A Critique of the Proposed National Education Policy Reform

3. India accounts for 2.1 million of the 9.7 million annual under-five child deaths (21 per cent of the global burden of child deaths).

5. Cont….. New born care is very important to reduce the child mortality because neonatal causes of mortality accounts for about 37 % of under five mortality in India.
6. Objectives To asses the new born care practices. To asses the child immunization coverage.
7. Material & Method Study Area: This study was carried out form June 2005-February 2007, in the districts of Allahabad (Urban & Rural), Mirzapur, Kaushambi, Ballia, Jaunpur, Pratapgarh, Sonbhadra. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Sampling Technique: WHO thirty cluster sampling methodology was used. Sample Size- 1000-1500 households per districts.
13. Conclusions- It was observed that taking weight of children after birth was not customary in most of the districts. It was observed that in most of the districts more than 50% of children were bathed immediately after birth.
14. Cont……….. Practice of breast feeding to newborn within one hour after birth was not popular and in most of the districts was less than 20%. The percentage of baby on exclusive breast feeding up to six month in most of the districts was low & in most of the districts it was less than10%.

This study was carried out as a part of state wide survey for the Government of Uttar Pradesh by the Department of Community Medicine, M.L.N. Medical College, Allahabad in the selected Districts of Uttar Pradesh.
Recently delivered women who gave birth during last two years in 1st round of survey & with in last 1 year in 2nd year.Further questions relating to routine immunization were separately asked for children age 12-23 months.
So new born care practices & immunization coverage in uttar pradesh is very poor & Govt. of india has launched RCH-ii programme in which emphasis is on education to mothers on breast feeding and routine immunization of children against 6 vaccine preventable diseases. Under the umbrella of NRHM which was launched in 2005, Janani Suraksha Yojna is there to promote institutional deliveries, IMNCI to improve the management of childhood & neonatal illness. Let us have a hope that the situation will improve in near future.
