to 3 ½ years in age, and were both
male and female.

14. The needs of children are different from the needs of adults. Children are NOT
simply “tiny adults”, and we must not treat them as such.
It is up to the helper to figure out the needs of the child as best we can, and forge
a treatment to suit their needs.
Very young children lack the verbal skills to understand many things, so an
eclectic mix of the following treatment techniques will be used.
Play Therapy.
Art Therapy.
Demonstrations of Concepts and ideas using cartoons, and drawings.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Developmental Approach (based on the needs of each child individually).
Family Counseling sessions.

15. Play Therapy is a form of counseling or psychotherapy that uses play to
communicate with and help people, especially children, to prevent or resolve
psychological trauma.
Play Therapy is generally employed with children aged 3-11 and provides a
way for them to express their experiences and feelings through a natural, self-
guided, self-healing process.
In the case of the children and infants who have been molested, raped, and
abused by John Burbine, Play Therapy will be employed in helping the children
create their Trauma Narrative to lessen the psychological impact of the abuse.

22. Art Therapy is the therapeutic use of art making, within a professional
relationship, by people who have experienced trauma, illness, or other challenges
in living.
In this case, the children are so young that some of them will not have
sufficient vocabularies for communicating what has happened to them. Art
Therapy will give these children a voice, and allow them to create their trauma
narrative. Art Therapy helps children cope with the trauma in a safe way using
paints, crayons, clay, and many other mediums.

28. We must be ever mindful, as helpers, that we do not
attempt to FORCE a modality of treatment on a client,
especially a child who has been sexually abused. We
MUST be where the child is, and FORGE the treatment
around the individual needs of the child. An
ECLECTIC approach to treatment is crucial in helping
to soften the trauma, and help the child find their way.

31. No matter how hard it is for you handle the rape
of your child, it is much more difficult for your
child.
Do not react or act out when you hear your
child’s trauma narrative, you must not damage them
further.
Being calm, supportive, and strong, these are
your main duties.
And remember, you may need to seek individual
counseling for yourself. There is no shame in
needing help.
32. Give the community factual information about child sex-abuse.
Set up support groups for the children who have been victimized, and a group for
the parents of those who have been victimized.
Perhaps a volunteer-staffed hot-line that has information on local counseling
resources for anyone who may need them.
Activity is one of the best ways to feel better. Get the community active in
educating their children about safety and prevention of sexual abuse. Concepts
like how to tell the difference between “good touch” and “bad touch”, and how to
say no. Stress to them that an open dialogue with their children is crucial.
Leave a support structure in place, and utilize existing support services and
resources.

children. He was convicted of indecent assault against
a child in 1989, and accused of sexually abusing young
boys in 2005 and 2009.
There are thousands of legislative acts and laws that
govern when, where, and how a child-molester has to
register, but there are very few laws that actually
protect the children.
John Burbine has been able to rape and molest his
way through 3 decades because the laws are deficient.
45. Child Sexual Abuse
Child sexual abuse matters are generally handled by state and local authorities,

Section 23A. Whoever unlawfully has sexual intercourse or unnatural sexual
intercourse, and abuses a child under 16 years of age and:
(a) there exists more than a 5 year age difference between the defendant and the
victim and the victim is under 12 years of age;

victim where the victim is between the age of 12 and 16 years of age; or
(c) at the time of such intercourse, was a mandated reporter as defined in section
21 of chapter 119, shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for life

In researching the laws and regulations on sex-offenders in general, and child-
molesters in particular, I was struck by the complete lack of humanity in the laws.
There are more laws protecting the child-molesters than there are protecting the
children.
Things are getting better, yeah, better for the child-molesters. They have

relative impunity via electronic means.
