INNOBITE’s 1st Workshop
INNOBITE project’s “Biorefinery and Nanocellulose Workshop” aims to disseminate the
potential of lignocellulosic materials from two perspectives: nanocellulose-based products
and biorefinery-derived chemicals, focusing in both cases on existing and upcoming markets.
The whole INNOBITE project www.innobite.eu is framed under the European initiative to build
up sustainable production and consumption patterns where the efficiency of natural resources
is taken to its maximum.
Biorefineries and the INNOBITE project
A biorefinery is a highly sustainable process that enables the
successive extraction of the different valuable fractions of
plants, similar to how a crude oil refinery enables extraction of valua-
ble fractions from crude oil. One of the main objectives of the INNOBI-
TE project is “to develop and integrate a biorefinery process that is an
environmentally acceptable method for the effective extraction of the
inorganic fraction of wheat straw” , a sub-process that has not yet been
developed nor integrated in existing biorefineries.
In addition to the inorganic fraction, the biorefinery process will also
provide cellulose and lignin. These fractions, along with the inorga-
nic fraction (mainly silica) can then be used to produce Lignin based
thermosetting (L-TS) resin, lignin based thermoplastic (L-TP) resin and
silica biocomposite, which in turn can be used in the production of
decking, fencing and indoor panels.
Nanocellulose and the INNOBITE Project
Nanocellulose or microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) is an outstan-
ding material that builds up the cell walls of plants (i.e. lignocellulosic
materials) and thus, in paper. The high aspect ratio (length/diameter
ratio) of these MFC makes them ideal to be used as a reinforcing ele-
ment in plastic composites.
A big challenge of the INNOBITE project is “to develop a method for
the production of MFC from recycled paper that balances, from the
ecological point of view, the environmental impact of the recycling sta-
ge and the energy required for MFC production”. The MFC produced
in this way can then be used to produce MFC films, which in turn, and
along with L-TS resin from the biorefinery process can be used in the
production of indoor panels.
