Letter from the Minister
Dear Friends,
November, and the dark nights and dampness of
autumn are here. Curtains are drawn, fires are
on, and we snuggle happily in our comfort.
Advent will soon be upon us – are we ready? Advent is a time when
we prepare for the coming of Jesus. We look to the past as we
celebrate the birth stories found in Matthew and Luke; we
consider the present; and we look to the future as we remind
ourselves to watch for all the times that Jesus comes to us in our
everyday lives. The “advent” or arrival of Jesus is what the four
weeks leading up to Christmas are all about.
In Matthew 11, when John the Baptist was in prison, he sent his
disciples to Jesus with the following question, “Are you the One
who is to come or should we look for another?” Instead of saying
“yes” or “no” Jesus turns the question back upon John’s disciples
and ultimately, upon us. Jesus says, “Go and tell John what you
hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the deaf hear, the
dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.”
Jesus suggests here that the Realm of God is the kind of place
where lives are changed. And he offers some concrete examples
for us to recognize the changes in our midst. As I look at Jesus’
examples I am reminded of the work of the church, of our vision
and mission statements (to be found within this magazine!) and the
promises we have made to be God’s people in this place.
As Advent approaches, let us all be prepared to spread the Good
News of Jesus, invite others to our church, encourage others to
be involved, to take part in outreach activities, and make Advent a
wonderful time for us all.
May God bless us richly this Advent.

Mrs. Margaret Smith is a Methodist Lay Preacher. She has led
services at HFC on a number of occasions. This time, she will be

Dr. Clive Timehin is a local preacher who comes from Bromley
Methodist Church. He is a member of the Methodist Council
Medical Committee. He has conducted Sunday worship at HFC
on previous occasions.

Glynis Hill is the wife of the Rev. Paul Hill. The Hill family is involved
with the Haiti Hospital Appeal.

Jim Holman is a Methodist preacher. He has lead services at
HFC in the past.

related pains in October. Flora has recovered well, but needs to take

The next Elders’ meeting will be on Tuesday 5th November at 8.00 pm
in the small hall.

The Contact Group will meet at 8.00pm on Monday the 4th of
November at Jean Ritchie’s home, 25 Burford Road, Bickley. We will NOT
be meeting in December.

After the Sunday evening services, the flowers are distributed to
members and friends, bringing joy to the recipients.

Hayes Mothers’ & Toddlers’ Club
We welcome all babies and children under school age, accompanied
by their parents, grandparents or carers, to our club on Friday
afternoons between 2 and 4pm during term time. The fee is £1 per
family – tea, squash and biscuits are provided.
This is a time when adults can meet up, while the children in their care
are busy playing with toys and activities in the company of other
children.
There is no meeting on November 1st during the half term break.
Our CHRISTMAS PARTY and last meeting for this term is on December
6th at 2.15 pm.
Tickets priced £2.50 per child will be on sale from November 22nd.

The choir is curently preparing for the Candles by Candlelight service
which takes place on the evening of Sunday, 15th of December.
Martin Nunn , the choirmaster, is looking for volunteers to join the choir.

Women’s Contact Coffee Morning
There will not be a coffee morning in November because
the Christmas Fair falls on the day we would have held it.
We will be holding the next coffee morning in the Small
Hall from 10.00am to 12.00 on the 14th of December, 2013.
We are continuing to raise monies to contribute to disaster
relief funds in different parts of the world.
We hope to see you at the Coffee Mornings, and why not bring a
friend?
Please note that the monies raised from the coffee mornings are
separate from those raised through the refreshments trolley after
Sunday morning services.

The Fairtrade Sunday Stall
We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th
Sunday of each month.
In November the stall will be held on the 10th will be very limited in
scope as we will have had a stall at the Christmas Fair on Saturday
the 9th. There will be a normal stall on the 24th.
We are placing a bumper order for the Christmas Fair. This year, there
are beautiful new Christmas card designs, and some great seasonal
foods in the catalogue. A selection of these have been included in
the order, and will be on the stall.
Please continue to support your fair trade stall. Thank you.

Money, money money!
I am pleased to say that I was able to send £140 for McMillan
charity’s “Big Coffee Morning” appeal. That amount was raised
from Contact Saturday coffee mornings and Sunday morning
coffee. Also, from Sunday morning coffee donations, £8.75 has
gone to the Leprosy Mission and £15.30 to the Bible Society.
Thank you to everybody who supports our giving by eating cake
and drinking tea and coffee. Long may you continue to do so!

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2013
This year the Church has chosen the Kent Association for the Blind as
the charity for our Christmas Tree Festival.
KAB supports sight impaired people to live independent lives.
The charity feels that anyone who has a sight impairment should be
able to live a fulfilled, healthy and safe life, exercise selfdetermination and make informed choices, and achieve their own
personal goals. The charity makes this a reality by providing
comprehensive support services to people of any age and at any
stage of the sight-loss journey. KAB works in Bromley, Bexley, Kent,
and Medway.

