Language has the power to influence people’s perception
and understanding of the world around them. It bridges the
gaps created by geographical, religious, cultural, and
educational differences found all around the world.
That’s why language translation has become a vital
component in today’s globalized economy. It enables
people from different parts of the globe to mingle and share
information. Whether you’re an entrepreneur targeting a
new section of the global marketplace for expansion or a
traveler aboard in a foreign country, having a language
translator is vital for communication.
When you’re talking to people from another country whose
language you don’t understand, it helps to have someone on
one hand who can act as an interpreter. Language
translators are trained to speak and translate from one
language to another fluently and with ease.
Language translation services provide different parties with
the ability to communicate and share ideas without a
language barrier. Through translation, you can easily
explain complex subject matters to another person in their
native tongue.
The study of language translation teaches how people make
meaning from the things they read or hear. As an
entrepreneur, you must build relationships with your global
clients by personalizing your messages for each of them in
a way that feels personally relevant to their life and culture.
Personalized content is crucial for building trust between
your business and its target customers. Language translation
helps in understanding the cultures and attitudes of different
people around the world. Businesses don’t exist in a
vacuum, and you cannot build a relationship with your
customers without understanding their traditions and value
systems.
Moreover, interpretation permits effective communication
to take place between individuals throughout the world.
They act as protectors for cultures, couriers for transmitting
knowledge and allow better communication for business in
the global economy. Indulging in the odyssey of the
establishments that are providing the perfect solutions that
ensure flawless communication, Insight Success features

ehind every venture is a mission that ignites its
Bpurpose and ties the business and its customers. A
mission that resonates with the public is a promi-
nent factor leading to business growth and serves as a
foundation that distinguishes the enterprise from others.
Striving every day to make this world a better, more
inclusive and accessible place for the deaf and hard of
hearing communities with its services and technology, ZP
Better Together dedicates itself to the mission that every
conversation matters, and that communication access is a
universal human right. A leading provider of communica-
tions solutions, including video relay and interpretation
services for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, ZP Better
Together is deeply committed to ensuring that the deaf
st
community has the same access to 21 century telecommu-
nications that the hearing community takes for granted each
and every day.
Sherri Turpin, CEO of ZVRS & Purple Communica-
tions, divisions of ZP Better Together (ZP), is a bold
social impact leader who led ZP to be recognized as a Best
Place to Work for Disability Inclusion for three consecutive
years (2020, 2021, 2022) and was named a Best CEO
honoree by the Austin Business Journal. Sherri shared more
about her purpose-driven leadership, her commitment to
diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and the mission that is
central to ZP’s services in an interview with Insights
Success.
Below are the highlights of the interview:
What was the initial idea behind the inception of ZP
Better Together?
Today our organization, ZP Better Together LLC, is one of
the leading providers of the most innovative
communications services for the deaf and hard of hearing
community. ZVRS and Purple Communications are
divisions of ZP Better Together. In 2017, under my
leadership, ZVRS acquired Purple Communications. We
wanted to bring together two major providers of Video
Relay Services (VRS) and, importantly, create a viable #2
in our industry to ensure increased competition, true
provider choice, and expansion of services and product
innovation for the deaf community.
Our company’s roots, though, began in 2000 with the
national launch of a company by the name of CSDVRS. At
its core, CSDVRS was developed “by and for” deaf and
hard of hearing individuals. Dedicated to the principle that
every conversation matters and that communication access
is a universal human right, it put the community first and
was the very first organization to commercially develop and
perfect video relay applications for deaf and hard of hearing
consumers, essentially creating the now-established video
relay services industry that we know today.
Today, we are known as ZP Better Together, but our “by
and for” the deaf community roots remain central to who
we are. This was crystal clear to me from the very start of
my leadership journey at ZP in 2015: the critical importance
of having deaf talent and deaf leadership alongside me, in
partnership with me, educating and guiding me,
contributing to ZP’s future path. Today, I am proud to say
that 43% of our executive team consists of deaf leaders who
know firsthand the experience of the community we serve.
Our founding spirit endures through our unwavering
commitment to those we serve and through the provision of
the most innovative products and services.
What are the primary objectives and philosophy of
ZP Better Together?
Our company’s primary objective is to support the deaf and
hard of hearing community’s journey toward a barrier-free
communication access world where opportunities and
communication access, regardless of whether you’re
hearing or deaf, are equal.
We are dedicated to meeting the unique needs of each deaf

areas of service: Video Relay Service
(VRS), Video Remote Interpreting
(VRI), Scheduled Virtual Interpreting
(SVI), Communication Access Real-Time
Translation (CART), and On-Site Interpreting.
The bedrock of our company’s philosophy is threefold:
Ÿ An unwavering commitment to the belief that every
conversation matters
Ÿ An unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion –
I am so proud that ZP has been named a “Best Place to
Work for Disability Inclusion” for three consecutive
years (2022, 2021, 2020)
Ÿ An unwavering commitment to ensure true “functional
equivalence” in telecommunications for the deaf
community – full and equal access to communications is
a fundamental human right, and it is past time we
delivered this promise of the Americans with
Disabilities Act from more than 30 years ago.
I am especially proud of ZP’s leadership and advocacy
work over the past several years on functional equivalence.
As part of the ( )
“Total Access” https://totalaccess.org
campaign, I, along with my employees and several
prominent leaders from the deaf community (Alexis Kashar,
Troy Kotsur, Storm Smith, and Warren “Wawa” Snipe),
have been fighting to close the unacceptable
communications gaps that still exist for the deaf community
today. Things like the lack of full access to E9-1-1
emergency services or the inability to have just one phone
number – the very things that the hearing community takes
for granted every day.
I will continue to lead this effort and will continue to speak
boldly and publicly about this as I have previously at major

conferences like SXSW, on Capitol Hill before congressio-
nal and policy leaders, and in national media, including

