The Risk Management Process
• Hazard Identification
The potential to cause harm. Harm including ill
health and injury, damage to property, plant,
products or the environment, production losses or
increased liabilities.
• Assessing the Risk
Risk is the likelihood or probability that a person
will be harmed or experience adverse health effects if
exposed to a hazard or that property will be damaged
or lost.
• Risk = Severity x Likelihood

Controlling Risk
Some measures are : ( from most to least preferred )
• Elimination – eliminate the hazard from the
workplace
• Substitution - substituting a hazardous substance or
process with a less hazardous one.
• Engineering controls - installing machine guarding
or enclosing a noisy machine.
• Administrative controls - applying a permit-to-work
system or lock-out and tag-out procedures.
• PPE - provision and use of these equipment, AND
• SWP – Safe Work Procedures

Recording the significant findings of the risk
assessment.
• What the task is
• Who is responsible/supervisor
• Where the risk assessment applies, who is
affected
• List of hazards
• List of precautions
• Details of safe working procedures
• Emergency procedures
• Reference to other associated risk assessments
i.e. COSHH, manual handling, PPE etc.
