SCCoop update
Since 2015, The Streatham
Common Co-operative (SCCoop),
a community run social
enterprise, has managed the
Rookery on behalf of Lambeth
Council. In 2016, we took over
the Paddling Pool, saving it
from closure, in 2017, started
regular conservation work in
the Streatham Common Local
Nature Reserve, and in 2018
started restoration of the
cascade garden.
We run an apprentice scheme
and provide work experience
for local students. Sponsorship
deals bring in additional
income, we support corporate
volunteering, and receive
additional funding from local
trusts. With our partners
Streatham Common Community
Garden and the Friends of
Streatham Common, we have
established regular volunteering
sessions resulting in restoration
of the Rookery gardens and
many conservation projects. We
have partnerships with local
charities, support many events
over the year, and run popular
events like the Rookery Xmas
Fair. We have worked with the
Council and local business to
improve use of assets such as
the Playground, the Inkspot
Brewery, the Rookery Café, and
we support more businesses
through the Rookery Farmer’s
Market.
SCCoop’s contract with the
council ends in October
2019, and a procurement
contract notice is expected
to be published in June, with
a submission date of July.
We’ve been told to expect the
future budget to be around
half the current amount. We
have a business plan based
on what we think is likely to
be in the procurement notice;
through more fundraising and
community support, we believe
we can demonstrate capability
and enough added value to win
the new contract, deliver services
in the Rookery and continue our
wider agenda. However, we must
plan for all possibilities.
We’re hoping to recruit a new
Rookery Garden’s Manager and
are exploring making savings
by combining some services
outside the Rookery with those
now provided by the council for
Streatham Common. We will
still fund the apprentice scheme
and current horticulture and
staffing levels until the end of
the 2019/20 budget period, but
from 2020/21 more fundraising
is needed to keep current
staffing and service levels.
This is an uncertain time for
us, so if you like what you see,
please let us know at

The wondrous beer garden at The Bull is locally
famous, most know about Pratt’s and Payne’s
lovely urban oasis out the back, and The Rabbit
Hole’s huge garden is a paradise for parents.
We’ve been to sample some other lovely locals
with gorgeous gardens – taking one or two for
the team along the way!
the leIGhaM Well
1-3 Wellfield rd, sW16 2Bt
The Leigham Well is a fantastic locals’ pub
tucked away from the bustle of the high rd,
with a lovely walled garden where 8 tables seat
around 40. roofed cabanas with heaters make
this a perfect spot to while away a summer’s day
over a cold beer or a pimm’s or three. There’s
a bottles-only bar outdoors in sunny weather to
save you breaking a sweat to get the next round
in, as well as a sunday barbecue. an outdoor
screen shows sports from terrestrial channels,
and there’s a programme of live music coming
up over the summer, so keep an eye on our Live
music pages for details. The garden is open
2-11pm.
the Mere sCrIBBler
426 streatham high road, sW16 3P
The mere scribbler’s stylish walled garden has
around 14 tables seating around 30 people. It’s
a great place to bring the family as the area is
completely enclosed and child friendly – handy
as the pub is opposite the children’s playground.
Dogs are positively encouraged, and they’ll even
be holding a special Woof Time dog brunch
out there on saturday 15th June They also
have sports screened outside and a quiz every
sunday from 7.30pm. The garden is open until
11pm on weekdays and sundays (midnight on
Fridays and saturdays).

maybe not so secret, The railway has a gor-
geous walled garden with a bar and covered
area which easily holds 60+ people and can be
hired for private parties. If you’re planning a big
celebration, the whole garden is available for
150. There are 15 tables in the covered area
and 13 benches under the sun which seat
another 70.
Great news for parents, the area is secure as
only the top half of the gate is open, so there is
no risk of children running onto the street. The
garden is open every day from 10am (12 on
sunday) until just before closing time (10pm on
weekdays and midnight at weekends). There’s
also a projector screen to show Freeview sports
events too. Dogs are most welcome!

This month we celebrate the
life of Bridged Hall who sadly
passed away last year, leaving
a husband, son, stepson and
grandson.
Bridged was a lifelong
Streathamite and local
campaigner, leading numerous
local initiatives and campaigns.
She started with improving
her street and went on to help
start the Unigate Woods
project. A fire was lit, and she
went on to create Sustainable
Streatham: a highlight being
a bicycle powered film on
Streatham Common.
Bridged was a passionate
environmentalist and nature
lover. She helped to set up
the Streatham Common
Community Garden, as well
as securing funding to install
planters all over Streatham.
In 2010, Tesco and Lambeth
Council agreed to build
a temporary ice rink on
Streatham Common during the
construction of the new Ice and
Leisure Centre. This was a red
flag to Bridged and she formed
“Hands off Our Common” to
stop it happening. Two years
later, another red flag waved
as Lambeth Council sought to
close Streatham Tate Library,
so Bridged formed “Friends
of Streatham Library” and
successfully prevented the
closure.
Bridged loved textiles and had
the idea of creating a quilt of
Streatham High Road which
members of the local WI
worked on in sections. The quilt
was displayed at Streatham
Tate Library when it re-opened
following refurbishment. She
was involved in many other
local initiatives, always with the
aim of ensuring local people
felt heard and included, for this
was her passion and talent.
Following Bridged’s death,
family and friends funded a
memorial bench which has just
been installed on Streatham
Common. As the plaque says,
quite simply, She Loved
Streatham.