Commission (FCC) know of your support.
What are your top-notch offerings that have a strong
foothold in the industry?
ZP has several game-changing products and partnerships.
Ÿ Recently, we launched an innovative collaboration with
Meta (formerly Facebook), bringing our popular apps
and video relay services to Meta’s state-of-the-art Portal
family of products, delivering a powerful new
experience to people who use sign language.
Ÿ In 2017, ZP pioneered with the FCC a new “at home”
program where for the first-time, sign language
interpreters could work from their homes versus only in
designated centers. This became crucial to providing
uninterrupted services to the deaf community during the
COVID-19 global pandemic.
Ÿ We partnered with Apple to offer a comprehensive suite
of services to deaf and hard of hearing customers
allowing them to integrate various Apple products –
iPads, MacBooks, iPhones – with ZP’s full suite of VRS
services.
Ÿ In 2020, we launched sivo®, a free interactive app
enabling seamless three-way video communications
between deaf and hard of hearing individuals, sign
language interpreters, and hearing individuals; all
parties are “on video” – it was the first solution to offer
both real-time video interpreters and availability on all
mobile and desktop devices.
Ÿ We partnered with Cisco to integrate VRS services with
top industry teleconferencing solutions for both office
and home.
Ÿ Our ZP online CloudVP (videophone) solution further
democratized VRS access by making it available via
web browser without having to download an app,
essentially allowing deaf and hard of hearing
individuals to place a call anywhere using a browser.
Ÿ We partnered with LinkNYC to provide video relay
services, allowing the deaf and hard of hearing
community to stay connected through over 17,000
public kiosks throughout New York City.
What are the roadblocks that ZP Better Together faces
in the ever-changing landscape of the business world?
One of the major roadblocks we all continue to face is a
general lack of awareness and understanding hearing
individuals have about the deaf community and the
inequities they face when it comes to their everyday
communications. Most hearing people simply have no idea
of the reality. This includes continued biases and
misperceptions hearing people, including many top
business leaders, still have about deaf people and sign

language. When it comes to our world and our workplaces,
deaf people are still vastly underrepresented. Progress is
happening but we have a long way to go yet to ensure our
world and our workplaces are truly inclusive and
welcoming, that they truly value the talent and
contributions of deaf and hard of hearing people, and that
deaf and hard of hearing individuals are represented at all
levels of a company. We still need so much more education
of the hearing community.
This is a main reason why I am committed to two very
important intiatives: CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion
and Disability:IN’s CEOs Are In campaign. CEO Action is
the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance
diversity and inclusion in the workplace and Disability:IN
is one of the leading organizations in the world driving
disability inclusion and equality in business. Both
organizations are doing exemplary work and I am so proud
to be working with them and the many other CEOs that
have joined me as signatories.
Conversations about DEI are easy but actually making the
change we all talk about today, changing your
organization’s culture, standing up for that change no matter
what the obstacles are and seeing it through, is not easy.
This transformative change takes a true commitment, bold
leadership and a willingness as a leader to get very
uncomfortable.
I have been inspired by the work of these two organizations
and this collective CEO commitment to diversity and
inclusion. Today, while we all still have significant work to
do, I remain quite hopeful. As more CEOs and business
leaders join us and make the commitment to do the tough
work, we will overcome many of the roadblocks we still
face today both inside and outside the business world.
How is your company adapting to market orientation?
In many ways, our company, from day one, has been a best
practice model for market orientation. Since our inception,
ZP has put the deaf consumer front and center and has
always developed products prioritized by consumer needs.
We did this because, frankly, the mainstream market did not
and largely still does not. ZP has been doing this very
successfully for a long time.
What is your stance on implementing innovative
technologies?
We are all living in the golden age of technology, and yet
not all of us have full access to some of the most
fundamental communication services. So, underpinning all
that ZP does is our steadfast commitment to helping to
deliver true functional equivalence for the deaf community.
There is no acceptable reason today – not a single one - that

a deaf or hard of hearing person shouldn’t be able to easily
jump on Zoom for a job interview or have a single phone
number or be immediately located by emergency services.
No technology can be innovative if it’s inaccessible or “less
than” what others have. Solving this is what drives our
innovation and all of us here at ZP every day.
In what traditions is your company contributing to
the communities?
In addition to our core business of
continually bringing new innovative
and accessible communication
services to market, ZP also is
deeply committed to
supporting the deaf
communities on both
local and national
levels. Every
year we
support and
ZP is unwavering in
its commitment to
helping to deliver
true functional

deaf community.

sponsor numerous community events, which have included:
DeafNation Expos, DeafNation World Expo, Deafopia,
National Association of the Deaf Biennial Conference,
Disability:IN Conference, and The Next Big Idea, which is
an annual innovation competition for deaf high school and
college students at the National Technical Institute for the
Deaf.
We also have supported the Texas School for the Deaf, the
American School for the Deaf, New York School for the
Deaf (NYSD) and the National Technical Institute for the
Deaf Foundation (NTID); I serve on the board for both
NYSD and NTID Foundation.
For the past several years, I have teamed with several deaf
community leaders to speak publicly and to educate the
hearing world about the vital importance of functional
equivalence. We have presented on Capitol Hill; we have
spoken at top conferences like SXSW, and I continue to
discuss this with leading media outlets. We have been
working day and night to educate the public, the business
community, and congressional and policy leaders so that
they fully understand the realities of what the deaf
community faces today.
Still today, most hearing people have no idea what a deaf
person’s communication experience is really like or how
inequitable it truly is. To demonstrate this, we produced a
video, click ( )
https://bit.ly/whatIfDeaf
that very directly conveys these realities and essentially
puts a hearing person in a deaf person’s shoes.
What is the next chapter for ZP Better Together?
In many ways, ZP’s next chapter doesn’t begin until we
have successfully helped to rewrite an entirely new book
for the deaf community – when we help create a new, far
more inclusive world where the deaf community’s
fundamental right to communications access is no different
than anyone else’s – when deaf and hard of hearing
st
individuals have access to the same 21 century technologies
that we all do. When we do this, the possibilities for
positive change and impact in our world are, in many ways,
limitless. This is the new world, the “next,” that ZP strives
for every day. One of the critical pieces to achieving this is
the education of more hearing people. The need for greater
awareness and understanding is so critical. Only when more
hearing people have been educated and become informed
allies will our fight for greater communications access, for
basic human rights and for a new more inclusive world
become fully realized.
Provide a few customer/client testimonials that rightly
exhibit your company's expertise in the market.
"I have worked with ZP for about four years and have great
respect for Sherri and her bold leadership. With Sherri at
the helm, ZP continues to steadily bring state-of-the-art
technologies and services to market. But an accomplished
CEO only begins to describe Sherri’s bold leadership. I've
had the opportunity to work with many top executives
throughout my career, and without question, few, if any,
match Sherri's deep commitment to equity and inclusion.
Sherri's daily fight to deliver communications equity for the
deaf and hard of hearing is truly in a league of its own.”
- Kevin M. Fitzpatrick, EEO/AA Compliance Director at
PepsiCo
“ZP has been an instrumental part of the Kinderhook
family for many years. From the very beginning we
recognized the inequities the deaf community faced every
day. Our investment in the community was not only obvious
but very intentional. With the right management teams in
place and the right leadership we knew that we could help
solve the inequities. After acquiring ZVRS, Kinderhook then
acquired Purple, strategically bringing together two major
providers to expand services and innovation for the
community. Today, under Sherri’s leadership, I am proud to
say that I firmly believe that ZP is unmatched in its
community-first approach and its ongoing advocacy to
champion equity and inclusion for the deaf and hard of
hearing community.”
- Chris Michalik, Managing Director of Kinderhook
Industries.

