CORE MODULES – Term 1
Digital Business and Workplace Technologies
Develop a foundation to the major themes of the course. Examine the importance of information systems
and digital media in supporting work in modern organisations, and review the role of technology. Build on
these core concepts to discuss major trends and developments such as new technologies, assessing the
value of technology and information systems security and risk.
Assessment consists of a three-hour examination worth 70% of the final mark and a group presentation
worth 30% of the final mark.
Knowledge Work and Innovation
Study several theoretical and practical frameworks that integrate concepts of IT, innovation, and strategic
management. Explore the introduction, integration, and effects of new technologies and systems within a
firm. Consider technological innovation from two angles: efficiency improvement within a business, and
product or service innovation with the consumer in mind.
Assessment consists of a 3,500 word essay (equivalent to 80%) and a group presentation (equivalent to
20%).
Organisational Analysis
Learn how organisational structures and processes affect employees’ orientation to work, technology, and
management. Explore key concepts in organisational analysis.
Topics covered include:
Organisational structure, institutions and environment, power and control, and corporate culture.
Assessment consists of a group presentation (equivalent to 30%), an assessed essay (equivalent to 50%),
and a short assessed essay (equivalent to 20%).
Enterprise Systems Development
Explore managerial issues and factors associated with the development of complex, tightly-coupled
software packages. Gain hands-on experience in using SAP to configure a virtual enterprise.
Consider the development and implementation of Information Systems in organisations focusing on
management issues rather than technical. Study the role of Enterprise Resource Planning systems, and gain
hands-on experience with a current ERP package while developing your Project Management skills.
Topics covered include:
The nature of enterprise information systems (ERP systems); redesign/transformation of business processes
and organisational integration; development of ERP systems (i.e. integrated enterprise information
systems).
Assessment consists of a group assignment worth 40% of the final mark and a 3,000 word essay worth 60%
of the final mark.

Global Sourcing & Innovation
Explore issues relating to sourcing for innovation in IT and business services in a global context. Examine
both client and vendor practices, and gain an understanding of how value can be created and delivered.
Engage in an end-to-end real-life sourcing exercise. Develop a broad perspective of the challenges and
benefits of outsourcing, offshoring and in-shoring for services in different organisational contexts.
Topics covered include:
The transition and planning issues in IT and Business Process Outsourcing and Offshoring; Apply key
frameworks and methodologies in practice implementation of outsourcing arrangements in real-life
situations.
Assessment consists of a group presentation worth 30% of the final mark and a 3,000 word assignment
worth 70%.
Digital Business Strategy and Social Media
Consider figital innovation and its implications for strategising in the digital age. Gain the opportunity to
conduct design inquiry to generate new digital innovations, and develop a broad perspective on the
creation and implementation of effective social media strategies.
Assessment consists of group work worth 20% of the final mark and a 3,000 word essay worth 80% of the
final mark.
Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence
Consdier decision-making via interactive analysis of enterprise data, and gain fundamental knowledge
about the adoption of data warehousing technologies to build business intelligence capacity. Get hands-on
experience in the design and use of the SAP data warehousing system and an online analytical processing
(OLAP) software package.
Assessment consists of an individual assessment (3,000 words) worth 75% of the final mark and a group
project/presentation (1,000 words) worth 25% of the final mark.
Technological Innovation and Change
Explore how technological innovations play a major role in establishing, maintaining, and eroding
competitive advantages across the global economy. Consider how to harness and integrate technological
innovations into competition strategy at the firm and industry level.
Assessment consists of a group presentation worth 20% of the final mark and an assessment worth 80% of
the final mark.
Business Systems Integration and Consultancy
Gain insight into Business Systems Integration Strategy (BSISs) development in contemporary organisations.
With the help of external companies, explore case-study material and get practical guidance on the
concepts, tools, and practices to develop high level BSIS.
Topics covered include:
Main theories of Systems Integration (SI) Strategy (SIS); Systems Integration Management; Analyse real
business issues to propose potential business solutions as they relate to SIS design.
Assessment consists of group worth (equivalent to 40% of the final mark) and a 2,500 word essay worth
60% of the final mark.
CORE MODULES – Term 3
Project & Dissertation
The dissertation is designed to provide you with an opportunity to explore an area of special interest
demonstrating knowledge and practising the skills gained on the taught modules of the course.
Assessment will be by means of a 1,000 word Research Proposa, a 12,000 word Dissertation, and where
appropriate a 5,000 word Management Report for external projects.
