La Catedral de Ibiza se construyó originalmente en el siglo XIII como una parroquia dedicada a Santa María, en el punto más alto de la ciudad. A lo largo de los siglos ha sufrido numerosas reformas que han añadido elementos góticos, barrocos y neoclásicos, reflejando la mezcla de estilos. En 1782 la iglesia medieval se convirtió en la Catedral de la nueva diócesis de Ibiza.

El convenio firmado en el año 1234 por
los conquistadores de las islas Pitiusas,
Guillermo de Montgrí, Pedro de Portugal
y Nunó Sanç, fijaba la construcción de
una parroquia dedicada a Santa María
como una de las primeras obligaciones
en la Vila de Eivissa.
El conjunto formado por la Catedral y
el Castillo ocupan el punto más elevado
de Dalt Vila y de toda la ciudad, elegido
como lugar de culto por distintas
civilizaciones a lo largo de los siglos.
En este enclave se erigió la antigua
mezquita árabe, sustituta de un templo
romano, y éste, a su vez, pudo ser
levantado sobre construcciones fenicias
y púnicas.
The agreement signed in 1234 by the
conquerors of the Pitiusas Islands,
Guillermo de Montgrí, Pedro de Portugal
and Nunó Sanç, fixed the construction
of a parish dedicated to Santa María as
one of the first obligations in the Vila de
Eivissa.
The ensemble formed by the Cathedral
and the Castle occupy the highest point
of Dalt Vila and the entire city, chosen
as a place of worship by different
civilizations over the centuries. In this
enclave the old Arab mosque, substitute
of a Roman temple was erected, and
this one, as well, could be raised on
Phoenician and Punic constructions.

Así, la parroquia de Santa María fue una
realidad un mes después de la conquista
catalana de 1235. El ábside y la torre del
campanario, de estilo gótico, son del siglo
XIV. La Catedral, sin embargo, presenta
una mezcla de estilos fruto de las
continuas reformas. En 1538 se le añadió
la capilla honda y en 1592 la sacristía,
cubierta por bóveda de crucería.

Thus, the parish of Santa María was
a reality one month after the Catalan
conquest of 1235. The apse and the
bell tower, of Gothic style, date back
to the 14th century. The Cathedral,
nevertheless, presents a mixture of
styles fruit of the continuous reforms. In
1538 the deep chapel was added to it and
in 1592 the sacristy, covered by vault of
crucería.

3. La construcción de las murallas afectó
gravemente a su estructura, aunque las
reparaciones no se iniciaron hasta 1712
y supusieron las sustitución de múltiples
elementos góticos por otros barrocos.
En el año 1782 el papa Pío VI erigió la
sede episcopal de Eivissa y la iglesia
medieval, renovada, se convirtió en la
Catedral, que tendría que permanecer
perpetuamente sufragánea de
Tarragona, igual que había sucedido
en su estado anterior de parroquia, a
causa de la vinculación de los antiguos
conquistadores.
The construction of the walls seriously
affected its structure, although repairs
did not begin until 1712 and involved the
replacement of multiple Gothic elements
by Baroque ones.
In the year 1782 Pope Pius VI erected
the episcopal seat of Eivissa and the
medieval church, renewed, became the
Cathedral, which would have to remain
perpetually suffragan of Tarragona, just
as it had happened in its previous state
of parish, because of the connection of
the old conquerors.

4. La catedral conserva numerosas obras
de arte, entre las que destacan una
custodia gótica de plata dorada, hecha
por Francesc Martí en el 1399, dos tablas
góticas de Santa Tecla y San Antonio,
pintadas por Francesc Comes en el siglo
XIV y otras dos, en este caso del siglo
XV, del maestro Valentí Montoliu, que
representan a San Jaime y San Matías
El exterior destaca por su sobriedad y
la robustez de sus contrafuertes. Una
talla de Santa Tecla corona la portada.
El interior es más barroco, con capillas
a los lados y en el ábside. Cuenta con
importantes obras de arte, muchas
de las cuales se exponen en el Museo
Diocesano, al que se accede desde el
mismo templo.
The cathedral preserves numerous
works of art, among which stand out a
gothic custody of gilded silver, made by
Francesc Martí in 1399, two gothic tables
of Santa Tecla and San Antonio, painted
by Francesc Comes in the fourteenth
century and two others, in this case of
the XV century, of the teacher Valentí
Montoliu, who represent San Jaime and
San Matías
The exterior stands out for its sobriety
and the robustness of its buttresses. A
carving of Santa Tecla crowns the
cover. The interior is more baroque, with
chapels on the sides and in the apse. It
has important works of art, many of
which are exhibited in the Diocesan
Museum, which is accessed from the
same temple .
