We could all have predicted this with our magical Big Data analytics platforms, but it seems that Machine Learning is the new hotness in Information Security. A great number of startups with ‘cy’ and ‘threat’ in their names that claim that their product will defend or detect more effectively than their neighbour's product "because math". And it should be easy to fool people without a PhD or two that math just works. Indeed, math is powerful and large scale machine learning is an important cornerstone of much of the systems that we use today. However, not all algorithms and techniques are born equal. Machine Learning is a most powerful tool box, but not every tool can be applied to every problem and that’s where the pitfalls lie. This presentation will describe the different techniques available for data analysis and machine learning for information security, and discuss their strengths and caveats. The Ghost of Marketing Past will also show how similar the unfulfilled promises of deterministic and exploratory analysis were, and how to avoid making the same mistakes again. Finally, the presentation will describe the techniques and feature sets that were developed by the presenter on the past year as a part of his ongoing research project on the subject, in particular present some interesting results obtained since the last presentation on DefCon 21, and some ideas that could improve the application of machine learning for use in information security, especially in its use as a helper for security analysts in incident detection and response.

We will discuss and play with thermal cameras, multi-spectral cameras, high-speed, and 3D range-sensing cameras and camera arrays. We will learn about opportunities in scientific and medical imaging, mobile-phone based photography, camera for HCI and sensors mimicking animal eyes. We will learn about the complete camera pipeline. In several hands-on projects we will build several physical imaging prototypes and understand how each stage of the imaging process can be manipulated. We will learn about modern methods for capturing and sharing visual information. If novel cameras can be designed to sample light in radically new ways, then rich and useful forms of visual information may be recorded -- beyond those present in traditional protographs. Furthermore, if computational process can be made aware of these novel imaging models, them the scene can be analyzed in higher dimensions and novel aesthetic renderings of the visual information can be synthesized. In this couse we will study this emerging multi-disciplinary field -- one which is at the intersection of signal processing, applied optics, computer graphics and vision, electronics, art, and online sharing through social networks. We will examine whether such innovative camera-like sensors can overcome the tough problems in scene understanding and generate insightful awareness. In addition, we will develop new algorithms to exploit unusual optics, programmable wavelength control, and femto-second accurate photon counting to decompose the sensed values into perceptually critical elements.

The subject invention pertains to an apparatus and method for collecting 2-D data slices of a specimen. Embodiments can incorporate a lapidary platen and an image recording system to image a specimen. The lapidary wheel platen can provide an imaging plane such that an image can be taken as the lapidary wheel platen abrades a surface of the specimen. A specimen mount can maintain the surface of the specimen properly aligned in the image plane. The imaging system can be a continuous recording system such as a video camera, a discrete recording system such as a flatbed scanner, or combinations of continuous and discrete recording systems to simultaneously collect two distinct data sets. The 2-D data set(s) can then be processed to create intricate 3-D color models.

In this keynote presentation, Dr. Kanade shares his experiences and lessons learned in developing a vast range of pioneering computer vision systems and autonomous robots, including face recognition, autonomously-driven cars, computer-assisted surgical robots, robot helicopters, biological live cell tracking and a system for sports broadcasts. Most researchers, when asked their fondest desire, respond that they want to do good research. If asked what constitutes “good research,” they often find it difficult to give a clear answer. For Dr. Kanade, good research derives from solving real-world problems, delivering useful results to society. “Think like an amateur, do as an expert” is Dr. Kanade's research motto: When conceptualizing a problem and its possible solution, think simply and openly, as a novice in that field, without preconceived notions. When implementing a solution, on the other hand, do so thoroughly, meticulously and with expert skill. In his research projects, Dr. Kanade has met and worked with people from diverse backgrounds, and has encountered many challenges. An emerging paradigm for the processing of data streams involves human and machine computation working together, allowing human intelligence to process large-scale data. We apply this approach to the classification of crisis-related messages in microblog streams. We begin by describing the platform AIDR (Artificial Intelligence for Disaster Response), which collects human annotations over time to create and maintain automatic supervised classifiers for social media messages. Next, we study two significant challenges in its design: (1) identifying which elements must be labeled by humans, and (2) determining when to ask for such annotations to be done. The first challenge is selecting the items to be labeled by crowdsourcing workers to maximize the productivity of their work. The second challenge is to schedule the work in order to reliably maintain high classification accuracy over time. We provide and validate answers to these challenges by extensive experimentation on real- world datasets.

This our Twelfth semiannual report on the global Cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin is the world’s largest special purpose supercomputer. And it is globally decentralized. Millions of nodes all run the same open-source code to secure the Bitcoin network, create value, and put new transactions onto the distributed ledger. The latest Top500 list has just been announced at the ISC 2024 conference in Hamburg, and once again the Frontier supercomputer with 1.2 Exaflops peak performance is number one on the list. If assigned to SHA-256 hashing, Frontier would provide only the equivalent hash rate of about three cabinets of the latest high-end Bitcoin mining systems, costing less than 0.1% of Frontier’s cost. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, has pointed out that GPUs are two orders of magnitude slower than the 5-nanometer technology of custom ASICs used for Bitcoin mining today. He makes the point that the Bitcoin network is unassailable by all of the hyperscale computing resources combined in AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure cloud data centers today.

Because observability is such a broad topic – and often something we learn on the job – it can feel like there’s too much to learn at once. But you don’t have to tackle everything and can start with the basics and build from there! Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack. No matter what tooling is in place, there are still observability fundamentals that developers should know. That’s why I’ve put together a primer on the different telemetry types, when to use them, how to understand the data journey, and what to look for in time series graphs.
