13. Establishing HCIN Networks
HCIN Networks was incepted on the
grounds of providing robust internet
services to the corporate sector that
lacked reliable services. āIn last 3-4
years of my career in Telecom ļ¬eld, I
noticed, there is huge demand for
reliable and stable managed internet
leased line services. The demand and
supply gap seemed to grow further
with only a few telecom giants
providing reliable, stable and on time

Although the demand was huge,
company faced several challenges to
place a strong foot in the market in its
early days. One of the biggest
challenges Vikas recalled was getting
the license to start providing internet
services to the corporate sector.
The second challenge Vikas explained
was the global pandemic that has
impacted the global economy since its
announcement by WHO in March
2020. When HCIN Networks started its
operations in August 2019, just after
six months the company had to pass
the hurdles of series of lockdowns due
to the COVID-19 pandemic.
āDue to COVID-19 many businesses
and establishments had to shut down
while others had to opt for remote
working to ensure social distancing
initially due to which the company lost
30-40% of its customers. This was a
huge setback for the company at the
start,ā Vikas shared.
However, his ambition to pass these
hurdles and strongly establishes the
companyās roots in the market helped
Vikas ļ¬nd a solution to move forward.
Shortly after the lockdown was
imposed in India in March 2020, the
company acquired La Pointe Telecom
Solutions and continued its operations
under HCIN Networks.
Overcoming the pandemic of
challenges
Acquiring the company and ļ¬nally
establishing HCIN Networks was only
the ļ¬rst hurdle that the team overcame
together. What came next was the
biggest challenge any business faces at
the start ā to acquire customersā trust.
āWe were new in the market and we
started providing internet services to
businesses and enterprises.
Establishing a brand by gaining trust
in this sector was a huge challenge for
us,ā Vikas said.
However, HCIN Networks and its team
passed the next hurdle with reliable

āIn the last 3-4 years of career in
Telecom when I was a Vice President of
an ISP, I noticed multiple companiesā

installation and implementation of

ever thought that the application area of IoT can be so
huge. The technology can connect numerous objects
including cars, kitchen appliances, baby motoring, and the
list endlessly goes on. These objects can be connected by
embedding sensors in the devices.
The sensors communicate with the connected devices
through the internet to monitor or exchange information. It
creates a harmonious communication between people and
things.
With the help of IoT technology, the physical things can
share or collect information by cloud, low-cost computing,
mobile technologies, analytics, or big data with the
minimum involvement of humans.

transmitting the data from the physical world to the digital
world are considered as āsmart objectsā.
The main purpose of IoT is to use smart objects to enhance
the lives of people and digitalise the world. In IoT
technology, the physical world and the digital world meet to
collaborate and build a better future ahead.
Evolution of IoT
Technically, IoT technology was launched in the year 1999
but it was not used widely in that period. The practitioners
and researchers from academia and industry were brought
together in March 2008 in the ļ¬rst IoT conference for
sharing the knowledge. In that year, IoT was considered as
one of the six disruptive civil technologies by the US
National Intelligence Council.
The Cisco Business Solutions Group (CIBSG) stated in its
white paper in 2011 that it can be said that IoT was truly
born between 2008 and 2009 as in this period, the number
of people using the internet were less than the number of
things connected with it. The ratio of things to people
calculated by CIBSG increased from approximately 0.8 in
2003 to 1.84 in 2010.
Thereafter, Cisco released a number of educational
materials on IoT. It also started taking initiatives for
marketing and attracting clients to adopt the technology.
Later on, Ericsson and IBM joined this race with Cisco.
Gartner included IoT in the Hype cycle for emerging
technologies, which were on the rise in 2011. A report
released by IDC in 2013 forecasted the IoT market to grow
at a CAGR of 7.9% and reach $ 8.9 trillion by 2020.
Infrastructure Required for IoT
Hardware: The hardware requirement consists of
controllers or sensors to collect data from the devices.
These sensors are embedded in the objects to perform the
required task.
Entire IoT system needs Software: The software required
in the technology are hosted on the cloud. This software is
responsible for collecting the data from the sensors and
controllers. It also makes a decision based on the data
collected by sensors.
Complete IoT system needs Connectivity: In IoT, the
connection can be built between hardware and the cloud
through routers or gateways. This step can be an
intermediate step after connecting hardware in some
systems. It creates a way to transfer the data to the cloud or
to receive instructions from the cloud.

cable services business in Ahmedabad
and Vadodara and formed GTPL.

consistently and is the second-largest
multi-service operator (MSO) in India
today, serving an estimated 10.8+
million households in 1000+ towns
across 15 states in India with a
presence in Gujarat, West Bengal,
Maharashtra, Goa, Rajasthan, Assam,
Jharkhand, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh,
Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Odisha, and
Telangana.
Currently, more than seven lac active
customers across diļ¬erent states of

What kind of challenges have you
faced while entering the internet
services space?
During the initial period of operations,
oļ¬take of broadband services was
limited to selected cities and premium
customers due to the limitations of
availability and acceptance. Customers
were just getting used to using
narrowband data through mobile
phones as well as state-owned service
providers.
Fast changing technology, high
infrastructure cost, and physical
connectivity posed major challenges
for us while making an entry into the
broadband market space. The adoption
of GPON technology has helped us
overcome the challenge of providing
high-speed unlimited internet services
to our subscribers.
How much was your

challenges imposed by the pandemic
and what were the steps taken by
you to curb the damages all the
while helping your clients and
maintaining the safety of your
employees?
The year 2020-21 will forever be
remembered as a period of challenges
and uncertainties caused by the
pandemic, which threatened mankind
with a once-in-a-lifetime predicament.
People were forced into isolation as
quarantine was imposed on multiple
occasions. They learnt to take
advantage of connectivity tools that
enabled them to study and work from
home, access entertainment, shop for
essentials, utilise telehealth, and
connect virtually with others. At GTPL

Data usage and penetration of wired
broadband in India is at a mere 6%
currently. Considering that there is a
huge latent opportunity for internet
services, GTPL Broadband is poised to
expand aggressively and aims to be
one of the leading broadband service
providers across India.
What is the current industrial
scenario of the internet services
space?
The wired broadband penetration has
seen steep growth owing to the
pandemic related restrictions. As per
TRAI performance indicators report
released for Janury-March-2021, wired
broadband has grown by 16% in the
last four quarters to touch a subscriber
base of 26 Mn. As compared to the
total households in India, wired
broadband penetration is still at a

same report, the wired broadband
subscriber base is at a mere 3% of the

broadband is continuously increasing
due to OTT, e-commerce, banking,
gaming, and everything from home.
On the other end, new-age technology
