  4. 4. LIVESTOCK CONTRIBUTION TO IGAD MS ECONOMY IGAD member countries export about 12.8 million sheep and goats and 80,000 metric tons of meat belonging to 2.0 million livestock producers.
  5. 5. TRANSHUMANCE INTER-PLAYS Transhumance Livestock Grazing Land • Transhumance is the seasonal movement of pastoralists and their herds from their usual grazing land, mainly in search of water and pasture • Mobility is NOT OPTIONAL, but a critical ingredient
  6. 6. SECURITY IN MOBILITY IN THE IGAD REGION • Regional (cross-border) mobility is the primary coping and resilience mechanism for pastoralist communities • Seasonal mobility of livestock and herders in search of water and pasture occasioned by the cyclic climate variability • Can lead to upsurge of resource-based conflicts, disease spread if not well managed. • Regional Protocol on Transhumance is strategy to optimize production and for survival.
