- Now although Simpson has historically been a manufacturing company I take some pride in seeing our industry on the higher end of this productivity index, but because we are highly focused on the construction sector we must also realize we have contributed to this dismal performance of our industry. Since 1950 the construction industry has seen a ONE POINT ONE total change in Productivity growth rate compared to manufacturing’s 8.6x and 16.1x in Agriculture. This graphic has been used multiple times to continue to banter on about how complicated our industry is and why as compared to others Construction is such a poor performer. I’m encouraged to see this many thought leaders here, who are willing to improve upon this statistic and ensure over they few decades we see this index improve significantly. However, we cannot ignore the fact that our industry continues to lag behind others, and that there may be some successes which we can use in Construction to realize larger efficiency gains can be made even on a large scale.
- As we look back to the 1950’s lets use a few parallels…to find a point of reference of process… Just as a point of reference lets look at the Movie watching Experience along a similar timeline. How many in the audience recall going to a marquee theater? 3D & Smell-O-Vision were experiments Cinerama or Wrap around screens were being tested…
- How many in the audience recall getting their first Video Home System movie player? Remember the battle between the superior Beta Max technology but the market share leader in VHS? This opened up the cinema experience at the convivence of being at home.
- Now we move to DVD and not having to “Be Kind & Rewind” motto. Quality improved, we can skip around w/ chapters, special features, improved Dolby sound…this started the move from analog to digital content.
- And now when was the last time your rented a movie from a Blockbuster Store. We can now watch any show new or old, movie or TV content on demand where ever we are on our personal device.
- But we are not stopping there…where are we going w/ the future of entertainment… Augmented reality, immersive experiences, are not a thing of the future but they are here now. If you doubt how far these have come simply check out the immersive experience w/ the Void…
- So again…since 1950 we have come for marquee only theaters to completely immersive digital experiences which trick our thoughts & minds into being in the real Ghostbusters Movie
- But this thought experiment is not only limited to movies, as we can perform a very similar exercise w/ many of the commonly known elements of our society today from How we get from point A to B
- How we navigate between point A & B
- How our health will be monitored and how we are treated?
- How we shop for groceries
- And how we grow food?
- And when we look at all of these examples they all share one common thread: In these example they have all gone digital: Now the Movie industry incrementally evolved. 8mm Film to Magnetic Tap to Digital Content delivered on DVDs to Digital Content via a Network. Netflix didn’t wait for complimentary technologies such as network infrastructure or higher bandwidth to get off the starting line, they had the foresight to predict there would be a delivery mechanism for that content and positioned themselves. Blockbuster looked at slow network speed as a weighted factor in the decision criteria to NOT buy Netflix. Waze wasn’t interested in just another digital map informing the user of the closest distance between two points, they wanted the quickest route between two point at that point in TIME. They predicted the benefit of a platform mediated network effect of each driver having a transmitter in their pocket and the ability to report back location, pace and direction in close to “real time.” Was it going to be each vehicle on the road…nope…was it going to be perfect real time….nope…but they knew it was better than status-quo.
- What is we applied some of these same principles to our industry? What would be the collective impact across all these areas… Can digital data improve the accuracy of a Sales Proforma so it pencils out with a higher probability? Can digital data ensure Off Site Construction is valid based upon a digital audit of the physical concrete pour & site work or better yet that same digital model creates the physical concrete & physical site work Will digital data drive robotics on the job site? Will digital data help better manage labor constraints through improved communication, language translation, and measured metrics? Will digital data help align manufactured parts with site demand with not just real-time tracking en-route to job site, but within a job-site? Will digital data help the Home Owner maintain the structure following the guidelines to optimize performance? What other value adds will this digital data permit in those areas which are yet to be discovered? Now we don’t pretend to know all the possible ways in which this data can be purposed & re-purposed d to provide value to the industry, but we do know that it will not be determined by a single company, single software, nor single vision. Ensuring the digital data created by our services & technologies can be reincarnated in the future to the benefit of the industry is what we are focused on.
- So how does this translate to you? Now the classic adage shown here is what we all face each & every day. Now just because we can offer the latest technological solution of an unmanned, tree cutting, robot, doesn’t mean your company is ready for that. Maybe all you need is an incremental step of using a chainsaw opposed to an axe.s
- So what we are going at Simpson Strong-Tie & CG Visions is offering pragmatic solutions which utilize both 2d & 3d offerings. Sometimes a quick & dirty takeoff is all that is needed for Quoting purposes. Other times a detailed 3d model is justified due to production requirements. Since our solutions work in a 0d, 2d & 3d capacity you have the ability to evolve when it makes sense. Also, because we are focused on an open platform philosophy we have built efficiency tools on top of market mature products to ensure the longevity of your digital efforts.
- One of the key components of working w/ Hyphen is a common customer base in both the Builder, Pro Dealer & LBM market segments. We understand & can support both segments to the improvement of all. In this mutually beneficial relationship, collaboration is key. By supporting some very tight initiatives of collaboration, while also permitting some light areas both groups are well positioned & protected to serve the other better while preserving their interests as well. This flexibility is permitted as neither side is constricted nor mandated to follow a single software stack to collaborate.
- With this partnership we have agreed how to digitally handshake data between our systems. Digital 3d Design data & 2d Takeoff data can transfer between systems without duplicate data entry. Be it a Bill of Materials going into Hyphen Brix or Purchase Orders being handed over to Hyphen BuildPro our joint customers will not only save time but will significantly improving upon data accuracy & preservation. Both Simpson Strong-Tie/CG Visions & Hyphen Solutions believe in directing their focus to being a contributive member to the ecosystem not attempting to dictate it.
- Now this collaboration will be to the benefit of you all in this room, the builders & suppliers who are determining the best pat to “Go Digital” So with that being said, we want to hand the presentation over to Chip Bishop who is the General Manager of Robuck Homes. Chip is one of you…a builder peer who is currently on this journey “to nirvana” in having all his digital systems tied together. Systems which encompass Design, Estimation, Purchasing, Sales, Finance, Scheduling, Trade Communication, etc….all under the banner of systems which have agreed on a method of communication.