the Distinct
Approaches in
Organizational
Leadership
Understanding

everal business organizations struggle to improve the
Ssituation in the organization. A change in the
leadership approach can be an effective alternative. A
new approach to transformational leadership has emerged
as a game-changing methodology that has brought about the
change internally across the departments changing the
complete work culture through enhancements in quality,
services, communication, employee efficiency, and increase
in customer satisfaction. Several business organizations
have effectively implemented transformational leadership
and have reached higher levels of success.
Quality Enhancement
The new leadership approach aims at implementing process
optimization systems that identify and record the present
work structure and highlight the areas of improvement by

bifurcating the activities and the time taken. Defining the
quality levels, the teams are directed in working with care,
focus and responsibility to reduce errors and operational
losses. It also guides people in minimizing the wastage of
raw materials, consumables, and product damages during
operational procedures. Employees are involved in product
development activities where they can contribute with
greater involvement and efficiency. The team members are
encouraged to participate in enhancing the product
attributes from the basic utility purpose to refining the
aesthetics, look and feel and packaging as well.
Better Service
Service plays a vital role in the modern business world.
Several businesses become complacent with the sales
figures brought in. However, the sales demand prompt and
enthusiastic customer service. This includes product
delivery, demonstration, installation, client orientation
about the product, and all the details. The service includes
attending to customer queries, doubts, and complaints (if
any) with an open and patient attitude. Good customer
service helps in understanding product performance,
ascertaining the functional aspects, and generating customer
goodwill. Prompt and timely service helps calm the
aggressive and demanding customers eventually making
them loyal well-wishers of the organization. The service
category has the potential of raking in approximately 17%
of repeat orders and 12% of orders from the references of
satisfied customers.
Inspiring Values
People join business organizations for working for their
livelihood and for learning some new aspects of the
industry. But what retains them is the captivating code of
ethics. Companies that have a strong foundation of values
create a sense of oneness with the employees. The
workforce feels organized, motivated and rightly
channelized. Working on their specific departmental KRAs,
the employees bond with the organization emotionally and
psychologically. The vision statement showcases where the
company is aiming at and so the employees too work with a
motivated mindset. Mission statement and the quality
policy instruct and guide the employees, associates, and the
industry on how the company is going forward with its
implementation of the plans.
Goal-based Mindset
Everyone works for their KRAs but the prominent
contributors are those who go beyond the basics to achieve
the extraordinary. Not just through a handful of ambitious
performers, transformational leadership puts forth a clear
goal-based work model for guiding the employees in
working in the right direction. The goal-based thinking
helps employees to prioritize their tasks and work
efficiently. This leads to better team bonding and team spirit
for working together and completing the scheduled targets
collectively. It makes everyone accountable and responsible
with a higher value for the time. The major reason why the
sales teams are very efficient departments is basically due to
their goal-based forward thinking.
Good Communication
Customers need to be communicated about the product and
services clearly. The next follow-ups regarding the
maintenance, service renewal, accessories and part
changeover, and feedback from the clients are very
necessary. Regular communication helps in several aspects
of conveying the requirements, getting to understand the
customer needs, Customer Relationship Management
(CRM) has emerged as an important function that has added
to approximately 27% of the business from the old and
existing customers. Steady engagement with the customers
aims to fulfill their requirements, address their queries, and
build trust in the organization. Consistent communication
has attributed to the success of the business over the
competitors offering similar brackets of products or
services. Even the vendors and associates value
communication and strive to enrich the association with
their valuable inputs, ideas, and contributions for new
market opportunities.
Increased Customer Satisfaction
The entire culture of the organization undergoes a
fundamental change of attitude toward looking at the work.
With the steady rise in product quality, service, and
efficiency, the customers get their expected returns within
the committed time frames. Their purpose getting fulfilled,
and customers feel valued and respected. This valuable
customer satisfaction proves very useful in creating a
league of loyal customer base. Satisfied customers offer
valuable references of other clients thereby contributing to
the growing business. The word of mouth publicity happens
through satisfied and happy customers who have been
associated with the organization for a long period of time.

Words of Recognition
Just wanted to send our thanks for all the assistance.
Cethlinn took the documents and her passport and went to
the French Embassy where she was granted a visa for her to
teach in France this coming year.
She is being hired by the government of France, so it is her
first full-time job. Your help and that of your company was
just what we needed. None of us had ever applied for a visa,
much less an Apostille, so we were relatively clueless. It
went absolutely smoothly at the embassy.

Comprehending
the Impact of
Technology on
Communication
Communication
Communication
key factor in the development of culture and
Ahuman society is communication. It involves the
sharing of thoughts, information, viewpoints, or
feelings between two or more people. With the help of
technology, communication has become much simpler.
Technological advancements have significantly improved
our quality of life and had an impact on every facet of it. It
also has an effect on communication techniques, and
communication has advanced greatly over time, from the
earliest forms to the most recent ones. We have immediate
access to a staggering variety of tools and services in
today's world, allowing us to connect with almost anyone,
anywhere, at any time.
The telephone (previously the telegraph), which allowed
people to communicate at a distance by voice and telephone
service, gave the term "telecommunication" a clear
definition before the internet and other data networks came
into existence.
In today's world, the two essentials are the internet and
mobile devices. When we discuss telecommunication, we
tend to concentrate on how we use mobile phones and the
internet in our daily lives, and almost all of us who require
modern communication have found this to be true.

