1. Unit 27
Task 2 – Performance Strengths and
Areas for Improvement
2. Strength 1/4
• Excellence Trait: Balance
• Having good balance is important as it enables him to
stay on his feet for as long as possible, whilst having
to control the game. Balance would be something he
needs when taking on defenders, as he needs to be
able to take the ball at pace, run at defenders whilst
staying on his feet when trying to get over the game
line, to hopefully create quick ball, another example
is giving a long pass as he rotates his upper body
whilst continuing to go forward, requiring balance,
his is a advantage for him making him effective when
he has the ball in hand. If Daan had poor balance, he
wouldn’t be very effective,
3. Strength 2/4
• Excellence Trait: Co-ordination
• Hand/eye co-ordination, being able to run and catch
then pass the ball. This is something which all the
players need to be able to do, but someone playing in
Daan’s position, it is even more important and he has
to be able to run onto the ball at pace then be able
pass the ball off both hands over a distance 10 metres
comfortably. He also has good co-ordination with his
feet, which is an advantage, making him effective. If
Daan didn't have good co-ordination, this could limit
how often he gets selected or plays. Making it
something which would have to constantly trained.
4. Strength 3/4
• Excellence Trait: Concentration
• Focusing on the task in hand without getting
distracted by the crowd or the opposition. Daan has
to focused on the ball when receiving it, which is
something he does well, as if he takes his eye off it to
look at the opposition coming towards him, he is
likely to miss the ball as he isn’t concentration on it,
which could cause a knock on, giving them the ball
which could result in them scoring. A disadvantage
however is, if he is too focused on doing 1 thing,
then he may not be concentration on other things
around him, such as were his teammates are.
5. Strength 4/4
• Excellence Trait: Body Composition
• If you aren’t the right shape for playing in a
position, you aren’t as effective as you possibly
could be. Daan has this advantage as for a fly-
half he has a good body composition as he has
no excess fat, and is strong for his size, making
him effective for his position, as he is able to run
through defenders and stay on his feet if tackled.
A disadvantage however is, if he receives a
heavy hit, there is a chance of an injury occuring.
6. Development Area 1/4
• Excellence Trait: When to kick
• Knowing when the right time to kick is, and where to
place the kick . This could become an advantage for
him and the team if he learnt when is the correct
time to kick. An example of when a good time to
kick is when his team is stuck in their own 22, this is
when he would need to kick it out into touch as high
up the pitch as possible. This is because it will
relieve some of the pressure on the team and give
them a territory advantage. But it is a disadvantage
for him as not all his kicks reach touch, which gives
them the ball and allows them to attack, putting his
team under pressure again.
7. Development Area 2/4
• Excellence Trait: Flexibility
• Flexibility to being able to achieve a good range of
movement, strengthening the joints and muscles at
the same time without the risk of causing injury to
yourself. Daan’s flexibility isn’t were he feels it should
be, leaving him at a disadvantage as flexibility is
important for a number of different parts of the
game, such as when giving a long pass as he rotates
his upper body whilst continuing to go forward. As
well as when rucking, if he doesn’t get in a low
enough position then he could get rucked over and
possibly get injured. Having a flexibility program will
also promote relaxation, as having tight muscles or
having overly active muscles can predispose to
fatigue, aches and pains.
8. Development Area 3/4
• Excellence Trait: Control of Anxiety
• Being able to focus on doing the task in hand
without worrying about any other factors. From
doing the API/ASA test this appears to be an
disadvantage for Daan, an example of when he
could be under pressure would be when in his 22,
and has to kick to touch, he could be worrying
about miskicking it, or being charged down, he
will have to block these thoughts out and focus
on the kick. If he kicked poorly then he puts his
team on the back foot and under more pressure.
Which would only increase his anxiety.
9. Development Area 4/4
• Excellence Trait: When to Run Plays
• Knowing then the best time to run set plays are. This
all comes down to being smart and having good
tactics, and being able to read the game and what is
in front of you. He has to know the attacking
systems and how they can be used effectively, to
increase the teams chances of winning. However if
he does decide to run a certain play, but a gap in
front of him appears he has to be able to make a
decision whether or not to change the play, this is all
about being able to read what it in front of him. But
at the moment Daan struggles to do this, giving him
a disadvantage, however an advantage Daan does
have is that when he does have the ball in hand he
runs very well with it.
