The document summarizes the opening three minutes of a film. It describes how the opening uses a close-up of an emotionless imprisoned man speaking directly to the camera, establishing suspense. It then cuts to a wide shot of a van entering an urban area, intercutting between the van and statues to intrigue the audience. Transitions between shots are fading cuts and the close-up of the man has no editing to focus on what he's saying. The opening shot and city setting create an ominous atmosphere through their dull colors and false sense of security.
2. To begin with there is use of narration
from one of the main characters. This is
diegetic. It helps build suspense and
creates an understanding of what is
going to happen.
This is then paired with the use of non-
diegetic ‘Hindi like’ backing track.
3. The very first shot is a close-up of what seems to be
a man in an isolated prison. He is speaking directly
at the camera with little emotion. This uses
elements of the enigma code, making the
audience inquisitive about this characters motives.
This shot is then followed by a van entering an
urban area. This is shown through the use of a
wide-shot which establishes the scene.
As the car is shown, there are mid shots of statues.
The camera flicks between the van and the statues
very quickly. This, again sets the enigma code as
the audience are intrigued as to what these
statues are trying to suggest in relation to the
moving vehicle and the imprisoned man.
4. There is use of fading transitions from the
close-up of the imprisoned man and from
the wide shot of the van entering the city.
Quick cuts between the moving vehicle
and the statues.
The close-up of the man shows no use of
editing. It may be like this because the
director might have wanted the audience
to focus primarily on what he was saying.
5. The opening shot is very dull, as it is a man in
what seems to be a prison cell. The colours are
dark greys, which is a colour used amongst
many thriller films as it suggests a serious
atmosphere. The man shows minimal facial
expressions and is very serious. This creates
questions for the audience.
The city portrays a stereotypical urban settings
and seems to be during the beginning of the
day as the sun is rising. This gives a false sense
of security to the audience because many
people would assume thriller films are set at
night time.
