Chroma Intra Prediction Based on Inter-Channel 
Correlation for HEVC 
Abstract—In this paper, we investigate a new inter-channel coding mode called LM mode 
proposed for the next generation video coding standard called high efficiency video coding. This 
mode exploits inter-channel correlation using reconstructed luma to predict chroma linearly with 
parameters derived from neighboring reconstructed luma and chroma pixels at both encoder and 
decoder to avoid overhead signaling. In this paper, we analyze the LM mode and prove that the 
LM parameters for predicting original chroma and reconstructed chroma are statistically the 
same. We also analyze the error sensitivity of the LM parameters. We identify some LM mode 
problematic situations and propose three novel LM- like modes called LMA, LML, and LMO to 
address the situations. To limit the increase in complexity due to the LM- like modes, we propose 
some fast algorithms with the help of some new cost functions. We further identify some 
potentially-problematic conditions in the parameter est imation (including regression dilution 
problem) and introduce a novel model correction technique to detect and correct those 
conditions. Simulation results suggest that considerable BD-rate reduction can be achieved by 
the proposed LM- like modes and model correction technique. In addition, the performance gain 
of the two techniques appears to be essentially additive when combined.
Existing method: 
Another type of problem occurs in the LM mode parameter computation, mainly due to the 
quantization error in the neighoring reconstructed luma and chroma samples. The α1 and β1, 
specified in (7), are defined to minimize the mean square prediction error along the inner border 
of the current block, based on the reconstructed luma and chroma samples along the outer 
border. In the previous section, we analyzed the effect of the quantization error in the 
reconstructed chroma samples by pointing out that the same optimal LMMSE filter coefficients 
will be obtained regardless of whether the original chroma or the reconstructed chroma is to be 
linearly predicted. In this section we examine the effect of quantization error in the 
reconstructed luma samples, and propose some remedial model correction. 
Proposed method: 
the cross-channel residual prediction technique to improve the chroma prediction. In [19], an 
additional mode called RM mode is proposed. When the RM mode is used, the prediction of 
chroma samples contains two steps. Step 1, predict the chroma samples by the mode derived 
from luma intra prediction mode (i.e. same as DM mode); Step 2, predict the residual chroma 
samples by reconstructed residual luma samples of the same block via a linear model. The 
parameters in RM mode are derived on the encoder side, quantized and encoded in the bitstream. 
In [20], the residual of Cr component is linearly predicted from the reconstructed residual of Cb 
with the parameter to be a negative fixed value in order to save complexity. Instead of creating
any additional mode, this technique is applied to all the regular chroma modes (except LM) 
directly as a second step for the Cr component only. 
Merits: 
1. Better PSNR values 
2. Output image more enhancement. 
3. Low BER rate 
Demerits: 
1.noise level is very high 
2. restoration process time is very high.

This mode exploits inter-channel correlation using reconstructed luma to predict chroma linearly with parameters derived from neighboring reconstructed luma and chroma pixels at both encoder and decoder to avoid overhead signaling. In this paper, we analyze the LM mode and prove that the LM parameters for predicting original chroma and reconstructed chroma are statistically the same. We also analyze the error sensitivity of the LM parameters. We identify some LM mode problematic situations and propose three novel LM- like modes called LMA, LML, and LMO to address the situations. To limit the increase in complexity due to the LM- like modes, we propose some fast algorithms with the help of some new cost functions. We further identify some potentially-problematic conditions in the parameter est imation (including regression dilution problem) and introduce a novel model correction technique to detect and correct those conditions. Simulation results suggest that considerable BD-rate reduction can be achieved by the proposed LM- like modes and model correction technique. In addition, the performance gain of the two techniques appears to be essentially additive when combined.

  • 3. Existing method: Another type of problem occurs in the LM mode parameter computation, mainly due to the quantization error in the neighoring reconstructed luma and chroma samples. The α1 and β1, specified in (7), are defined to minimize the mean square prediction error along the inner border of the current block, based on the reconstructed luma and chroma samples along the outer border. In the previous section, we analyzed the effect of the quantization error in the reconstructed chroma samples by pointing out that the same optimal LMMSE filter coefficients will be obtained regardless of whether the original chroma or the reconstructed chroma is to be linearly predicted. In this section we examine the effect of quantization error in the reconstructed luma samples, and propose some remedial model correction. Proposed method: the cross-channel residual prediction technique to improve the chroma prediction. In [19], an additional mode called RM mode is proposed. When the RM mode is used, the prediction of chroma samples contains two steps. Step 1, predict the chroma samples by the mode derived from luma intra prediction mode (i.e. same as DM mode); Step 2, predict the residual chroma samples by reconstructed residual luma samples of the same block via a linear model. The parameters in RM mode are derived on the encoder side, quantized and encoded in the bitstream. In [20], the residual of Cr component is linearly predicted from the reconstructed residual of Cb with the parameter to be a negative fixed value in order to save complexity. Instead of creating
  • 4. any additional mode, this technique is applied to all the regular chroma modes (except LM) directly as a second step for the Cr component only. Merits: 1. Better PSNR values 2.
