ISCN 2015 Dialogue 2: Regional Perspectives on Global Change, John Robinson
1. Campus as Regional Sustainability Test-Bed
Universities uniquely
suited for this role:
• Single (owner-) occupiers
• Public mandate
• Teaching
• Research
Work with private, public and NGO partners to apply this knowledge
Develop integrated campus-
scale systems:
• Demonstration and research
• Engage and train students;
new curricula & programs

Questions
What processes? At what scale? Role of universities…
Regenerative Sustainability
• From less bad to more good
• From reducing damage to creating benefits
• From sacrifice to contribution
• From net zero to net positive

9. Teaching & Learning Vision:
Integration across the University
Each student, regardless of their degree program, should
have access to an education in sustainability via a
“sustainability learning pathway” (UBC Sustainability
Academic Strategy, 2009)
Sustainability Pathways
First - our background and context
UBC is siignificantly large
We have 2 campuses situated in different geographic regions,. Our Vancouver campus has over 400 buildings and over 50K student
In fact, our scale makes our sustainability work of interest to local governments and industry.
We were the first Canadian university to develop a sustainable development policy, open a sustainability office in 1997, and meet our Kyoto targets, 5 years early. We were also the first Canadian university to earn a Gold rating in STARS.
But beyond operational achievements, our students and faculty are responsible for impactful inititiaves such as the establishment of, know globally know company used to offset emissions from the Vancouver Olympics, creating the ecological footprint concept, and opening of UBC’s first LEED Platinum CIRS building – our first living lab project.
Vision to integrate sustainability teaching & learning across all academic disciplines is ambitious, in part due to the siloed organizational structure of universities.

I will now overview our new strategy for next generation sustainability at UBC’s Vancouver Campus.
This is next step in sustainability journey: maintain and build on our leadership role
Increasingly student applicants are asking for sustainability courses and programs, and graduates are expected to contribute to sustainability in their jobs and communities. We need to ensure our graduates will be prepared as agents of change to influence sustainability of other communities and to contribute to global citizenship.
One of very few universities with such a strategy
Provides strategic direction and marching orders for next few years
Our sustainability activities are of interest to cities and have potential to inspire other organizations and communities.