Aligning the Facets
Although using technology can have both positive and
negative effects on our lives, how we use and apply it also
determines this. There are many positive effects, but one
that really demonstrates its benefit is the ability to
communicate with our families, friends, and other
important people when we are away from them.
As transmission media have expanded to include
microwave, terrestrial wireless, satellite, and broadband
fiber transport, remote communication has, of course, also
expanded to include data transport, video conferencing,
email, Web browsing, and various forms of distributed
collaboration.
Over the past 50 years, there have been significant changes
in telecommunications technologies. Since the advent of
information and communication technologies (ICT), which
numerous industries and organizations have widely
embraced in utilizing on a global scale, research into
telecommunications has begun.
In-depths of Comprehension
The biggest impact has been that all media types can now
be handled uniformly within a single infrastructure because
they can all be represented in the same fundamental way.
The functional description of the overall structure of the
telecommunications system and how the various
components of the system relate to one another has
undergone the most fundamental change, both in terms of
technology and its implications.
In order to address inefficient systems and processes in light
of technological advancements, communication for social
change entails communication for the sustainability and
development of society. People within the targeted society
are assisted in acquiring new knowledge and skills using a
variety of media and techniques, allowing communities and
societies to not only experience change but also to direct it.
In order to educate particular populations, different types of
media—old and new—can be used to promote health and
sustainable development. Information and communication
technologies (ICTs) have been shown to be a significant
contributor to economic growth and are able to reach visual,
auditory, and multi-sensory learners.
Creating Significant Impact
The economic health of the country as a whole has been
significantly impacted by information technology and
advanced telecommunications. The expansion of
educational access in even the most isolated areas is made
possible by telecom, which is also essential for improving
subject coverage and delivery.
Children, women, and men can all have access to
educational resources via the internet, computers, e-mail,
audio and video teleconferencing, broadcast television, and
radio. The content is directly accessible to students and
other learners. Teachers can increase their knowledge and
skills, particularly those required to support their students'
learning and locate the specific curriculum and content they
need.
The Bigger Picture
Radio and broadcast television have long been used to
increase the reach and delivery of education to those who
want to learn, particularly in rural areas. The two-way,
interactive, multimedia systems that bring voice, video, and
data in the form of text and graphics to learners on demand
can now be combined with this one-way technology. The
application and cost of the technologies available for use in
education are significantly different thanks to these
computer and network-based systems.
Telecommunication enables people to participate in and
develop in communities and nations, whether in rural or
urban areas, and this fact is widely acknowledged as to why
it is important for society.
It also involves the application of technology for societal
benefit to increase the percentage of users so that with a
large user population, awareness among the general public
will be improved.

The World’s Best Language Translation & Interpreting Solution Providers In 2023.pdf
Translators
without Borders
Ensuring Reliability and Seamless Communication
n today’s globalized society, language translation is a
Icrucial element. It makes it possible for people to
connect and exchange information with one another
throughout the globe. A translator is necessary for
communication in all settings, from the United Nations
General Assembly to simple travel; today, practically all
languages spoken worldwide have active assistance of
translators ready to provide translation services for a variety
of industries.
Translators without Borders (TWB) is a global network
of language volunteers who give their time to enable
individuals, regardless of their native tongue, to receive
critical information and be heard. The TWB Community
provides up to 30 million words of vital information in over
200 languages every year. We've worked with hundreds of
partner organizations, and only keep growing.
Today, TWB serves as the foundation of CLEAR Global, a
US-based NGO that offers technological and linguistic
support to affiliated nonprofits. Under the coherent
leadership of Aimee Ansari, CEO, the company actively
develops language skills and increases awareness of
language barriers in order to encourage linguistic inclusion
and more fair access to information.
In an interview with Insights Success, Aimee Ansari shared
valuable facts that showcase the significance of TWB along
with its journey and highlights the vision and mission of the
company.
Below are the excerpts from the interview:
What was the initial idea behind the inception of
Translators without Borders (TWB)?
TWB, today part of CLEAR Global, is a global community
of over 100,000 language volunteers. We were born out of
the need to support humanitarian responses globally by
providing language support to nonprofits helping people in
a crisis. Language barriers often impact humanitarian and
development efforts, and we wanted to overcome those
barriers.
Our founders ran a language services provider in Paris, just
down the street from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). In
the early 90s, MSF asked them to do some work; our
founders decided that they would do the work pro bono.
From this, a movement was founded. By 2010, TWB was
doing work for several nonprofits.
When the earthquake in Haiti happened, the demand for
their work grew exponentially. They realized that real
localization—ensuring that information was in the right
language - wasn’t something that aid workers understood
well. Translation into French wasn’t enough; Haitian Creole
was needed. From here, the organization developed to
support local, national, and international nonprofits to
communicate effectively with marginalized and vulnerable
people.
What is the primary objective and philosophy of
Translators without Borders?
We’re on a mission to help people get vital information and
be heard, whatever language they speak. Our work is

grounded in our community and our partnerships. Through
language support, communications research, and language
technology, we’re working alongside global and local
partners to build a more inclusive world.
Our philosophy is that no one should be left behind because
of the language they speak. That’s why we started the “Four
Billion Conversations” movement. We want to help bridge
the digital language divide, and bring more people into the
global conversations that matter to them.
What are your top-notch offerings that have a strong
foothold in the industry?
We offer:
Ÿ Language support, such as translation, revision,
subtitling, plain language editing, and voice-over in
over 200 languages, with help from our community of
more than 100,000 people;
Ÿ Language data and resources, including language maps
and glossaries, the Global Language Data Review,
language factsheets, information and communication
needs reports, advocacy briefs, and more; and
Ÿ Language technology, such as multilingual
conversational chatbots, information kiosks, information
depositories, and more.
Ÿ
What are the roadblocks that Translators without
Borders face in the ever-changing landscape of the
business world?
What I hear most often is "everyone speaks English" or
"60% of the population speaks the (colonial) language."
With our research, we dig a little deeper. The 60% that
speak the "colonial" language are probably men, and often
men who are already educated and in positions of power. If
aid agencies continue to work in these languages, then all
they are doing is reinforcing power dynamics and leaving
women, who are often less educated, behind.
We can ensure that everyone has access to information with
a small investment in language technology development.
And that’s what we do. Our biggest roadblock is finding
people to invest in it. With more funding, we could
maximize our impact in local communities worldwide. We
are always looking for sponsors and partners to help us.
How is your company adapting to market orientation?
We’re building advanced language technology solutions
The Coherent Leader
Aimee Ansari has over 20 years of experience in execu ve
roles in significant humanitarian and development
organiza ons. She is the CEO of CLEAR Global/TWB. She
has par cipated in numerous humanitarian crises,
including the South Sudan conflict, the Syrian refugee
crisis, the Balkans conflicts, the Hai earthquake, and the
Tajik civil war. Aimee worked for organiza ons such as
Care, Oxfam, Save the Children, and the United Na ons
before she joined Translators without Borders in 2016.
“Clearly, informa on in the right language at the right me
in the right format is crucial. Illiteracy means that even if
you have access to the internet and the wealth of
knowledge available online, you can’t use it. If it’s not in
your language, then it’s even less useful. Unless you have
good machine transla on.”
March 2023 | 32 | www.insightssuccess.com
based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. This
enables us to better respond to the evolving language needs
of marginalized communities globally. New technologies
are having a huge impact on society, and we’re using them
for social good.
We’re also constantly improving our language service
delivery so that we can leverage our offerings and
collaborate with various entities—all in the name of
assisting and reaching out to more people with critical
information. We’re adapting wherever we can help in
response to changing landscapes. Our nonprofit stands out
because we take solutions mostly used for commercial
purposes and apply them to make a greater impact in the
nonprofit sector.
What is your stance on implementing innovative
technologies?
We offer smart, innovative language technology solutions
using artificial intelligence and natural language processing
to enable two-way communication. We’re using chatbots to
drive change. We’re working on an information kiosk and
deploying a multilingual depository, aiming to help people
affected by the war in Ukraine. We’re also building various
apps to support migrants and provide educational resources.
There’s great power in innovative language technology
solutions that we want to harness.
In what traditions is your company contributing to the
communities?
We have offices in Nigeria and Bangladesh, with ongoing
programs in northeast Nigeria and Cox’s Bazar. By working
with a network of partner organizations, we’re reaching
local communities across the world.
Our language support and other solutions help local
communities get vital information on a range of topics,
from protection against sexual exploitation and abuse to
sustainable agriculture, forced displacement, women’s
health, and COVID-19. We help people get answers to their
questions in their own language.
We help people be heard. When they can speak in their own
language and have someone understand their needs, they
feel valued, and they have more trust in the system (which
is humanitarian in most of our cases) and more confidence
to speak about their needs and wants and about their
concerns and struggles. Eventually, they will feel more
empowered to take action and work toward a better future,
for themselves and their families.
What is the next chapter for Translators without
Borders?
When we transitioned to CLEAR Global, we started a
movement aiming to bridge the digital language divide.
“Four billion conversations” is about going the extra step
toward diversity and inclusion when it comes to language
and communication, both online and offline.
We want to open up the power of the internet to people who
speak marginalized languages so they can take part in
online conversations around issues and topics that concern
them as well.
Whether it be about climate change, public health, women’s
health, or forced displacement and migration, we want to
help people voice their needs and have their issues
addressed so they can also benefit from the digital
information, tools, and resources that are all available to
people who speak more frequently spoken languages.
We’re looking for supporters and partners who can help.
We’re currently running a fundraising campaign, “Meet me
in my language”. We want to raise $100,000 to kick-start
our 2023 projects. Throughout the campaign, we’ll be
featuring stories to demonstrate how language is a key
factor in building a better world. So, keep an eye on our
social media:
Ÿ Facebook
Ÿ Instagram
Ÿ Twi er
Ÿ LinkedIn (TWB and CLEAR Global )

