CHALLENGE THE PROCESS By: Immie Miles
SEARCH FOR OPPORTUNITIEs! “I realized that my job as a leader was to make change each and every day.” –Robin Selden, Logitech Leaders in the studies in this chapter talked about times when they turned around losing operations, started up new plants, developed new products or services, installed untested procedures, renewed operations threatened with closing, or released the creative spirit trapped inside stifling bureaucratic systems. The personal-best leadership cases are about radical departures from the past, about doing things that have never been done before, and about going to places not yet discovered. All change requires that leaders actively seek ways to make things better, to grow, innovate, and improve.
Can you think of a time in history that someone challenged the process and made a difference? Lets hear about it!
SEIZE THE INITIATIVE! Take challenges. Leaders are people who seize the initiative with enthusiasm, determination, and a desire to make something happen. Leadership is the study of people who triumph against overwhelming odds, who take initiative when there is inertia, who confront the established order, who mobilize people and institutions in the face of strong resistance.
Change requires leadership Challenge the status quo!
Leaders Make Something Happen! They don’t like the status quo They want to make something happen They want to change the business-as-usual PROACTIVITY- Proactive people tend to work harder at what they do. They persist in achieving their goals, while others tend to give up, especially when faced with strong objections or great adversity. Jessica Ward Its called determination and I've got it!!! Lets try it out! You are all just out of college and looking for jobs. You have applied for jobs online and emailed your resume to craigslist ads. You still can’t find a job. Think of a proactive and innovative way to put yourself out there and get the job of your dreams. What will you do to stand out. How will you challenge the regular process of job searching to land your first job. Be creative. Be innovative. Be proactive. GO!
See how it’s done! Being Innovative and Proactive - http://triangle.news14.com/content/top_stories/637373/college-graduate-hits-the-streets-for-job-interview
Encourage Initiative in Others! Instead of asking “What isn’t working” start asking “what is working”. Posing this question stimulates new discussion. People slowly turn their cynicism into a positive outlook, concentrating their discussion on the positive elements of a project. When you build yourself up with positives, you then can help others so the same and take initiative to speak up in risky situations. Training as well as visualizing the situation and what to do before it needs to be done are helpful. Simple words, I know you can do it…actually work.
Your already doing it! Kirsten Victoria Jarrell HR Games tomorrow! I am so nervous! I hope we do well! :) February 25 at 10:02pm · Like ·  Caitlin Marie Falls GOOD LUCK !!!February 25 at 10:03pm · Like Brittany Tryon You all are going to do GREAT!! :)February 25 at 10:56pm · Like
Challenge with Purpose “The real dividing line is passion. As long as you believe what you’re doing is meaningful, you can cut through the fear and exhaustion and take the next step.” A since of meaning and purpose is what makes us want change. The motivation to deal with the challenges and uncertainties of life and work comes from the inside, and not from something that others hold out in front of you as some kind of carrot. True leaders tap into people’s hearts and minds, not merely their hands and wallets. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoeKCCpkgrw
EXERCISE OUTSIGHT Where do ideas for innovation come from? Customers, lead users, suppliers, business partners, labs. Most ideas for innovation comes from outside of the organization. You have the have the ability to hone in your “outsight”- the capacity to perceive external things- and then help your constituents develop that ability as well. Its only by staying in touch with the world around them that leaders can ever expect to change the business-as-usual environment.
PROMOTE EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL COMMUNICATION Organizations tend to cut off from critical information sources over time. Budget cuts on things like travel and training limit the very things that create new ideas. You have to listen to the world outside, there are not enough ideas floating around inside. LET IDEAS FLOW FREELY FROM THE OUTSIDE IN When you keep the doors to the outside world open, ideas and information can flow freely into the organization. If you want the innovative and competitive edge, then you need to destroy confining barriers and adopt an inquisitive attitude toward others opinions and insights. CHALLENGES OFTEN FIND YOU You can still get extraordinary things done if you’re leading a project that has been assigned to you. The question is: When opportunity knocks, are you prepared to open the door?
Experiment and Take Risks!
Can you think of a time that you could have taken a risk and challenged the process but didn’t?
PROGRESS STEP-BY-STEP Not every innovation works, and the best way to ensure success is to experiment with a lot of ideas, not just one or two big ones. Successful leaders help others see how breaking the journey down into measurable milestones can move them forward. TRY A LOT OF LITTLE THINGS You can do big things by doing lots of small things. Changes don’t happen all at once. SMALL WINS PRODUCE RESULTS Small wins build peoples confidence and reinforce their natural desire to feel successful. Small victories attract constituents, create momentum, and get people to remain on the path. Caitlin Marie Falls God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can;and wisdom to know the difference... February 21 at 9:39pm · Like ·
LEARN FROM EXPERINCE Learning happens when people feel comfortable in talking about both success and failure. It happens when people can openly talk about what went right and what went wrong. They ask “what can be learned from this experience.” CREATE A CLIMATE FOR LEARNING Promoting learning requires a spirit of inquiry and openness, patience, and building in a tolerance for error and a framework for forgiveness. Learning requires letting people try things they’ve never done before, thing that they probably won’t be all that good at the first time around. LEADERS ARE ACTIVE LEARNERS Leaders approach each new and unfamiliar experience with a willingness to learn, an appreciation for the importance of learning, and a recognition that learning necessarily involves making some mistakes.
VEIW CHANGE AS CHALLENGE Although every leader should experiment, take risks, and learn from the accompanying mistakes, we know that many learning experiences can be very stressful and painful. Instead of being debilitated by the stress of a difficult experience, leaders said they were challenges and energized by it. Stress always accompanies the pursuit of excellence, but when you’re doing your best it never overtakes you. Brittany Tryon ‎" you can't change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust your sails to always reach your destination." Yesterday at 12:51pm · Like ·
What did we learn here? Leaders are experimenters! They venture outside the constraints of normal routine and experiment with creative and risky solutions! When things seem to be falling apart, leaders show their constituents the exciting new world they can create from the pieces!
We are leaders! We have the power! What are the possibilities? Amanda Puryear wins national sumo wrestling championship! Melissa making a difference in the lives of children around the world! Bianca Boles, SHERM USA President!
Tell us one thing you learned today! What did you take away that you will use as a leader?
