INTRODUCTION
Covid-19 or coronavirus disease-2019 is caused by SARS-CoV-2,
a newly emergent coronavirus that was first recognised in Wuhan,
China in December 2019. Coronavirus is linked to SARS (Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome) virus and belongs to a large group of positive
stranded RNA virus (+ssRNA).
Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 was
declared as a global pandemic by World Health Organisation (WHO)
on 30th January 2020, the first day India had reported its first
confirmed case of Covid-19. The WHO directed all countries to
prepare for containment, including active surveillance, early
detection, isolation and case management, contact tracing and
prevention of onward spread of infection.
Common symptoms of Covid-19 include fever, cough, fatigue,
shortness of breath and loss of smell and taste. Some people develop
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), multi-organ failure,
septic shock and blood clots.
The incubation period ranges from 2-14 days with an average
of 5 days. The mode of transmission can occur through direct,
indirect or close contact with infected people through secretions
such as saliva, respiratory secretions while sneezing or coughing and
through fomites.
In India, the first case of covid-19 was reported on 30th January
in Kerala. India currently has the largest number of confirmed cases
in Asia. A Covid-19 national lockdown was enforced from 24th March
2020 which was gradually unlocked in 6 phases till November 2020.
The first case of Covid-19 in the Indian state of Assam was
reported on 31st March 2020. The districts like Kamrup (M), Nagaon,
Dibrugarh were worst affected.
Globally, as of 19th November 2021, there has been
255,324,963 confirmed cases of Covid-19 including 5,127,696 deaths
reported to WHO. India, as of 21st November 2021 reported
34,044,751 confirmed cases of Covid-19 including 465,662 deaths as
per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
And the Indian state of Assam, as of 21st November 2021 reported
580657 confirmed cases, including 5502 deaths, with the district of
Assam- Kamrup (Metro) where Guwahati city is situated reported
20663 confirmed cases of Covid-19.
The corona virus has infected millons of people all over the world ,in
addition to that millons of people have lost their lives . It is a very
contagious and virulent virus, therefore it is very essential for
acquiring immunity against the COVID19 virus. Vaccine are the most
important public health measures and most effective strategy For
control the COVID 19 pandemic . Ever since the outbreak Researcher
all over the world have been working constantly to develop vaccines
that will work effectively against the virus. While the vaccines are
been develop at a fastpace , they also require rigorous testings.
clinical trials were done to ensure they meet the benchmark for the
safety and efficiency of international stantards.
After successful clinical trial and W.H.O approval of Covid 19
vaccine . Indian government have launched the largest vaccination
drive in the world ,Government are providing free of cost Covid 19
vaccine .
Two of the widely used Covid 19 vaccine in india are
Covishield and Covaxin which was approved for administration in
adult population (18+).Covishield is a recombinant chimpanzee
adenovirus vector vaccine developed by Astrazeneca and Covaxin is
whole viron inactived vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech. Recently
government approved vaccine for age group between 15-18years
and 3rd dose Covid vaccines for Health workers and senior citizen
(60+).Government has also approved emergency administration of
Sputnik V, Zydus Cadilla, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson.
Till date government of India has successfully
administered more than 1.5 billion Covid 19 vaccines.
In Assam government has successfully administered 3
crore vaccine dose as of 1st January2022.
While the availability and distribution of the vaccines
remains a challenge, even in places where vaccines are made
available, there is a great controversy about Covid 19 vaccine among
the general population. A proportion of the people are still hesitating
to take Covid 19 vaccine.
Thus, this study is being conducted with the objective to
assess the present state of knowledge,attitude,practices and also to
know the expectation and preferences regarding the Covid 19
vaccination among the people residing in Guwahati city because it is
crucial for government and policy makers to address all barrier
regarding vaccine distribution, administration and safety