  • 12. ehind every venture is a mission that ignites its Bpurpose and ties the business and its customers. A mission that resonates with the public is a promi- nent factor leading to business growth and serves as a foundation that distinguishes the enterprise from others. Striving every day to make this world a better, more inclusive and accessible place for the deaf and hard of hearing communities with its services and technology, ZP Better Together dedicates itself to the mission that every conversation matters, and that communication access is a universal human right. A leading provider of communica- tions solutions, including video relay and interpretation services for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, ZP Better Together is deeply committed to ensuring that the deaf st community has the same access to 21 century telecommu- nications that the hearing community takes for granted each and every day. Sherri Turpin, CEO of ZVRS & Purple Communica- tions, divisions of ZP Better Together (ZP), is a bold social impact leader who led ZP to be recognized as a Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion for three consecutive years (2020, 2021, 2022) and was named a Best CEO honoree by the Austin Business Journal. Sherri shared more about her purpose-driven leadership, her commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and the mission that is central to ZP’s services in an interview with Insights Success. Below are the highlights of the interview: What was the initial idea behind the inception of ZP Better Together? Today our organization, ZP Better Together LLC, is one of the leading providers of the most innovative communications services for the deaf and hard of hearing community. ZVRS and Purple Communications are divisions of ZP Better Together. In 2017, under my leadership, ZVRS acquired Purple Communications. We wanted to bring together two major providers of Video Relay Services (VRS) and, importantly, create a viable #2 in our industry to ensure increased competition, true provider choice, and expansion of services and product innovation for the deaf community. Our company’s roots, though, began in 2000 with the national launch of a company by the name of CSDVRS. At its core, CSDVRS was developed “by and for” deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Dedicated to the principle that every conversation matters and that communication access is a universal human right, it put the community first and was the very first organization to commercially develop and perfect video relay applications for deaf and hard of hearing consumers, essentially creating the now-established video relay services industry that we know today. Today, we are known as ZP Better Together, but our “by and for” the deaf community roots remain central to who we are. This was crystal clear to me from the very start of my leadership journey at ZP in 2015: the critical importance of having deaf talent and deaf leadership alongside me, in partnership with me, educating and guiding me, contributing to ZP’s future path. Today, I am proud to say that 43% of our executive team consists of deaf leaders who know firsthand the experience of the community we serve. Our founding spirit endures through our unwavering commitment to those we serve and through the provision of the most innovative products and services. What are the primary objectives and philosophy of ZP Better Together? Our company’s primary objective is to support the deaf and hard of hearing community’s journey toward a barrier-free communication access world where opportunities and communication access, regardless of whether you’re hearing or deaf, are equal. We are dedicated to meeting the unique needs of each deaf ZP has always put the deaf consumer front and center and has always developed products prioritized by consumer needs. In addition to our deep portfolio of innovative products and services, we have a phenomenal team of more than 4,100 professional sign language interpreters, all of whom are qualified or certified and follow the highest standards of service, going above and beyond federal requirements. Our commitment extends across hardware, software, and in-person solutions within five areas of service: Video Relay Service (VRS), Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), Scheduled Virtual Interpreting (SVI), Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART), and On-Site Interpreting. The bedrock of our company’s philosophy is threefold: Ÿ An unwavering commitment to the belief that every conversation matters Ÿ An unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion – I am so proud that ZP has been named a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion” for three consecutive years (2022, 2021, 2020) Ÿ An unwavering commitment to ensure true “functional equivalence” in telecommunications for the deaf community – full and equal access to communications is a fundamental human right, and it is past time we delivered this promise of the Americans with Disabilities Act from more than 30 years ago. I am especially proud of ZP’s leadership and advocacy work over the past several years on functional equivalence. As part of the ( ) “Total Access” https://totalaccess.org campaign, I, along with my employees and several prominent leaders from the deaf community (Alexis Kashar, Troy Kotsur, Storm Smith, and Warren “Wawa” Snipe), have been fighting to close the unacceptable communications gaps that still exist for the deaf community today. Things like the lack of full access to E9-1-1 emergency services or the inability to have just one phone number – the very things that the hearing community takes for granted every day. I will continue to lead this effort and will continue to speak boldly and publicly about this as I have previously at major Photo Credit: Tate Tullier Photo Credit: Tate Tullier

