"Of course we do."
Jacob: "Good, I'll take two packages."
With that, Jacob turns to Elspeth and says, "Just in case one of us
kicks off during the honeymoon."
I've Learned
I've learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is
be someone who can be loved; the rest is up to them.
I've learned that no matter how much I care, some people just don't
care back.
I've learned that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to
destroy it.
I've learned that it's not what you have in your life but who you have

3. Letter from the Minister
Dear Friends
What a wonderful summer we have had!
Although the weather has had its ups and downs,
the Olympics far surpassed our expectations!
And now the Paralympics begin.
If those who entered the Olympics worked hard, then our
Paralympians will have overcome far more and worked far harder;
and the team of people backing them will be far more specialised.
There is a wonderful Spirit for Life that exists in us all, that makes
us all part of God’s world; the Spirit that stops us from giving up
and being defeated by our difficulties, and instead fighting against
them.
The Olympics gave us Team GB, we have Team HFC!
The Spirit that gives life and strength in so many ways to the
Paralympians gives life and strength to us too.
While we face difficulties we must gain strength from the Spirit
that gives us the joy of celebrating Baptisms, while we seek to find
new ways of reaching out to our community we must thank God’s
Spirit for providing new ideas and ways of serving. Team HFC has
much to do, and we need to be getting on and doing it!
As we work towards new ways of serving, we need to be praying for
each other and supporting new initiatives as they come forward.
The Spirit of God helps us all to be more than we think we can be…
let us all work towards Team HFC becoming Spirit filled and excited
by God’s plans.
Sue

Our Greatest Achievement
We must expect posterity
to view with some asperity
the marvels and the wonders
we're passing on to it;
but it should change its attitude
to one of heartfelt gratitude
when thinking of the blunders
we didn't quite commit. By Piet Hein

T hank you to everyone for your generous cheque which I received
when I retired as Church Secretary.
Over the years I enjoyed working with 4 Interim Moderators and 3
Ministers and with all of you the members of the church.
I have bought a new garden shed as the old one had seen better
days. I have also bought a new garden clock and patio table and 6
chairs as we did not have any garden furniture.
Taking time to sit in the garden will be even nicer with all my garden
tools neatly stored and a comfortable chair to
relax in and watch time tick by.
Yours sincerely
Alistair.

8. Genealogist’s Prayer
Genealogy is my pastime - I shall not stray
It maketh me to lie down and examine half buried tombstones
It leadeth me into still court houses
It restoreth my ancestral knowledge
It leadeth me into the paths of census records
And ships passenger lists
For my name sake
Yet though I wade through the shadows
Of research libraries and microfilm readers
I shall fear no discouragement
For the strong urge is with me
For the curiosity and motivation they comfort me
It demandeth preparation of storage space
For the acquisition of countless documents
It anointeth my head with burning midnight oil
My family group sheet runneth over
Surely birth, marriages and deaths
Shall follow me all the days of my life
And I shall dwell in the house of a family tree seeker forever
Amen

A warning about a bogus inspector checking roof work.
L B of Bromley Trading Standards have received information about an
individual, RICHARD GREEN (aka Richard Green Larry) cold calling
and claiming to be from Trading Standards.
He uses the company name AQUASHIELD and says that he is
‘investigating’ the company who had carried out roofing work to the
property. He may be working with two others posing as builders.
Green is 40 to 50 yrs (possibly 60) – medium build – short – shaved
head – tanned – wearing a black plastic/leather jacket. He wears an
ID card on a lanyard around his neck possibly with a blue edge.
L B Croydon has reported that two victims in their area have lost £800
and £2,000 respectively to this individual. There was a previous
incident in Havering and a two incidents have been reported
recently in Surrey .

9. Holiday From Home 2012
I believe it correct to say it was a fun week with something appealing
to everyone in the programmes.
Each day started with tea/coffee and warm welcome
and afternoon refreshment was on offer for those who
wanted further sustenance later in the day.
Interesting quizzes on the Monday morning, for a change
yielded a high number of correct answers with team ‘The
4 stooges’ winning. Following a very satisfying lunch we were treated
to a demonstration of International Dance. The invitation to join in
was taken up by some and the more nimble showed what they
could do.
Though not as adept as the ladies the men took part in
the flower arranging one morning and their handiwork
no doubt graced a table at home for a while.
It is always great to hear excellent
musicians and we were treated to an
afternoon of different music on the piano,
recorders and guitar as well as some
poetry and prose and song by a group
called ‘The Troubadours’ which came from Bromley.
Wednesday saw us leaving the church on yet another sunny day and
making our way to Eltham Palace, indeed a very palatial place with
lovely gardens which has a chequered history stretching back many
7
10. years to Henry 8th, the Courtauld family, with part of the
RAF services there and now cared for by English Heritage
The less mobile had the benefit of
wheelchairs and an army of pushers to
ferry them around. Lunch on the lawn was
great and a little later that afternoon we
met up again at a nearby café for a lovely
cream tea. The bathroom scales groaned
that evening when I got home.
Glass painting started the fourth day using flower
vases, candle holders and the like with each one
taking part showing their artistic
prowess with some creating their
own designs. Great fun. Roland on
piano accompanied by Dave on
the accordion led the afternoon ‘sing-a-long’ with
songs from Bill.
The week seemed to fly by and on the final day in the
morning we had two interesting talks, the first on keeping
physically and mentally fit. A very good speaker and very
easy to follow. The second speaker spoke to
us about Rogue Traders and Scams that
were prevalent at the current time giving
advice of what to do and not to do.
After the final lunch of the week provided by the local
Fish and Chip shop we relaxed with Bingo.
In conclusion it must be said the week heard plenty of
laughter and good humour prevailed with a lot of
interaction with people never met before. There were a
goodly number of regulars attending each day added to
by others from time to time. It must be recorded that the planning
and set up of the week and its programmes obviously showed great
thought and organisation and as one of those benefiting it was
greatly appreciated. Sue I believe had more than one finger in the
pie here! The army of helpers drawn from here, there and it seemed
everywhere greatly enhanced all that was going on. The meals were
superb. Those responsible for transport deserve special thanks in
particular Colin and Alan who drove the minibus and their escorts as
well as those bringing others in their cars.
Will there be another ‘Holiday from Home’ next year? “Hope so” were
the words uttered by many as they left.

