Introduction
Overview
With the adoption of Canvas for Tempe Union High School District’s learning management system one
question that routinely comes up during training is the ability to upload quizzes that a teacher has
previously made in a word processing software such as Microsoft Word. The software from Respondus
allows teachers to edit a text document to upload into Canvas as a quiz or a question bank.
This instructional guide is designed to introduce the content on how to format a document and upload it
into Canvas via Respondus.
Rationale
With adoption of new technology, software doesn’t always interface. Teachers expressed frustration
about on to recreate their previously created test in another platform. Additionally, if a teacher were to
leave our district or our district were to stop using Canvas, if teachers still create their quizzes in Word
first, they would have those materials for themselves.
Instructional Objectives
The instructional objective is for participants with a guide, to be able to use the Respondus software to
upload quizzes to Canvas. This requires participants to have 100% mastery on the following objectives
1. Properly format the follow types of question in Word for uploading into Canvas
a. Multiple choice
b. Multiple response multiple choice
c. True/False
d. Essay
e. Matching
f. Fill in the Blank
2. Configure Respondus to upload correctly
3. Properly upload file into Canvas
To demonstrate mastery, participants will provide a url of their quiz in Canvas and the Word document
used in the upload process.
Assessment Instruments
Posttest
Due to the fact that the participants must demonstrate mastery over procedural skills, the posttest will
require participants to “show” completion of said procedures.
Lesson Sequence
Introduction
1. As a veteran teacher, you’ve created an assessment in Word. Would you like to be able to
upload this into Canvas?
2. Respondus gives users the ability to upload Word documents as a quiz in Canvas and the you
will be learning how to use this software.
3. The objectives for this course are the following:
4. 3

i. Multiple choice
ii. Multiple response multiple choice
iii. True/False
iv. Essay

d. The Americans
6. What the completed example would look like:
Type: MR
2. Who fought against each other in the French and Indian War?

3. For the response use ‘a. T’ and ‘b. F’. It is important that True comes first or the program will
read the question as a multiple choice question.
6. 5
Example
a. T
b. F
4. Mark the correct answer by using a *
Example
a. T
*b. F
5. What the completed example would look like:

Objective 2: Configure Respondus to upload correctly
Loading the document

it’s time to open the Respondus software
2. After opening the software to click the
“Import Questions” button.
3. Choose the document type under the
“Type of file” drop down. Generally
participants would select the ‘Microsoft

you have previously made.
5. Select, “Create a new document, named:”
for the “Choose where to add the new

choosing.
6. Using a stem is optional but highly recommended as it gives the questions a title that uses the
stem the user inputs and the question’s number from the document. So if this was a quiz on
Colonial America, I might want to have the stem entitled “Colonial”.
7. Click the preview button, to give a preview of the questions that will be uploading.

a lab computer, do not have check this box.