For those who would like to join me and ZP, please visit “Total Access” ( ) and let the Federal Communications https://totalaccess.org Commission (FCC) know of your support. What are your top-notch offerings that have a strong foothold in the industry? ZP has several game-changing products and partnerships. Ÿ Recently, we launched an innovative collaboration with Meta (formerly Facebook), bringing our popular apps and video relay services to Meta’s state-of-the-art Portal family of products, delivering a powerful new experience to people who use sign language. Ÿ In 2017, ZP pioneered with the FCC a new “at home” program where for the first-time, sign language interpreters could work from their homes versus only in designated centers. This became crucial to providing uninterrupted services to the deaf community during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Ÿ We partnered with Apple to offer a comprehensive suite of services to deaf and hard of hearing customers allowing them to integrate various Apple products – iPads, MacBooks, iPhones – with ZP’s full suite of VRS services. Ÿ In 2020, we launched sivo®, a free interactive app enabling seamless three-way video communications between deaf and hard of hearing individuals, sign language interpreters, and hearing individuals; all parties are “on video” – it was the first solution to offer both real-time video interpreters and availability on all mobile and desktop devices. Ÿ We partnered with Cisco to integrate VRS services with top industry teleconferencing solutions for both office and home. Ÿ Our ZP online CloudVP (videophone) solution further democratized VRS access by making it available via web browser without having to download an app, essentially allowing deaf and hard of hearing individuals to place a call anywhere using a browser. Ÿ We partnered with LinkNYC to provide video relay services, allowing the deaf and hard of hearing community to stay connected through over 17,000 public kiosks throughout New York City. What are the roadblocks that ZP Better Together faces in the ever-changing landscape of the business world? One of the major roadblocks we all continue to face is a general lack of awareness and understanding hearing individuals have about the deaf community and the inequities they face when it comes to their everyday communications. Most hearing people simply have no idea of the reality. This includes continued biases and misperceptions hearing people, including many top business leaders, still have about deaf people and sign Artist Credit: Frank Gallimore Artist Credit: Frank Gallimore
  • 15. language. When it comes to our world and our workplaces, deaf people are still vastly underrepresented. Progress is happening but we have a long way to go yet to ensure our world and our workplaces are truly inclusive and welcoming, that they truly value the talent and contributions of deaf and hard of hearing people, and that deaf and hard of hearing individuals are represented at all levels of a company. We still need so much more education of the hearing community. This is a main reason why I am committed to two very important intiatives: CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion and Disability:IN’s CEOs Are In campaign. CEO Action is the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace and Disability:IN is one of the leading organizations in the world driving disability inclusion and equality in business. Both organizations are doing exemplary work and I am so proud to be working with them and the many other CEOs that have joined me as signatories. Conversations about DEI are easy but actually making the change we all talk about today, changing your organization’s culture, standing up for that change no matter what the obstacles are and seeing it through, is not easy. This transformative change takes a true commitment, bold leadership and a willingness as a leader to get very uncomfortable. I have been inspired by the work of these two organizations and this collective CEO commitment to diversity and inclusion. Today, while we all still have significant work to do, I remain quite hopeful. As more CEOs and business leaders join us and make the commitment to do the tough work, we will overcome many of the roadblocks we still face today both inside and outside the business world. How is your company adapting to market orientation? In many ways, our company, from day one, has been a best practice model for market orientation. Since our inception, ZP has put the deaf consumer front and center and has always developed products prioritized by consumer needs. We did this because, frankly, the mainstream market did not and largely still does not. ZP has been doing this very successfully for a long time. What is your stance on implementing innovative technologies? We are all living in the golden age of technology, and yet not all of us have full access to some of the most fundamental communication services. So, underpinning all that ZP does is our steadfast commitment to helping to deliver true functional equivalence for the deaf community. • 16. a deaf or hard of hearing person shouldn’t be able to easily jump on Zoom for a job interview or have a single phone number or be immediately located by emergency services. No technology can be innovative if it’s inaccessible or “less than” what others have. Solving this is what drives our innovation and all of us here at ZP every day. In what traditions is your company contributing to the communities? In addition to our core business of continually bringing new innovative and accessible communication services to market, ZP also is deeply committed to supporting the deaf communities on both local and national levels. Every year we support and ZP is unwavering in its commitment to helping to deliver true functional equivalence for the deaf community. Photo Credit: Tate Tullier
  • 17. sponsor numerous community events, which have included: DeafNation Expos, DeafNation World Expo, Deafopia, National Association of the Deaf Biennial Conference, Disability:IN Conference, and The Next Big Idea, which is an annual innovation competition for deaf high school and college students at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. We also have supported the Texas School for the Deaf, the American School for the Deaf, New York School for the Deaf (NYSD) and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf Foundation (NTID); I serve on the board for both NYSD and NTID Foundation. For the past several years, I have teamed with several deaf community leaders to speak publicly and to educate the hearing world about the vital importance of functional equivalence. We have presented on Capitol Hill; we have spoken at top conferences like SXSW, and I continue to discuss this with leading media outlets. We have been working day and night to educate the public, the business community, and congressional and policy leaders so that they fully understand the realities of what the deaf community faces today. Still today, most hearing people have no idea what a deaf person’s communication experience is really like or how inequitable it truly is. To demonstrate this, we produced a video, click ( ) https://bit.ly/whatIfDeaf that very directly conveys these realities and essentially puts a hearing person in a deaf person’s shoes. What is the next chapter for ZP Better Together? In many ways, ZP’s next chapter doesn’t begin until we have successfully helped to rewrite an entirely new book for the deaf community – when we help create a new, far more inclusive world where the deaf community’s fundamental right to communications access is no different than anyone else’s – when deaf and hard of hearing st individuals have access to the same 21 century technologies that we all do. When we do this, the possibilities for positive change and impact in our world are, in many ways, limitless. This is the new world, the “next,” that ZP strives for every day. One of the critical pieces to achieving this is the education of more hearing people. The need for greater awareness and understanding is so critical. Only when more hearing people have been educated and become informed allies will our fight for greater communications access, for basic human rights and for a new more inclusive world become fully realized. Provide a few customer/client testimonials that rightly exhibit your company's expertise in the market. "I have worked with ZP for about four years and have great respect for Sherri and her bold leadership. With Sherri at the helm, ZP continues to steadily bring state-of-the-art technologies and services to market. But an accomplished CEO only begins to describe Sherri’s bold leadership. I've had the opportunity to work with many top executives throughout my career, and without question, few, if any, match Sherri's deep commitment to equity and inclusion. Sherri's daily fight to deliver communications equity for the deaf and hard of hearing is truly in a league of its own.” - Kevin M. Fitzpatrick, EEO/AA Compliance Director at PepsiCo “ZP has been an instrumental part of the Kinderhook family for many years. From the very beginning we recognized the inequities the deaf community faced every day. Our investment in the community was not only obvious but very intentional. With the right management teams in place and the right leadership we knew that we could help solve the inequities. After acquiring ZVRS, Kinderhook then acquired Purple, strategically bringing together two major providers to expand services and innovation for the community. Today, under Sherri’s leadership, I am proud to say that I firmly believe that ZP is unmatched in its community-first approach and its ongoing advocacy to champion equity and inclusion for the deaf and hard of hearing community.” - Chris Michalik, Managing Director of Kinderhook Industries.
  • 21. Prospects of Betterments everal business organizations struggle to improve the Ssituation in the organization. A change in the leadership approach can be an effective alternative. A new approach to transformational leadership has emerged as a game-changing methodology that has brought about the change internally across the departments changing the complete work culture through enhancements in quality, services, communication, employee efficiency, and increase in customer satisfaction. Several business organizations have effectively implemented transformational leadership and have reached higher levels of success. Quality Enhancement The new leadership approach aims at implementing process optimization systems that identify and record the present work structure and highlight the areas of improvement by March 2023 | 19 | www.insightssuccess.com

