  1. 1. Cartography and Communication Dr. Shaozhong SHI drshishaozhong@gmail.com
  2. 2. Importance  Cartographical visualisation is very important in communicating geoscientific findings. It allows depiction of a wide range of interrelated natural features and processes operating within the Earth system. Cartography allows visualising and communicating research findings in a more accessible manner.  Aesthetically produced cartographical illustrations can be overwhelmingly attractive and create visual impact. Visually appealing cartographical illustrations can effectively communicate research findings and technological advances.
  3. 3. A modern computational approach for generating map illustrations and products  Production of cartographical illustrations is one of important means for visualising geoscientific phenomena. It allows amalgamating mapping efforts and compilation of geoscientific results. Computerised cartography allows generation and management of visual products efficiently and effectively.  Well designed cartographical maps and illustrations can be easily understood by a wide range of people. Thus, research findings can be communicated effectively to a diverse range of audiences including policy makers and the general public. Particularly, it can be used for producing interpretative illustrations for unveiling the fascinating and much less known correlated geological events over the space.
  4. 4. Cartography: an indispensable methodological approach  Images derived from processing of remotely sensed data may often be not accessible to general information users. This is particularly the case when false colour images are generated.  Annotations, legends and explanations can assist general users in understanding the meanings presented by graphics and images.  Well designed cartographical illustrations can offer visual clarity and drawing together spatial phenomena from various sources.  Symbolic representations can transmit messages on patterns of distribution of spatial phenomena and correlations clearly.
