, like the
rough angry vocals. Love the vocals they are very catchy.
10. Blue Jeans And A Rosary “ A classic acoustic country song, they lyrics and
2. vocals are very depressing. This song is a reflection about a girl who believed
in and saved Kid Rock from going crazy after he left home. I like the honesty of
this song.
11. Half Your Age – Like the payback –talk– to the opening, it has a classic
southern country sound, the lyrics are very catchy. This song talks about a sort
of revenge for one of Kid Rock–s ex–s who left him so now he–s dating a nicer
younger girl.
12. Lowlife (Living The Highlife) – I feel like I–ve heard the opening riff
before. . The instrumental and vocal work on this track is great. This song is
just a humorous and rocky way to finish off a fairly good album. Its also kind
of a reflection song about Kid Rock–s troubled past.
Overall I really liked this album. Its a solid release
– I like how the lyrics are catchy and tell about life while staying pretty
funny.
– I like the southern rock tempo to this album. After a few listens this
album has grown on me.
– This album really does prove that Kid Rock can write music for any genre
and be somewhat successful
Downsides
– It may take a couple listens of this album to truly enjoy it, especially
if you are used to listening to Kid Rock as a rapper.
To recap I really did enjoy this album, the instrumental work and hip hop beats
are solid and Kid Rock–s vocals fit in the songs nicely. There are some tracks
that get kind of boring towards the end, because they go a little too long. With
that being said I would say that this album really does prove that Kid Rock can
write music for any genre and be somewhat successful. My review: 8/10 for some
slower (boring) parts.
