2. PROJECT
OBJECTIVES:
•To implement a real
time numerical weather
prediction (NWP)
forecasting system.
•Validate the data from
the model using data
from other sources.
•Disseminate the
graphical data on a
website (intranet).
Introduction
A real time(NWP)
forecasting system is
one which uses
mathematical equations
and models of the
atmosphere and oceans
to simulate the
evolution of the
atmosphere in a given
period of time, usually
days.
3. Dynamics and Physics Parameterizations:
•In the dynamics options, motions of the atmosphere; Vertical and
Horizontal also the gravity wave drag option was turned off because the
domain that was to be modelled on does not include high range altitudes.
•Then the physics options were chosen as follows:
Cumulus scheme - Kain-Fritsch convective parameterization
Radiation schemes - Shortwave radiation : Goddard scheme
- Long-wave Radiation : RRTM
By the Stephan Boltzmann equation E= ɛ Ϭ T4
Surface Layer scheme - Monin-Obukhov similarity theory
4. Domain Creation - The Domain was created over lower
latitudes or areas in Southern Africa namely ; Botswana,
RSA, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland.

7. CONCLUSION
The project objective of implementing a real time numerical
weather (NWP) forecasting system was met.
The models data was validated using observations obtained
from the Department of meteorological services.
The data was disseminated through a website (intranet).
The model worked relatively well given that the forecasted
parameters and observed data were not that much different,
thus to improve its capability, needs to be compared to other
operational models such as the Consortium for small scale
models (COSMO).
