LIVESTOCK CONTRIBUTION TO IGAD MS ECONOMY
IGAD member countries export about 12.8 million
sheep and goats and 80,000 metric tons of meat
belonging to 2.0 million livestock producers.

• Mobility is NOT
OPTIONAL, but a critical

SECURITY IN MOBILITY IN THE IGAD REGION
• Regional (cross-border) mobility is the primary coping
and resilience mechanism for pastoralist communities
• Seasonal mobility of livestock and herders in search of
water and pasture occasioned by the cyclic climate
variability
• Can lead to upsurge of resource-based conflicts,
disease spread if not well managed.
• Regional Protocol on Transhumance is strategy to
optimize production and for survival.
