Cisco 3400 as BN in MEN network
Jan2011 –Mar2011
Role: Senior Domain Engineer
Description:
A Metro Ethernet is a computer network that covers a metropolitan area and that is based on the
Ethernet standard. It is commonly used as a metropolitan access network to connect subscribers and
businesses to a larger service network or the Internet. Metro Ethernet is also used to connect branch
offices to their Intranet. Reliance Metro Ethernet is a 3 layered ring architecture i.e. MCN(Media
Convergence Node), BAN (Building Aggregation Node) and BN (Building Node). BN ring is the last
mile ring which connects the series of the BN to the BAN. BN is a point of customer demarcation and
the first point of entry for traffic into MEN. The ring topology provides redundancy to the customer
traffic.
Roles and Responsibilities:
• Prepared Level1 Test case as per standard BN functionality and the inputs received from
internal departments e.g. Network planning, Marketing etc.
• Tested 3400 as a BN Node for Reliance Metro Ethernet network and executing the test cases
as per L1 test Case. Tested MAC Ping, MAC learning, VLAN tagging as per IEEE 802.1q &
system support for 4096 VLANs, VLAN stacking, Load balancing on the aggregated port
based on Source MAC, Destination MAC etc.
• Tested STP, RSTP protocols for loop avoidance, ARP for address resolution. Raising the
issues with Cisco if any and preparing test report at the end of the testing.

manner. Building Aggregation Node (BAN) provides the traffic aggregation point for a number of
building access rings.
Roles and Responsibilities:
• Prepared Level1 Test case as per standard BAN functionality and the inputs received from
internal departments e.g. Network planning, Marketing etc.
• Tested Cisco 7609 & Huawei CX 600D as a BAN Node for Reliance Metro Ethernet network
and executed the test cases as per L1 test Plan.
• Tested OSPF neighbor ship formation, DR &BDR election, exchange of Type1,Type2, Type3
LSAs, concept of areas i.e. Stubby Areas, Not so Stubby Areas and flooding of LSAs in these
areas.
• Raising the issues with respective vendors if any and preparing test report at the end of the
testing.