KAB was the website of the month the April 2013 edition of Catalyst.
Working with KAB
I recently met with Karen Osborne, the chief executive of the Kent
Association for the Blind, and I asked Chris and Gill Wood to come
with me.
We asked for some of the proceeds of our festival to go towards the
funding of a computer expert who trains the blind to use a computer
and also a telephone.
Gill is currently being taught to use a special type of computer for the
blind, but regrettably there is not enough money to fund the trainer,
Mike Peak, who teaches a number of blind people in this area for the
long term.
Possibly we also hope to fund a weekend break for some blind friends
for a long weekend at the Torch Trust in Sussex. This would be in
conjunction with the Hayes Community Bus. Torch Trust helps newly
blind folk and their carers come to terms with their situation and to
offer help and advice.

Justice and Peace group
We are reviving the Justice and Peace group and
would like to invite you to join us.
We’ll be exploring ways, as a church, that we can
support poor people in the world. You don’t have
to be an expert to join the group, just willing to do
your bit to help.

Ignatian spirituality group
Alison and I will be starting an Ignatian spirituality
group in the New Year.
Ignatian spirituality aims to help us connect our faith
with our everyday life.
We will be meeting from 8 to 10 pm on the second
and fourth Thursdays in the month – venue to be
confirmed.
To provide a sample of what the group will be doing,
we’re planning to holding a quiet morning in the
church from 10.30 to 12 one Saturday in November.

Bible Society Update
-------------The civil unrest in Egypt has resulted in the burning and
total destruction of two bookshops in Southern Egypt,
as well as churches being the target of violence
I have sent a donation of £20, collected from the
Sunday Coffee Morning collections to help rebuild
the bookshops.
Please pray for the protection of Christian
communities, may they be witness to God’s love,
grace and forgiveness in their local areas.

“The Bible” telling the story from Genesis to
Revelation, and to be broadcast on Channel 5
later this year.
It has already been a hit in America.

The Normandy Veterans’ Association
(Wording taken from the Norwich Branch website.)
The object of NormandyVeterans.org.uk is to obtain
and provide information of events which occur over
and around the period leading up to the 70th
anniversary of the Battle of Normandy, for those
Normandy Veterans, friends, families and supporters
who are unable to obtain the information for themselves.
Norwich and District was the third national branch .... to be formed
and has been going since 1981. We are part of the National
Association that was the idea of Arthur Foldman.
Since its formation we have enjoyed the camaraderie and support of
numerous people and organisations.
However, in this modern age of technology, we are eager to
encourage the younger generation to learn about the efforts given
by those involved with the Normandy campaign. Many children
have grandparents who were involved and we are keen to express
“that there is no glory in war”. Our Schools initiative is an example of
our efforts in this.

Normandy Veterans Association Planned Pilgrimage
The Normandy Veterans Association (South Eastern Branch) is trying to
raise funds to help Veterans make their last pilgrimage to Normandy
in 2014 to pay respect to the comrades they left behind on the
battlefields. There are currently (as at Sept 2012) four Veterans living
in Bromley who would like to attend this event and the Association is
raising funds to enable them to relive some of the events that took
place and they were part of.

Our Mission Statement
We will Worship together through Jesus Christ by:
communal viable teaching in Spirit led Sunday Worship, throwing new light
on the nature of God; encouraging each other and others in prayer; by
looking for new ways to offer worship opportunities to those around.
We will Explain the Gospel through:
our Sunday teaching and sermon and the sharing of prayers, hymns and
songs. We will hold House groups to help each other to understand the
Gospel teachings and also live our understanding of the Gospel through
our actions and our lives
We will Love by:
showing our love of God through practical action and care; talking and
sharing with each other and others, offering time and understanding to
those around us.
We will Care for our neighbours by:
acknowledging who our neighbours are and accepting people into the
fellowship; by keeping in touch with our local community and supporting
local charities.
We will Open the doors to the community through:
ensuring the building is suitable for use by all, including the disabled, and
ensuring that all are warmly welcomed; offering alternative worship
opportunities (Wednesday evening service, Compassionate Friends);
updating for extended use the Youth Site in Mounthurst Road and using the
church building for Youth and Children’s work, (Uniformed Organisations,
Nursery, Mother & toddlers); working with the elderly (Women’s Fellowship,
Holiday from Home); sharing our activities (coffee mornings, fairs, Tree
Festival, Concerts, outreach opportunities [Royal wedding, Olympic
Games]); opening the building to the community through outside ‘lets’
(Cocaine Anonymous, Slimming World, etc.); extending the use of the
building for conferences.
We will Minister according to our gifts by:
recognising and encouraging gifts within and without the congregation
and allowing them to be used to the greater glory of God.
We will Encourage discipleship in:
others outside the church by openly and honestly engaging in conversation
with those who seek to know more about God and the Christian faith and
in those within the church through friendship and house groups.
Our Current Mission Priorities: Children’s Work; Church Growth; Pastoral Care.

Final Thought
We see signs of summer’s passing in golden leaves,
shortening days, misty mornings, autumn glow.
We sense its passing in rain that dampens,
winds that chill, Harvest’s bounty placed on show.
Creator, God of both green shoot and hoar frost,
sunrise and sunset,
we bring thanks
for seeds that have grown,
harvests gathered,
storehouses filled,
mouths fed.
And, as your good earth rests
through winter’s cold embrace,
we look forward to its re-awakening
when kissed by spring’s first touch.
