SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Students must:
• Provide their own transportation to the hospital
and clinical internships second semester
• Complete a physical, titers, TB, flu and other
immunizations, drug test and background check
for second semester
• Supply their own regulation shoes by October; one set of
scrubs are provided, students encouraged to purchase a
second set
• Recommended for high school Seniors

JOB MARKET INFORMATION:
The forecast for job growth in health care is excellent!
This is a secure employment area little affected by economic
instability, providing high job satisfaction and personal reward.
Starting salaries for entry level positions range from $18-$22 per
hour in hospitals, $12-$15 per hour in clinics, and higher for
advanced skills and training. Employers look for good
communication and social skills, excellent attendance, initiative, a
respect for protocol compliance, critical thinkers and problem-
solvers, positive/caring attitudes, and solid work ethics. Bay Area
nurses are the highest paid nurses in the country, with an average
salary of $117,000 per year.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Collette Betters was named a Santa Clara County Teacher of the Year for MetroEd. Her work history includes being an Emergency
Room Technician, Certified Massage Therapist, Phlebotomist, Firefighter, DNA Lab Technician, Medical Unit Clerk, CPR and First Aid
Instructor. Ms. Betters has won four summer fellowships with the Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education, and the National
Science Foundation, and has participated in MetroEd’ s Summer STEM Academy. At Ohlone College she was a Teacher’s Assistant
for Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology. Ms. Betters holds a Bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University, and is completing a
Master’s Degree in Public Administration.
