Adapting new technologies to sustainably manage a precious resource: Visualising Victoria's groundwater
This project will leverage high capacity broadband networks to visualise Victoria’s groundwater systems, distribute bore data and create web-based tools to construct and display 3D models on-the-fly. It will build upon the ICT infrastructure which underpins UB Spatial http://www.ubspatial.com.au
Project partners include the Australian National University, Department of Sustainability and Environment, Department of Primary Industries, CSIRO, Thiess Services Pty Ltd, Senversa Pty Ltd, Goulburn Murray Water, Southern Rural Water, Natural Resources Canada, VeRSI and the CRC for Spatial Information.
2. Visualising Victoria’s Groundwater project
Use high-speed broadband to:
Distribute groundwater bore data
Visualise groundwater data
Model groundwater systems on-the-fly
A collaboration of 13 partner organisations
An interoperative web-GIS
that federates groundwater
data from disparate sources
to assist water managers
make the correct choices for
the sustainable use of a
precious resource
3. Visualising Victoria’s Groundwater project
Interoperability is based on the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards for
Geography Markup Language (GML), specifically GroundwaterML
http://ngwd-bdnes.cits.rncan.gc.ca/service/api_ngwds/en/gwml.html
4. Future horizons: federated groundwater data bases
through interoperability
Canada’s Groundwater Information Network
http://gw-info.net/
Combines groundwater databases from
9 Provinces into a single web-GIS (~ 2
million bores)
Examples of interoperable databases

7. End-products Depth to watertable
Tools that provide (on-the-fly):
Groundwater bore details
Water-level graphs
Chemistry graphs
Depth to watertable
Cross sections of aquifers
Three-dimensional models of
groundwater systems
Moorabool River aquifers