It also guides people in minimizing the wastage of raw materials, consumables, and product damages during operational procedures. Employees are involved in product development activities where they can contribute with greater involvement and efficiency. The team members are encouraged to participate in enhancing the product attributes from the basic utility purpose to refining the aesthetics, look and feel and packaging as well. Better Service Service plays a vital role in the modern business world. Several businesses become complacent with the sales figures brought in. However, the sales demand prompt and enthusiastic customer service. This includes product delivery, demonstration, installation, client orientation about the product, and all the details. The service includes attending to customer queries, doubts, and complaints (if any) with an open and patient attitude. Good customer service helps in understanding product performance, ascertaining the functional aspects, and generating customer goodwill. Prompt and timely service helps calm the aggressive and demanding customers eventually making them loyal well-wishers of the organization. The service category has the potential of raking in approximately 17% of repeat orders and 12% of orders from the references of satisfied customers. Inspiring Values People join business organizations for working for their livelihood and for learning some new aspects of the industry. But what retains them is the captivating code of ethics. Companies that have a strong foundation of values create a sense of oneness with the employees. The workforce feels organized, motivated and rightly channelized. Working on their specific departmental KRAs, the employees bond with the organization emotionally and psychologically. The vision statement showcases where the company is aiming at and so the employees too work with a motivated mindset. Mission statement and the quality policy instruct and guide the employees, associates, and the industry on how the company is going forward with its implementation of the plans. Goal-based Mindset Everyone works for their KRAs but the prominent contributors are those who go beyond the basics to achieve the extraordinary. Not just through a handful of ambitious performers, transformational leadership puts forth a clear goal-based work model for guiding the employees in working in the right direction. The goal-based thinking helps employees to prioritize their tasks and work efficiently. This leads to better team bonding and team spirit for working together and completing the scheduled targets collectively. It makes everyone accountable and responsible with a higher value for the time. The major reason why the sales teams are very efficient departments is basically due to their goal-based forward thinking. Good Communication Customers need to be communicated about the product and services clearly. The next follow-ups regarding the maintenance, service renewal, accessories and part changeover, and feedback from the clients are very necessary. Regular communication helps in several aspects of conveying the requirements, getting to understand the customer needs, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) has emerged as an important function that has added to approximately 27% of the business from the old and existing customers. Steady engagement with the customers aims to fulfill their requirements, address their queries, and build trust in the organization. Consistent communication has attributed to the success of the business over the competitors offering similar brackets of products or services. Even the vendors and associates value communication and strive to enrich the association with their valuable inputs, ideas, and contributions for new market opportunities. She is being hired by the government of France, so it is her first full-time job. Your help and that of your company was just what we needed. None of us had ever applied for a visa, much less an Apostille, so we were relatively clueless. It went absolutely smoothly at the embassy. -Regards, Phil This email confirms safe delivery of the facilitator guide and a report that I'm doing a happy dance in my living room seeing this all come together beautifully and ahead of your initial timeline. • 28. Comprehending the Impact of Technology on Communication Communication Communication key factor in the development of culture and Ahuman society is communication. It involves the sharing of thoughts, information, viewpoints, or feelings between two or more people. With the help of technology, communication has become much simpler. Technological advancements have significantly improved our quality of life and had an impact on every facet of it. It also has an effect on communication techniques, and communication has advanced greatly over time, from the earliest forms to the most recent ones. We have immediate access to a staggering variety of tools and services in today's world, allowing us to connect with almost anyone, anywhere, at any time. The telephone (previously the telegraph), which allowed people to communicate at a distance by voice and telephone service, gave the term "telecommunication" a clear definition before the internet and other data networks came into existence. In today's world, the two essentials are the internet and mobile devices. When we discuss telecommunication, we tend to concentrate on how we use mobile phones and the internet in our daily lives, and almost all of us who require modern communication have found this to be true. • 30. Aligning the Facets Although using technology can have both positive and negative effects on our lives, how we use and apply it also determines this. There are many positive effects, but one that really demonstrates its benefit is the ability to communicate with our families, friends, and other important people when we are away from them. As transmission media have expanded to include microwave, terrestrial wireless, satellite, and broadband fiber transport, remote communication has, of course, also expanded to include data transport, video conferencing, email, Web browsing, and various forms of distributed collaboration. Over the past 50 years, there have been significant changes in telecommunications technologies. Since the advent of information and communication technologies (ICT), which numerous industries and organizations have widely embraced in utilizing on a global scale, research into telecommunications has begun. In-depths of Comprehension The biggest impact has been that all media types can now be handled uniformly within a single infrastructure because they can all be represented in the same fundamental way. The functional description of the overall structure of the telecommunications system and how the various components of the system relate to one another has undergone the most fundamental change, both in terms of technology and its implications. In order to address inefficient systems and processes in light of technological advancements, communication for social change entails communication for the sustainability and development of society. People within the targeted society are assisted in acquiring new knowledge and skills using a variety of media and techniques, allowing communities and societies to not only experience change but also to direct it. In order to educate particular populations, different types of media—old and new—can be used to promote health and sustainable development. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been shown to be a significant contributor to economic growth and are able to reach visual, auditory, and multi-sensory learners. Creating Significant Impact The economic health of the country as a whole has been significantly impacted by information technology and advanced telecommunications. The expansion of educational access in even the most isolated areas is made possible by telecom, which is also essential for improving subject coverage and delivery. Children, women, and men can all have access to educational resources via the internet, computers, e-mail, audio and video teleconferencing, broadcast television, and radio. The content is directly accessible to students and other learners. Teachers can increase their knowledge and skills, particularly those required to support their students' learning and locate the specific curriculum and content they need. The Bigger Picture Radio and broadcast television have long been used to increase the reach and delivery of education to those who want to learn, particularly in rural areas. The two-way, interactive, multimedia systems that bring voice, video, and data in the form of text and graphics to learners on demand can now be combined with this one-way technology. The application and cost of the technologies available for use in education are significantly different thanks to these computer and network-based systems. Telecommunication enables people to participate in and develop in communities and nations, whether in rural or urban areas, and this fact is widely acknowledged as to why it is important for society. It also involves the application of technology for societal benefit to increase the percentage of users so that with a large user population, awareness among the general public