1. Postproduction Showreel
For the beginning of the Showreel I decided to gather all the different types of clips to use. I
have gathered clips from my documentary of the Digital age and the Short Film I helped
create during my Work experience.
Draft One
For my first draft of my showreel I gathered all of my clips that I wanted and needed in my
showreel. Before I started to dissect my documentary and short film I had to import all of my
media I am going to use for the showreel.
I added my business logo,
documentary, short film, and
music.
It was a long process as I sat
through my documentary and short
film and picked out all the clips, I
believed that would be suitable for
the reel but also ones that I could
show of my editing skills with.
I was able to gather the clips want I wanted with using the blade tool in Davinci programme,
this tool allowed me to cut clips from the original clip with the sound. It is a very
easy tool to use and very simple as I just need to hover over where I wanted to cut
and click the mouse and it is done.
When I gathered all the clip, I
wanted to use in the showreel, I
decided to put them in some sort of
order what I can easily transition
them it the next clip.
All the clips I gathered; all had
their originally audio on, so I
decided not to add the audio I
wanted on for my show reel as I
wanted to focus on the clips instead
of the audio. I know that the audio
is very important of a show reel as
it helps set the tone the pace of it but the clips themselves is what employers and people will
see more than hear the sound.
For all of my clips, I rotated between my documentary and my short film clips in order to
alternated keep the audience interested and set a different tone for the video. I wanted to
rotate as I can show people that I can do different types of media btu also different genres.
Feedback Draft One
I decided to gather feedback on my first draft as I
wanted to gain peoples opinions on the clips I used
and length of them.
The first question I asked was how they liked the
clips most of the people said it was in the middle of
2. Postproduction Showreel
very good and very bad, which tells me that most do like the clips but need to be improved.
The second question I asked people was did they like the length of the clips in order to see if I
can make the showreel any better if the
clips were a different length. Most of
them answered that they did not like the
length but also need to shorten them to
make it look more professional and
snappier. This feedback is very helpful as
I need to make it shorter them to make the
show reel more efficient while showing of
my editing and filming skills to future employers.
The final question I asked what I needed to add
to my showreel, as I wanted to audience
feedback on what I have to add to improve about
it. Majority of the feedback said that I have to
add an intro to my showreel as well as an outro
and more skills I have learnt to show of my
editing skills I have gained.
I know for my next one I must an intro and an
outro so people know who the showreel belongs
but also to make the showreel more professional.
Draft Two –
Creating an Intro
I first began with create the background of my logo on the slides, I achieved this by
using many different types of graphics and stickers.
I experimented with all different transitions in order to achieve a effortless look of
the graphics and the titles slowly coming into to screen. I originally was going to
use the transitions of wipe, wipe is where everything appears on the screen starting
from the left to right, but I found the Fun transition for the full page where it
everything comes up from the bottom their graphics to the top. Also I was able to
add the fade in transition to all the graphic to make it look as they fade in then rise
it too make it look much more smoother.
3. Postproduction Showreel
For the next part of the intro I decided to add in what I can do as many other
showreels do that in order to show employers what skills they have. For my first
draft I decided to see if I could create an effect of the word "Editor, Photography
and Director" could scroll across the screen in time with the music. I was able to
complete it but it felt too slow and did not look like much editing skills or effort
went into the slide compared to the first one. So I changed the ideas to make a
swipe happen after every word in order to show my editing skills and transitions I
can do.
I separated the words and put them on different slides and add the color swipe in
between them in order to make it seem more lively and more impressive for future
employers.
I ensured to make the swipe go the same way and that they were similar colors the
background and logo.
I tried my hardest to match the swipe to the music in order to make it more
cohesive and more professional.
After creating my two intro types I decided it would be best If I looked back at my showreel
and decided to see what clips needed to
be moved and shortened. I also
gathered more clips from the Grey
Lady short film as I know that I could
get more clips out of it to use in my
showreel.
I add the beginning of my showreel
into the software in order to link the
audio up to the showreel. It was very
difficult to match the audio up with the clips as I wanted to have the showreel music on beat
with the clips changing. So, I decided to give up on the audio in order to focus on the clips as
it was taking up to much of my time.