The hustle and bustle of Streatham today is far
removed from the peace and tranquillity of the
small country village described in a new book
by local historian, John W Brown, Streatham
Village.
The ancient parish church of St. Leonard's
is the sole survivor from that time and is the
oldest building on the A23 with the tower dating
back to 1350. The book describes some of the
long-lost buildings in the village, from the large
homes of the rich and famous to humble farm
labourers’ cottages – and there was a village
lock-up by Streatham Green, where drunks were
confined overnight!
Streatham and Tooting Bec Commons provided
pasture for livestock and recreation, and in
1771, Tooting Bec Common was the site of
much excitement when King George III came
to Streatham to witness army manoeuvres.
The Streatham Workhouse was on Tooting
Bec Common and the poor of the parish were
housed – there until 1836.
The Rector of Streatham lived in a grand house
called the Rectory, visited several times by Jane
Austen who came to see her friend, the Rector’s
wife, Catherine Bigg-Wither. Another visitor was
his nephew, Robert Southey, the Poet Laureate,
who wrote Goldilocks and the Three Bears to
entertain his uncle's children.
John Brown will be launching Streatham
Village at the Streatham Society meeting at
Woodlawns Centre, 16 Leigham Court Road at
8 pm on Monday 3rd June, when he will give an
illustrated talk on the local history of the area as
part of the Wandsworth Heritage Festival.

Banana Bread
Veolia
Food waste recycling in Lambeth
Last year in Lambeth, Veolia collected approximately
3,000 tonnes of food waste for recycling, equal to
3,750,000 loaves of bread! All of the food waste
is turned into compost, which is used for Lambeth
residents’ gardens, community projects and parks.
It’s always best to reduce the amount of food waste we
produce and then recycle what we can’t avoid.
Here’s a great recipe to use up any bananas
that’ve gone a bit too brown:
You can find more delicious recipes and tips on how to
reduce food waste at lovefoodhatewaste.com
Ingredients
• 125g (4oz) butter
• 120g (4oz) caster sugar
• 3 eggs
• 3 large very ripe bananas, peeled and
mashed
• 225g (7 1/2oz) self-raising flour
• 1/2 tsp baking powder
• 2 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1 tsp mixed spice
• 100g (3 1/2oz) sultanas or dried apricots,
chopped into little pieces
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1/2 tsp salt
Method
1. Preheat oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C.
2. Grease and line a 1kg (2lb) loaf tin.
3. With an electric whisk, beat the butter and
sugar until pale, light and fluffy.
4. Beat in the eggs one by one until well
combined. Then add in the remaining
ingredients. Fold everything together until evenly
mixed.
5. Pour the mixture into the prepared loaf
tin and bake in the preheated oven for 50-
60 minutes, until golden brown. A skewer
inserted into the centre should come out
clean. If the top is darkening too quickly,
cover it with foil.
6. Once done, remove from the oven and
leave to cool in its tin for 10 minutes, then
turn out onto a wire rack.
7. Cut into thick slices and serve with
butter.

once a curiosity hidden behind a fence on
Tooting Common, the Woodfield Pavilion is being
re-opened and returned to public use.
at the first opening in 1933, alderman samuel
Cresswell announced that the pavilion and
grounds were to be ‘preserved for all time for
displays, games, and sports. For years they
were a hub of activity before the pavilion fell into
disrepair as Wandsworth could not afford the
upkeep. By 1986 the ground had become an
unmarked grass sward and was leased to the
Waldorf school.
after a decade-long effort by residents,
the pavilion has been refurbished and
modernised and you are invited to
join us to celebrate its’ rebirth at
the Woodfield Recreation Ground
off abbotswood rd on Sunday
30th june. From noon until 5pm
there will be a fair with stalls, music,
games, workshops, food and drink
with a formal opening at 2pm. The
renovations were made possible by The national
Lottery heritage Fund, Tooting Common
heritage project, Veolia, and the
Western riverside environmental
Fund.
We hope to make The Woodfield
project a space to gather, teach,
learn, and play with community-
building, wellbeing, and ecology
central to future projects for people
of all ages. We need help to flesh out the
future of our project.
The trustees and members of The Woodfield
project have held fairs, sponsored walk, built
insect hotels, and run horticultural sessions. We
have thought long about the design of a building
for community use: about toilets, a multi-
purpose space, a changing room, a meeting
room for hire and a kitchen. But we need help to
flesh out the future of our project.
The Woodfield Project is returning the Pavilion
to community use. If you are interested in
volunteering or collaborating with us, please get
in touch via thewoodfieldproject@gmail.com.
See you on 30th June!
