MOVING FORWARD WITH
MIGRATION TO POWER WHERE
PERFORMANCE IS REDEFINED
POB03039-USEN-04
Question: “When looking at moving
your business-critical applications
and data to a new platform, what’s
the first thing you think about?”
If your answer is “I don’t think…I
worry,” then a complimentary Migration
Assessment for IBM Power Systems™
can help put those fears aside and
address any concerns about risk.
With budgets under pressure, many
businesses have turned to solutions
built on open standards in order to
reduce costs. Power servers offer
superior capabilities for big data
analytics, industry application solutions,
open source infrastructure services,
and other emerging workloads. Power
solutions help more clients deliver new
services faster, with higher quality, and
with superior economics to improve
their business performance.
A complimentary IBM migration
assessment for customers that
examines the business and technical
aspects associated with migrating to
Power is a time-tested first step that
can provide valuable insights. Our
experienced engagement team can
help identify the major components
of the application — and determine
complexity — to help mitigate costs
and risks. We leverage many person-
years of successful application
migration knowledge and experience
across all industries.
MIGRATION ASSESSMENT
Depending on the nature and scope
of the workload to be migrated, the
tasks and duration may vary.
Initial Call. Discovery call with a
Migration Factory Solution Manager
will review your requirements and
understand scope with a view to
developing the most appropriate
solution for your needs. The Migration
Factory is able to assist customers with
migrations from numerous platforms,
including other flavors of UNIX, x86
Linux and Windows.
Data Collection. To help us gain the
necessary information about your
migrating workloads, we can deploy
a number of mechanisms to gather
the data automatically. That data is
supplemented with manual input. This
output helps us build a concise picture
of your applications and data, which we
leverage in subsequent activities.
Workshops. When developing
your solution, we require a clear
understanding of the workloads to be
migrated and how they will be tested,
as well as insight into any business
constraints that require planning
consideration. Telephone and/or on-
site workshops give us an opportunity
to collaborate with you and fill any
knowledge gaps.
Analysis. Once our assessment team
has all of the required information
they can quickly begin their analysis.
Combining IBM expertise with your
workload information will help to refine
the resultant deliverables to ensure an
optimal approach to migration.
Deliverables. There are three primary
deliverables from an assessment:
• Assessment/report containing
assumptions, scope (situational
analysis and migration approach),
project responsibilities and time and
materials cost estimate
• Project Plan that describes the
project and resource responsibilities
• Workload Inventory of the in-scope
applications and/or databases that
form the basis of our determinations
TYPICAL ASSESSMENT TIMELINE
The overall duration can vary based on
scope and availability of resources to
support the assessment team. The data
provided during the initial calls with you
will help us schedule and determine
overall duration of the assessment.
• Workshops ~1 half day
• Deliverables ~1–6 working weeks
• Presentation to client upon comple-
tion of the above
WHAT IS THE ASSESSMENT?
The assessment seeks to provide
answers to the questions asked by
customers when faced with a migration:
• Is it feasible?
• What level of customer participation
will be required? Can it be done
within budget?
• How long will it take?
• Have other customers gone down
similar paths?
• What are the operational
considerations and overall risk
assessment?
• What other actions should be taken
during a migration? What should be
avoided?
IBM COMPLIMENTARY
MIGRATION ASSESSMENT
IBM Power Systems’ demonstrated
capability to provide a proven, stable,
and predictable roadmap has been
a factor in thousands of server
migrations from competitive UNIX
platforms to Power servers.
Should you decide to proceed with
the migration project, we will help
you determine the Power Systems
configuration that is right for you and
obtain your approval of our proposal
to initiate the project. The first step in
the engagement will be a readiness
assessment to determine if the Power
Systems are installed and ready and
that your resources are scheduled to
support our team as appropriate.
2 SIMPLE STEPS TO GET STARTED:
Step 1: Contact 1-866-MIGR8TE
or migr8te@us.ibm.com
Step 2: An IBM representative will contact
you within one business day to better
understand your interest, business
requirements and answer any additional
questions.

IBM COMPLIMENTARY MIGRATION ASSESSMENT

  • 1. MOVING FORWARD WITH MIGRATION TO POWER WHERE PERFORMANCE IS REDEFINED POB03039-USEN-04 Question: “When looking at moving your business-critical applications and data to a new platform, what’s the first thing you think about?” If your answer is “I don’t think…I worry,” then a complimentary Migration Assessment for IBM Power Systems™ can help put those fears aside and address any concerns about risk. With budgets under pressure, many businesses have turned to solutions built on open standards in order to reduce costs. Power servers offer superior capabilities for big data analytics, industry application solutions, open source infrastructure services, and other emerging workloads. Power solutions help more clients deliver new services faster, with higher quality, and with superior economics to improve their business performance. A complimentary IBM migration assessment for customers that examines the business and technical aspects associated with migrating to Power is a time-tested first step that can provide valuable insights. When developing your solution, we require a clear understanding of the workloads to be migrated and how they will be tested, as well as insight into any business constraints that require planning consideration. Telephone and/or on- site workshops give us an opportunity to collaborate with you and fill any knowledge gaps. Analysis. Once our assessment team has all of the required information they can quickly begin their analysis. Combining IBM expertise with your workload information will help to refine the resultant deliverables to ensure an optimal approach to migration. Deliverables. There are three primary deliverables from an assessment: • Assessment/report containing assumptions, scope (situational analysis and migration approach), project responsibilities and time and materials cost estimate • Project Plan that describes the project and resource responsibilities • Workload Inventory of the in-scope applications and/or databases that form the basis of our determinations TYPICAL ASSESSMENT TIMELINE The overall duration can vary based on scope and availability of resources to support the assessment team. The data provided during the initial calls with you will help us schedule and determine overall duration of the assessment. • Workshops ~1 half day • Deliverables ~1–6 working weeks • Presentation to client upon comple- tion of the above WHAT IS THE ASSESSMENT? The assessment seeks to provide answers to the questions asked by customers when faced with a migration: • Is it feasible? • What level of customer participation will be required? Can it be done within budget? • How long will it take? • Have other customers gone down similar paths? • What are the operational considerations and overall risk assessment? • What other actions should be taken during a migration? What should be avoided? IBM COMPLIMENTARY MIGRATION ASSESSMENT IBM Power Systems’ demonstrated capability to provide a proven, stable, and predictable roadmap has been a factor in thousands of server migrations from competitive UNIX platforms to Power servers. Should you decide to proceed with the migration project, we will help you determine the Power Systems configuration that is right for you and obtain your approval of our proposal to initiate the project. The first step in the engagement will be a readiness assessment to determine if the Power Systems are installed and ready and that your resources are scheduled to support our team as appropriate. 2 SIMPLE STEPS TO GET STARTED: Step 1: Contact 1-866-MIGR8TE or migr8te@us.ibm.com Step 2: An IBM representative will contact you within one business day to better understand your interest, business requirements and answer any additional questions.