4. Postproduction Showreel
I had to use the blade tool in order to take some time of the clips, so the clips were not too
long, but I also remembered that I can change the speed of the clips. Changing the speeds of
the clips, make the showreel look more professional as it shows that I can use editing
software and easily match the audio to the clips.
For my second showreel, as I said I changed a lot of my clips around to make them more
organised as for the first bit of the reel I wanted to do clips related to my work on short films,
I did not gain access to the second short film I made in time too add clips from it, and the
second part of the documentary I have produced and directed myself.
I wanted to try and do something different in my second showreel, I wanted to do clips that
linked together through movement.
These clips are the ones I have chosen as they all have a small amount of focused light of a
torch but also the way the clips are they go through the same motion. I figured I could edit the
clips together to make them link into each other seamlessly.
Draft Two Feedback
To get peoples feedback on my showreel I created another google forms asking questions
about my showreel.
I asked the same question I asked in the first feedback survey in order to see if I improved the
showreel from the first one.
Majority of the people answered
that they like my showreel, I made
them rate on a scale of 1 to 5. The
feedback was very helpful as
compared to my last feedback I
have improved significantly; I am
very happy with the feedback.
The second question I asked was how they liked the length of the clips in the showreel. The
main reason why I asked this is
because in the first feedback they said
they didn’t like the length of the clips
as they were too long and made the
showreel too long.
Majority of the answers was yes, they
liked the length of the clips giving me the
indication for my next edit I should not
change the length of the clips. Some
answered no and change some, giving me
the indication that some of the clips need to
5. Postproduction Showreel
be changed and change the length of the clips. I will have decide which slips need to be
changed.
The final question I asked was what I need to add, just to see if there is anything else to show
of my skills. Many said that I needed an outro on my showreel, in order to show more of my
editing and design skills. Some other mention to add skills, more clips and demonstrating
skills, I will work on this for my next draft.
Draft Three/ Final edit
In order to create my final edit of the showreel I went back through the feedback of my last
survey in order to create a list of thing I need to add and do to improve the showreel. I first
created an outro, what many suggested I do, in Canva the same as where I created my intro. It
is an easy software to use. I first started with a simple yellow page just like my intro and
began placing my logo and logo background on it in order to be able to identify who created
the showreel. Then I did many different types of animations of each graphics and see what
was the best animation for my outro and showreel.
For my final showreel edit, I went back into Davinci and added my intro in to the video
alongside the music I chose for my
showreel. The reason why I chose this
music as the tune was very upbeat and
would work well with many of the
transition, I had but also, I believed it was
the best one to keep my audience
interested in my showreel.
It was very hard to add the audio in and
match it to some of the clips though as
some where different pace compared to the audio meaning some of the clips had to have their
length changed or the speed of
the clip increased or decreased.
Majority of the clips are based
on the music line but some of the clips are not in order to extend the showreel but also I
wanted some clips longer to keep the audience engaged and see the quality of my work.
Final Feedback
After creating my final showreel, I decided the best option will be the create an survey on
google documents in order to see if my changes to my showreel they suggested have
improved it.
The First question I asked was did they like
the showreel to gather an understanding if
overall did they find my showreel
enjoyable. Majority of them answered yes
giving me much positive feedback that they
liked the showreel.
I was very happy with this feedback as I
know that I would appeal to some of my audience but all the rest is.
The next question I asked was do you think can be improved in order to see If there was
anything to improve. I left this question as a short answer on the survey as I wanted people to
write what they thought I could improve to give detail. Majority said there was nothing for
6. Postproduction Showreel
me to improve but some did have some feedback based on the music and some of the clips
which is informs me that I need to
add more clips and change the
audio. I will take this feedback,
but I do not think I will no act
upon it as I believe the showreel
has more positive feedback and
the clips and music all fit the tone
I am trying to set with the
showreel. I will try and add more
clips when I have filmed or accessed to clips, so there is more of a selection and not the same
two media forms that I have.
The last question I asked was if the music was to the audience liking as I wanted to know
there personal opinion. I gave them
the option to either selection yes or
no or write a small sentence about
what they do not or do like about it to
gain more feedback. Most of them
said that they liked the music as it
was upbeat and catchy, informing me
that the music is very popular with
all the people. I really liked the
music what I chose so it is very nice
to see positive feedback on it.