11. Those Golden Years
Jacob, age 92, and Elspeth age 89, living in Devon, are all excited
about their decision to get married.
They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and on the way they
pass a chemist. Jacob suggests they go in.
Jacob addresses the man behind the counter: "Are you the
owner?"
The pharmacist answers, "Yes."
Jacob: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart
medication?"
Pharmacist: "Of course we do."
Jacob: "How about medicine for circulation?"
Pharmacist: "All kinds”
Jacob: "Medicine for rheumatism?"
Pharmacist: "Definitely."
Jacob: "How about suppositories?"
Pharmacist: "You bet!"
Jacob: "Medicine for memory problems, arthritis, and Alzheimer's?"
Pharmacist: "Yes, a large variety. The works."
Jacob: "What about vitamins, sleeping pills, Geritol, antidotes for
Parkinson's disease?"
Pharmacist: "Absolutely...”
Jacob: "Everything for heartburn and indigestion?"
Pharmacist: "We sure do."
Jacob: "You sell wheelchairs, zimmer frames and canes?"
Pharmacist: "All speeds and sizes."
Jacob: "Adult incontinence pants?"
Pharmacist: "Sure."
Jacob: "We'd like to use this store for our wedding gift registry."

Talent Exhibition
As we celebrate our Church 75th Anniversary, let us
give thanks for our many God-given talents.
On Saturday, 13th October we are having a special
exhibition. Anything from composing, to knitting, art,
poetry to woodwork.
You have plenty of time to create something
wonderful, or you can dig out the lace or oil painting
that you made years ago and you'd like it to see the
light of day again.
Please ask for a letter about this event and as you
create, pop more money in to your little green box
and return it when full. Take another which can also
be filled.
Thank you

15. The Directors Lunch Club
with a special guest
Our table was booked for the 31st of July at The King’s Head in
Shoreham.
Luckily, we had a view of the television which was showing live action
from the Olympics - the show jumping. However, exciting as the
event was, we had a more tangible reminder of the Olympics.
Brenda Cordingley was with us as the guest of honour
along with the Olympic torch which she had carried
in the Hythe stage of the torch relay.
Brenda told us about the day and how well the relay
runners were looked after by the organisers.
In Brenda’s words, “It was a wonderful day and I'm
sure will be well publicised!! I had loads of
supporters as all my
family were there, the
Hayes Minibus from
the church, friends from the Horticultural
Society and other friends.”
Brenda told us that when she visits
schools and groups to talk about the
relay, people can relate more closely to
the Olympic ethos when they can see
and touch the torch. This is, in reality a
part of the Olympic legacy - to
encourage and inspire people to a
lead better lives.
Oh, by the way, the lunch was delicious
and filling!

16. Is your church a Fairtrade church?
By Ricarda Witcombe (From Sunday link - 5th August 2012)
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local
sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the
developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices
(which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade
addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally
discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them
to improve their position and have more control over their lives.
Churches have a significant role to play in promoting Fairtrade and
yours can start by deciding to be a Fairtrade church. You need to
agree to three goals:
• Use Fairtrade tea and coffee after services and in all meetings for
which you have responsibility.
• Move forward on using other Fairtrade products such as sugar,
biscuits and fruit.
• Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and during the year
through events, worship and other activities whenever possible.
Women’s Contact Coffee Morning 10.00 am - 12.00
Our next coffee mornings will be on the 8th of September.
We are continuing to raise monies to contribute to disaster
relief funds in different parts of the world.
We hope to see you there, and why not bring a friend.

The Fairtrade Sunday Stall
We will be holding a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd
and 4th Sunday of each month. So, in September the stall will be held
on the 9th and 23rd.
The message is please buy Fairtrade; see the article above.
Please continue to support your fair trade stall. Thank you.
Richard and Barbara.

