6. Social Learning in form of a Community
"A Social Learning Community brings
back learning to the workplace!"
Quotation from "Social Learning and the digital age" (forthcoming).
7. A question beforehand:
What do you think: When will learning be
successful?
In the long run it's impossible to remember a sentence or a paragraph in an
organized way without an understanding of the meaning of the information unit
(Quotation bases on "Psychology" from Philip Zimbardo).
9. Thesis 1
The classical idea of Knowledge-
Management ist on the wrong path.
Knowledge always is a product of a
community.
„That’s a major benefit of living in social groups, to make it easy to share our skills
and knowledge. It’s not surprising that we fail to identify what’s in our heads versus
what’s in others‘, because we’re generally – perhaps always – doing things that
involve both“ (Sloman & Fernbach 2016, S. 14).
10. Thesis 2
To acquire knowledge is for people a
meaningful process. It also can only be
shared by people who know something
(meaningful) in concrete structures, e.g.
the own employees.
„When humans interact with one another, they do not merely experience the same
event; they also know they are experiencing the same event“ (Sloman & Fernbach
2016, S. 115).
11. Thesis 3
A natural way to create knowledge is to
collaborate in a social manner: To do it as
a social collaboration on an ESN like
Connections.
„This means that the contributions [of knowledge] we make as individuals depend
more on our ability to work with others than on our individual mental horsepower
[…] It also means that we learn best when we’re thinking with others. Some of the
best teaching techniques at every level of education have students learning as a
team“ (Sloman & Fernbach 2016, S. 16).
13. Concepts & Aims I
The Community Konzept

Learning together
• in the knot of existing or new networks
• with documents, pictures, videos and bookmarks
• due to comments, recommendations and mentionings
• as Peers (colleagues) in the learning process
• online and offline (Blended-Learning)
• producing the necessary content by the members themselves
The basically needed Tools are
• Blogs
• Wikis
• Forums
• Comments
• Profiles
• and only sometimes: Documents or the underlying Data

19. What we are missing in Connections
•A stable and flexible realtime Chat to embed it in the
communities (we are using slack for this purpose).
•A "virtual (Class-) Room" like vitero for example. (Also
as possibility to embed it in designated communities).
•The possibility of direct recording and cutting videos
as comments or other contributions to topics.
20. … and of course: An AI like Watson
•Watson as part of the toolset designed for
Communities means
• that the Community members will decide what they want to
do with watson (where it can be helpful) and
• therefore Watson as a social Application that
• can be "designed" by the Community to be really helpful.
