Editor's Notes
Both our production plants are located on the outskirts of villages. It goes without saying that they did their best, right from the beginning, to avoid causing nuisance to local residents. Like any good neighbour, they wanted to make sure that people who were relaxing by the swimming pool in their garden were not chased away by vibrations transmitted through the ground from clattering production machines, or by unpleasant odours or noise. A measure of our success is provided by the fact that whenever we have to renew our environmental management permits nowadays, we hardly ever hear complaints from local residents. Our environmental awareness developed step by step, via attention to processes followed by focus on products. In 1994, the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (Dutch abbreviation VROM) invited Ahrend Zwanenburg to take part in ECO-design pilot projects; the outcome was a 60% reduction in the environmental loading caused by the Ahrend 220 series of chairs. Ahrend worked together with a number of other pioneers in this field to develop ‘ECO-indicators’, to facilitate the calculation of the environmental loading caused by certain products. Since then, the calculations have been extended to cover all Ahrend products. Ahrend Sint Oedenrode was one of the first Dutch production plants to gain ISO 14001 certification (for its environmental care system).
Thanks to the pioneering environmental management achievements of Ahrend St.Oedenrode, the plant was nominated for the European Environment Prize in Brussels by the Dutch Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment at the time, Mrs. Margaretha de Boer. No other plant in this branch of Dutch industry has equalled this feat, before or since! Ahrend Sint Oedenrode is the only plant from our branch of Dutch industry to participate in the MJA medium-term Energy-efficiency Agreement – we are already in our third round of this agreement. Zwanenburg has received its ISO 14001 certification for environmental management. In 1998, our plant was the 22 nd enterprise from the whole of Dutch industry to receive EMAS validation for its environmental annual report. In 1994, we were invited by the Stichting Natuur en Milieu (Dutch Nature and Environment Foundation) to participate in ‘Economie Light’ projects (aimed at enhancing sustainability awareness in the Netherlands) Starting in 2007, our concern for sustainability has led us to intensify the focus on an integral approach to CSR On 23 June 2008, the Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (Jacqueline Cramer) took the symbolic first step at our Sint Oedenrode plant in the campaign to close the recycling loops by 2020 and to achieve CO 2 -neutral production In December 2008, Ahrend was the only Dutch company to win the prestigious EMAS award
Ahrend has been structurally active in the field of environmental care since the 1980s. Since all international objectives take 1990 as their reference year, we also give our results with respect to that year. And don’t forget that in the period under consideration, our production volume has more than doubled... That makes Ahrend’s achievements even more impressive! Processes Elimination of hazardous substances: Use of solvent-free powder coating to paint our products (less VOS emission) Switch from zinc phosphating to iron phosphating (less heavy metal loading) Use of solvent-free UV-curing resins for veneer finishes (reduction in solvent consumption) Switch from demi installation to reverse osmosis in pretreatment for paint line (elimination of hydrochloric acid and caustic soda)
When we start occupying ourselves with the “whole cycle”, our suppliers will not be able to avoid delivering goods in accordance with our criteria or acting according to our criteria. We started discussions last year with several of our suppliers in which Ahrend’s social and ecological objectives were the starting point. The other suppliers will follow this process in the course of this year. Naturally this can be successful only if we rely on international agreements and codes of conduct. And because not every supplier can change everything at once just like that, we make “improvement plans” with them. If CSR is important to us, we should communicate this and help to disseminate it. Our (new type of) contacts with our suppliers are an example of this.
The following slides start by considering “our world”, When we talk about “what we do”, we are referring to our concrete activities. with special reference to four core activities
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a building certification scheme from the USA. You can score points for the furnishing of your office building, on the basis of which it can be certified as ‘green’, ‘greener’ or ‘greenest’. We have set up LEED score forms for all our products, allowing our customers to achieve a marked increase in the LEED score for their building. EMAS stands for Eco Management and Audit Scheme. Companies from the industrial sector can sign up for this scheme on a voluntary basis. The objective is to promote continual improvement of the company’s environmental performance through the introduction of an environmental management system, internal audits and the publication of an environmental annual report. Our plant is registered by the Stichting Coördinatie Certificatie Milieuzorgsystemen (Foundation for Coordination of the Certification of Environmental care Systems; Dutch abbreviation SCCM) as a participant in the EMAS scheme under registration number NL-00022 , and our latest environmental report (validated by the current environmental auditor) has been deposited with the SCCM
We have been using ECO-design principles more and more since the first Eco-design project in 1994, and now apply them increasingly in all other product developments. Desired improvements can be plotted on each of the radial axes leading to the 8 points shown round the circle top right in this slide. The length of each radius corresponds to the extent of the intended improvement. If we join up these 8 points, we get a figure resembling a spider’s web. The bigger the web, the greener the design. For example, the blue figure represents an existing product; the green one represents a product that scores higher on most points. This simple design aid can be used to assess product quality during the product development process, and to highlight aspects needing closer attention.

We have been using our new Ecobase calculation system since the end of 2007 It gives a much more complete (and accurate) picture of the environmental loading And not just in “Eco points”, but in terms of the following aspects of all Ahrend products: Abiotic depletion (exhaustion of natural resources) Greenhouse gases (of which CO 2 is the most important) Contribution to depletion of the ozone layer Toxicity for humans Aquatic Eco-toxicity (poisonous effect on water) Terrestrial Eco-toxicity (poisonous effect on soil) Smog formation Contribution to acidification Contribution to eutrophication (increase in nutrient content of an ecosystem) This allows us to give a very accurate indication of the environmental effect of all the products we make ourselves. EcoBase is a vital aid in our product development process, since it allows our engineers and designers to keep a constant check on the environmental effect of our products during the development process. But it also helps us to provide our customers with detailed answers to their environmental queries, which they are asking more and more nowadays (understandably, and quite justifiably).
