W
ith the success of three
Pocktoberfests and the ever-
expanding programme at
Pocklington Arts Centre entertaining more
and more people, the PAC team decided to
take on a new venture to stage their very
own festival establishing a new identity and
brand with the main focus being on music
and comedy. The organising committee of
PAC plus members of the local community
have worked together to make the Platform
Music and Comedy Festival a reality. This
festival will take place on 16, 17 and 18 July
in the town’s historic Old Station building
which was in use until 1965 and is now
owned by Pocklington School.
James Duffy of Pocklington Arts Centre has
been telling us all about the plans for the
Platform Festival.
“We are extremely pleased to have secured
three fantastic headline acts in 5 times
Grammy Award winner Mary Chapin
Carpenter for Thursday 16 July, Perrier award
winning comedian Al Murray - The Pub
Landlord - for Friday 17 July and BBC Radio 2
Folk Award winners Bellowhead for Saturday
18 July. The line-up reflects the reputation
PAC has gained within the arts industry since
opening in 2000 and highlights the calibre of
artists we are now able to attract to the town
“We have been huge admirers of Mary’s work
for many years now and it is truly an honour
to be working with her in July. She has
won five Grammy Awards, was named the
Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist
of the Year in 1992 and 1993 and in 2012 was
inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall
of Fame. Her compositions have also been
covered by a diverse assortment of artists
including Joan Baez, Cyndi Lauper, Trisha
Yearwood and Dianne Reeves and has also
collaborated, on record and/or on stage, with
the likes of Joan Baez, Shawn Colvin, Dolly
Parton, the Indigo Girls and Tony Bennett.”
“We are delighted to have The Shires
perform at the festival, as they have already
sold out three performances at PAC within
the last year. Chrissie and Ben launched
their album last week at the prestigious
Country2Country Festival at the O2 Arena
in London and when they came off stage
on Sunday evening they discovered they
were the UK’s first ever
country act to have an
album in the Top 10,
with their debut release
Brave. Obviously we
are extremely pleased
to have been there
from the very start
with the band and look
forward to celebrating
with them.”
“In addition to two
indoor stages within
the main building of
the Old Station there will be an outdoor
stage hosted by Access to Music (York).
The stage will provide a platform for ATM’s
students to showcase their considerable
talents and be a wonderful addition to the
event. With audience figures expected to
exceed 2000+ over the three days and we
firmly believe the festival will be highly
beneficial to the local economy with
increased trade for local bars, restaurants,
hotels and camp sites.”
And what about the food and drink on offer
during the festival? James explains,
“The award-winning Brass Castle Brewery
along with York Wine & Beer Shop will be
sourcing a diverse range of drinks for the
festival and we are delighted to have some
fantastic regional caterers including Smokin’
Blues Smokehouse
& BBQ providing
southern state street
food, Bánh mì Booth
a Yorkshire-based
purveyor of delicious
Vietnamese-inspired
street food and
noodles and Judson’s
of Pocklington.”
“We are extremely
grateful to the support
of Mark Ronan and his
staff, especially Andrew
D’Arcy and Paul Bennett, at Pocklington
School for the use of The Old Station for the
festival. It is perfect location, in the heart of
the town and the building has a wonderful
intimate atmosphere.”
The event will be making charitable
donations to Help for Heroes, the RNLI and
local charities/community groups.