May run in cities with a brisker force,
But nowhere with a current so serene,

17. Unwanted telephone sales calls
The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official
central opt out register on which you can record your preference not
to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirement
that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and
political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the
TPS unless they have your consent to do so.
Organisations with which you have an ongoing relationship, for
example those who regard you as a customer, (or in the case of
charities - a donor) may well gather your consent during the early
stages of your relationship with them and will therefore be entitled to
call you even if your number is registered on TPS, unless you have
previously told them specifically that you object to them calling you
for marketing purposes.
The TPS can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers,
however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt of
marketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. If you wish to stop
receiving SMS marketing messages, please send an 'opt-out' request
to the company involved.
As TPS registration only prevents marketing calls, organisations will still
be able to call you for the purposes of genuine market research.

18. Website of the Month
Hayes
A History of a Kentish Village
Local historians, Jean Wilson and the late Trevor Woodman, have each
spent over 30 years researching the local area, and now their two volume
history has just been published. The first volume covers the time from the
Stone Age to 1914, and the second from 1914 to modern times.
The volumes reveal the changes in Hayes from the time when woolly
mammoths roamed the land ,to the present day. It is a story of rich and
poor, of famous and infamous. It shows the resilience of the community
as it responded to the challenges of wars, poverty and plague, the
coming of the railway, and the housing developments of the 1930s.
The two volume set costs £25 - payment by cash or cheque made
payable to J. M. Wilson. They are available from 8, Redgate Drive, Hayes,
Kent , BR2 7BT, or from Elizabeth Woodman at 19, Hayes Hill Road, Hayes,
Kent BR2 7HH (telephone 020 8462 1003). Please supply your contact
details if free delivery within Hayes is required.

During July, Ria, an Avaaz member in the UK, sent these words:
"I am 65 years old and have terminal cancer and not long to live.
65,246 messages of hope were sent to Ria by 8th August.
8th Aug there were 15,384,453 members, and counting.
I can do very little practically because of this. The state of the world
and the amount of violence and injustice breaks my heart. Through
your organisation even I can make a difference and try to help make
this world a better place for others before I leave it. This is a positive
and peaceful action which gives me great comfort. I am no longer
helpless and powerless, I can vote, I have power to change things
even now.
Thank you for giving me this priceless opportunity at such a time as this.
Peace and democracy in Syria would be such a fantastic 'going
away present'. However, this was really just to say say thank you for
giving so many people who care a voice which is now heard world
wide. 15,000,000! What a voice to be reckoned with. Thanks to you all."
When Avaaz launched five years ago we were told it would be impossible
to build a global community based on shared values across borders
because we are so different. The connections we share across age,
nationality, race, and religion are immeasurably more powerful than
anything that could divide us. And week after week we unite to change
our world, and we win.

19. 60 years of the NHS
Lady rings her local hospital and this conversation follows:
Lady - Hello I'd like some information on a patient, Mrs Tiptree. She was
admitted last week with chest pains and I just want to know if
her condition has deteriorated, stabilised or improved.
Hospital - Do you know which ward she is in?
Lady - Yes, ward P, room 2B.
Hospital - I'll just put you through to the nurse station.
Nurse - Hello ward P, how can I help?
Lady - I would just like some information on a patient, Mrs Tiptree, I was
wondering if her condition had deteriorated, stabilised or
improved?
Nurse - I'll just check her notes. I'm pleased to say that Mrs Tiptree's
conditioned has improved. She has regained her appetite, her
temperature has steadied and after some routine checks
tonight, she should be well enough to go home tomorrow.
Lady - Oh that's wonderful news, I'm so happy, thank you ever so
much!
Nurse - You seem very relieved, are you a close friend or relative?
Lady - No, I'm Mrs Tiptree in room 2b. Nobody tells you anything at all
in here.
Bible Society Update
A letter from the Bible Society which highlights the plight of Syrian
refugees fleeing into other countries, particularly Jordan, spurred me
into action. With gifts from the Saturday and Sunday coffee mornings
and the Contact Group I sent a cheque for £70 in July.
Since the “Arab Spring”, the underground church in North Africa and
the Middle East is growing and has many new opportunities to share
God’s Word. The projects planned are more translation, scripture
distribution through bookshops and refugee camps, creating safe
places where groups can read and discuss God’s Word, providing
affordable scriptures, and practical work where needed.
There is a great spiritual hunger for God’s Word, but much fear and
prejudice to overcome.
Thank you for supporting this vital work. Do pray for our brothers and
sisters in Christ in these areas.

24. Final Thought
The Knots Prayer
Dear God,
Please untie the knots in my mind,
my heart and my life.
Remove the have nots,
the can nots, and the do nots
that I have in my mind.
Erase the will nots,
may nots,
might nots that may find
a home in my heart.
Release me from the could nots,
would nots and
should nots that obstruct my life.
And most of all,
Dear God,
I ask that you remove from my mind,
my heart and my life all of the “am nots”
that I have allowed to hold me back,
especially the thought that
I am not good enough.
Amen