will be improved. • 32. Translators without Borders Ensuring Reliability and Seamless Communication n today’s globalized society, language translation is a Icrucial element. It makes it possible for people to connect and exchange information with one another throughout the globe. A translator is necessary for communication in all settings, from the United Nations General Assembly to simple travel; today, practically all languages spoken worldwide have active assistance of translators ready to provide translation services for a variety of industries. Translators without Borders (TWB) is a global network of language volunteers who give their time to enable individuals, regardless of their native tongue, to receive critical information and be heard. The TWB Community provides up to 30 million words of vital information in over 200 languages every year. We've worked with hundreds of partner organizations, and only keep growing. Today, TWB serves as the foundation of CLEAR Global, a US-based NGO that offers technological and linguistic support to affiliated nonprofits. Under the coherent leadership of Aimee Ansari, CEO, the company actively develops language skills and increases awareness of language barriers in order to encourage linguistic inclusion and more fair access to information. In an interview with Insights Success, Aimee Ansari shared valuable facts that showcase the significance of TWB along with its journey and highlights the vision and mission of the company. Below are the excerpts from the interview: What was the initial idea behind the inception of Translators without Borders (TWB)? TWB, today part of CLEAR Global, is a global community of over 100,000 language volunteers. We were born out of the need to support humanitarian responses globally by providing language support to nonprofits helping people in a crisis. Language barriers often impact humanitarian and development efforts, and we wanted to overcome those barriers. Our founders ran a language services provider in Paris, just down the street from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). In the early 90s, MSF asked them to do some work; our founders decided that they would do the work pro bono. From this, a movement was founded. By 2010, TWB was doing work for several nonprofits. When the earthquake in Haiti happened, the demand for their work grew exponentially. They realized that real localization—ensuring that information was in the right language - wasn’t something that aid workers understood well. Translation into French wasn’t enough; Haitian Creole was needed. From here, the organization developed to support local, national, and international nonprofits to communicate effectively with marginalized and vulnerable people. What is the primary objective and philosophy of Translators without Borders? We’re on a mission to help people get vital information and be heard, whatever language they speak. • 34. grounded in our community and our partnerships. Through language support, communications research, and language technology, we’re working alongside global and local partners to build a more inclusive world. Our philosophy is that no one should be left behind because of the language they speak. That’s why we started the “Four Billion Conversations” movement. We want to help bridge the digital language divide, and bring more people into the global conversations that matter to them. What are your top-notch offerings that have a strong foothold in the industry? We offer: Ÿ Language support, such as translation, revision, subtitling, plain language editing, and voice-over in over 200 languages, with help from our community of more than 100,000 people; Ÿ Language data and resources, including language maps and glossaries, the Global Language Data Review, language factsheets, information and communication needs reports, advocacy briefs, and more; and Ÿ Language technology, such as multilingual conversational chatbots, information kiosks, information depositories, and more. Ÿ What are the roadblocks that Translators without Borders face in the ever-changing landscape of the business world? What I hear most often is "everyone speaks English" or "60% of the population speaks the (colonial) language." With our research, we dig a little deeper. The 60% that speak the "colonial" language are probably men, and often men who are already educated and in positions of power. If aid agencies continue to work in these languages, then all they are doing is reinforcing power dynamics and leaving women, who are often less educated, behind. We can ensure that everyone has access to information with a small investment in language technology development. And that’s what we do. Our biggest roadblock is finding people to invest in it. With more funding, we could maximize our impact in local communities worldwide. We are always looking for sponsors and partners to help us. How is your company adapting to market orientation? We’re building advanced language technology solutions The Coherent Leader Aimee Ansari has over 20 years of experience in execu ve roles in significant humanitarian and development organiza ons. She is the CEO of CLEAR Global/TWB. She has par cipated in numerous humanitarian crises, including the South Sudan conflict, the Syrian refugee crisis, the Balkans conflicts, the Hai earthquake, and the Tajik civil war. Aimee worked for organiza ons such as Care, Oxfam, Save the Children, and the United Na ons before she joined Translators without Borders in 2016. “Clearly, informa on in the right language at the right me in the right format is crucial. Illiteracy means that even if you have access to the internet and the wealth of knowledge available online, you can’t use it. If it’s not in your language, then it’s even less useful. Unless you have good machine transla on.” March 2023 | 32 | www.insightssuccess.com
  • 35. based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. This enables us to better respond to the evolving language needs of marginalized communities globally. New technologies are having a huge impact on society, and we’re using them for social good. We’re also constantly improving our language service delivery so that we can leverage our offerings and collaborate with various entities—all in the name of assisting and reaching out to more people with critical information. We’re adapting wherever we can help in response to changing landscapes. Our nonprofit stands out because we take solutions mostly used for commercial purposes and apply them to make a greater impact in the nonprofit sector. What is your stance on implementing innovative technologies? We offer smart, innovative language technology solutions using artificial intelligence and natural language processing to enable two-way communication. We’re using chatbots to drive change. We’re working on an information kiosk and deploying a multilingual depository, aiming to help people affected by the war in Ukraine. We’re also building various apps to support migrants and provide educational resources. There’s great power in innovative language technology solutions that we want to harness. In what traditions is your company contributing to the communities? We have offices in Nigeria and Bangladesh, with ongoing programs in northeast Nigeria and Cox’s Bazar. By working with a network of partner organizations, we’re reaching local communities across the world. Our language support and other solutions help local communities get vital information on a range of topics, from protection against sexual exploitation and abuse to sustainable agriculture, forced displacement, women’s health, and COVID-19. We help people get answers to their questions in their own language. We help people be heard. When they can speak in their own language and have someone understand their needs, they feel valued, and they have more trust in the system (which is humanitarian in most of our cases) and more confidence to speak about their needs and wants and about their concerns and struggles. Eventually, they will feel more empowered to take action and work toward a better future, for themselves and their families. What is the next chapter for Translators without Borders? When we transitioned to CLEAR Global, we started a movement aiming to bridge the digital language divide. “Four billion conversations” is about going the extra step toward diversity and inclusion when it comes to language and communication, both online and offline. We want to open up the power of the internet to people who speak marginalized languages so they can take part in online conversations around issues and topics that concern them as well. Whether it be about climate change, public health, women’s health, or forced displacement and migration, we want to help people voice their needs and have their issues addressed so they can also benefit from the digital information, tools, and resources that are all available to people who speak more frequently spoken languages. We’re looking for supporters and partners who can help. We’re currently running a fundraising campaign, “Meet me in my language”. We want to raise $100,000 to kick-start our 2023 projects. Throughout the campaign, we’ll be featuring stories to demonstrate how language is a key factor in building a better world.
