Welcome to the Harnham annual salary guide for 2015 - 2016,
and our latest look back over a year in data and analytics.
It gives us great pleasure to
release our very first European
salary guide!
Our European team is the newest
within Harnham and has grown
from strength to strength over
the past 18 months.
With specialist bilingual teams
focusing on the major European
countries we have benefited
greatly from our position as a
truely global specialist in Data
and Analytics.
One thing that has become
apparent whilst putting together
this guide is how data and
analytics is becoming recognised
as one the most in demand
skillsets in mainland Europe.
European-based firms are sitting
up taking notice of the global
data market and are investing
heavily into these areas.
As such, competition for skilled
resources is high.
Candidates are also a lot more
open to intercountry and cross-
border relocation and many
companies are incentivising many

Salaries in Gibraltar and Malta are on a par
with like-for-like roles in the UK. There is
a lot of competition for the best talent in
these locations which pushes up salaries.
	Data and Analytics in continental Europe
isn’t as mature a discipline as it is in the UK
or the USA.
	German salaries are higher in Big Data
and Data Science than the rest of Europe.
	Apache Spark is replacing Hadoop as the
most popular tool in the Big Data industry.
	Data science roles and responsibilities are
very diverse and the skills required for them
vary considerably.
	Analytics candidates in Norway can
expect to be paid almost 20% more
than those in Sweden.

What is interesting about this is that needs vary depending on
the geographical location of the company. Berlin, for example, is
home to a vast amount of start-ups, while global players seem to
dominate in Munich.
Regardless of what size the company is and what
sector they operate in, digital transformation has not passed
unnoticed and there is a constant need for data experts in order to
keep a competitive edge through data-driven insights.
We have seen an increase in overall salaries on last year at all
levels, and as demand increases for specialist skills and niche tools,
this has contributed to the increase in salaries and packages on

trends is of great importance for Engineers.”

This brings along new “hot topics” in the data and technology world. Open
source projects such as Spark, Mesos, and Storm are very popular, and
candidates who can demonstrate hands-on commercial experience with
these tools are now in very high demand.
It is also important to note that German salaries
in Big Data are the highest in Europe.
Big Data remains a buzzword in the German Market. As the volume,
velocity, and variety of data increases, platforms and programs adapt in
order to become faster, more in depth, and more effective.

“There has recently been a decrease in interest
in SAS, while R is on the rise due to its improved
functionality and cost.”

We believe that the R job growth trend will continue mainly due to the fact
that the tool is free and relatively easy to use in conjunction with SAS and
many other tools. R is adding more functions each year, and last year added
more functionality than SAS has in total.
Similar to other markets, there are declining numbers of candidates using
SAS. In addition, some Marketing Insights roles are combining Data Science
skillsets, though there is still demand for the more traditional marketing
analyst in Germany.
Companies in Germany are currently showing a great interest in
candidates with skillsets combining tools like R, SQL, and other
visualisation tools.

popular tool in Germany, but Analysts are
experimenting with packages such as R.”

Tag management systems, which allow teams to process customised and
dynamic ad-hoc analysis without losing time in the backend, are a great
example for this development.
As an increasing amount of people are consuming digital offerings via
smartphones, tablets, or even wearables, the ability to work with an
omnichannel mindset is becoming of greater importance.
Over the past year, we have seen larger importance placed on
understanding online customers, with a focus on dynamic and
interactive online deals, which create a need for niche specialists.
The outcome is an ever-evolving definition of what a pure web

Also, the Data Science community is growing rapidly. Data Scientists

Similarly, there are new German speaking events, such as the Data Leader
Day in Berlin, which allows Line Managers to get a better insight and
exchange the impacts of Data Science across their businesses.
As an increasing number of companies are in the middle

With that said, the Nordic market is not quite as advanced
in its use of data in comparison to other markets such as
the USA or the UK.
One thing is for sure though—with more companies and
skilled analysts in this technology-driven market such as
the Nordics, it won’t take long until it has caught up.
Analysts in Norway are paid on average 20% more than
their counterparts in Sweden. Despite the difference
in population and demographic, demand is highest in
Norway, which has had a knock-on effect on the salaries
that are on offer compared to its neighbour Sweden.
The demands in the Nordics for skilled, analytical staff is
increasing at a fast rate. Many companies are becoming
aware that analytical and digital competencies are core
for a successful business and are taking action to get
these skills in-house.

This is not just because the required skills are niche, but also due to
the immaturity of the market, leading to many businesses being unsure
about which skills their business needs in order to get the most out of
their company data.
With everyone talking about Big Data in the Nordics, data and
technology are booming. Although there are a lot of opportunities for
Big Data analysts, there are also bigger challenges for companies to
find the right skills.

Although compared to the UK, where the use of SAS is dropping, in the
Nordics, there is still a reliance on the tool.
There may need to be a similar turn (as in the UK) towards open source
tools such as R, which is more flexible and gives more analysts freedom to
play with data, in comparison to “drag and drop” SAS.
Marketing and Insight is one of the fastest growing fields
of advanced analytical in the Nordics.

“With the need for web analysts growing, the
market is going to grow in Norway, which will lead
to an increase in salaries in neighbouring countries.”

Salaries reflect the financial strength of the individual countries as
well as the need for web analysts, with Norwegian salaries being
approximately 20% higher than Swedish. Salaries in Denmark, however
are around 5% higher than those in Norway.
The main tools still used are Google Analytics in Sweden and Norway,
with Denmark flying the flag for Adobe.
And employers too are divided into large traditional companies and
banks, IT consultancies, and E-commerce businesses with a high level
of data transactions.
Digital Analytics in the Nordics is mainly concentrated in
Copenhagen and Stockholm, although Oslo and Gothenburg
are on the way up in popularity.

This has pushed up salaries and demand across the Nordics,
shifting people’s views on relocation, as candidates are
becoming more open to relocation between the main
Scandinavian cities: Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen.
Candidates are more interested in the datasets, tools, and
company position than where they are based.
Companies have picked up on this and we are seeing very
competitive relocation packages on offer.
As “Data Scientist” is one of the most sought-after titles globally,
many companies are looking for the same profiles.

As gaming companies rely heavily on real-time data to make informed decisions,
such as adjusting the odds of a major sporting event through to targeted marketing
for relapsed members, tools such as Hadoop help process multiple transactions and
handle virtually limitless concurrent tasks or jobs.
All the firms we work with are heavy SQL environments, so there is still a need
for hands-on BI developers with strong SSIS and SSRS skills to build out new
functionality in those data warehouses.
They do, however, need to have strong reporting skills and ideally
some exposure to visualisation tools such as Tableau.

Lines are becoming blurred and Data Analysts are also called Data
Scientists, with a large focus on Machine Learning.
France also has a high number of CRM Campaign and Product
Managers. A slight difference here to any other countries is that
the large focus is on email marketing. Technologies and tools used
are marketing leading and Adobe is often the tool of choice.
Marketing and Insight looks similar to the marketplace in the UK
at the moment. We have seen a gradual reduction in candidates
using SAS in their roles.
