2. Welcome to the Harnham annual salary guide for 2015 - 2016,
and our latest look back over a year in data and analytics.
It gives us great pleasure to
release our very first European
salary guide!
Our European team is the newest
within Harnham and has grown
from strength to strength over
the past 18 months.
With specialist bilingual teams
focusing on the major European
countries we have benefited
greatly from our position as a
truely global specialist in Data
and Analytics.
One thing that has become
apparent whilst putting together
this guide is how data and
analytics is becoming recognised
as one the most in demand
skillsets in mainland Europe.
European-based firms are sitting
up taking notice of the global
data market and are investing
heavily into these areas.
As such, competition for skilled
resources is high.
Candidates are also a lot more
open to intercountry and cross-
border relocation and many
companies are incentivising many
to move.
I believe this guide will provide
insight into what the in-demand
skills and regions are in Europe.
One thing’s for sure, the demand
for talented analysts shows no
sign of slowing down!

5. Salaries in Gibraltar and Malta are on a par
with like-for-like roles in the UK. There is
a lot of competition for the best talent in
these locations which pushes up salaries.
Data and Analytics in continental Europe
isn’t as mature a discipline as it is in the UK
or the USA.
German salaries are higher in Big Data
and Data Science than the rest of Europe.
Apache Spark is replacing Hadoop as the
most popular tool in the Big Data industry.
Data science roles and responsibilities are
very diverse and the skills required for them
vary considerably.
Analytics candidates in Norway can
expect to be paid almost 20% more
than those in Sweden.

What is interesting about this is that needs vary depending on
the geographical location of the company. Berlin, for example, is
home to a vast amount of start-ups, while global players seem to
dominate in Munich.
Regardless of what size the company is and what
sector they operate in, digital transformation has not passed
unnoticed and there is a constant need for data experts in order to
keep a competitive edge through data-driven insights.
We have seen an increase in overall salaries on last year at all
levels, and as demand increases for specialist skills and niche tools,
this has contributed to the increase in salaries and packages on
offer in Germany.
Germany Big Data and Data Science professionals
are among the best paid in mainland Europe.

We have seen a rapid increase in the
demand for experienced Data and Analytics
professionals across Germany.

OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“Keeping up to date with open source
trends is of great importance for Engineers.”
- Maximilian Kämpfe
This brings along new “hot topics” in the data and technology world. Open
source projects such as Spark, Mesos, and Storm are very popular, and
candidates who can demonstrate hands-on commercial experience with
these tools are now in very high demand.
It is also important to note that German salaries
in Big Data are the highest in Europe.
Big Data remains a buzzword in the German Market. As the volume,
velocity, and variety of data increases, platforms and programs adapt in
order to become faster, more in depth, and more effective.

SALARY GUIDE 2016 - GERMANY - PAGE 8
OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“There has recently been a decrease in interest
in SAS, while R is on the rise due to its improved
functionality and cost.”
- Judith Merz
We believe that the R job growth trend will continue mainly due to the fact
that the tool is free and relatively easy to use in conjunction with SAS and
many other tools. R is adding more functions each year, and last year added
more functionality than SAS has in total.
Similar to other markets, there are declining numbers of candidates using
SAS. In addition, some Marketing Insights roles are combining Data Science
skillsets, though there is still demand for the more traditional marketing
analyst in Germany.
Companies in Germany are currently showing a great interest in
candidates with skillsets combining tools like R, SQL, and other
visualisation tools.

9. digital analytics
SALARY GUIDE 2016 - GERMANY - PAGE 9
OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“Google Analytics remains to be the most
popular tool in Germany, but Analysts are
experimenting with packages such as R.”
- Maximilian Kämpfe
Tag management systems, which allow teams to process customised and
dynamic ad-hoc analysis without losing time in the backend, are a great
example for this development.
As an increasing amount of people are consuming digital offerings via
smartphones, tablets, or even wearables, the ability to work with an
omnichannel mindset is becoming of greater importance.
Over the past year, we have seen larger importance placed on
understanding online customers, with a focus on dynamic and
interactive online deals, which create a need for niche specialists.
The outcome is an ever-evolving definition of what a pure web
analyst is.

10. data science
SALARY GUIDE 2016 - GERMANY - PAGE 10
OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“A Data Scientist not only needs a strong and deep
technical skillset with hands-on experience, but
they also need a very good business acumen.”
- Judith Merz
Also, the Data Science community is growing rapidly. Data Scientists
exchange their knowledge and thoughts about tools and technologies at
different meet-ups and events in Germany.
Similarly, there are new German speaking events, such as the Data Leader
Day in Berlin, which allows Line Managers to get a better insight and
exchange the impacts of Data Science across their businesses.
As an increasing number of companies are in the middle
of their digital transformation, there has been a significant
increase in demand for Data Science experts, especially
within the start-up scene in Berlin.

nordics
With that said, the Nordic market is not quite as advanced
in its use of data in comparison to other markets such as
the USA or the UK.
One thing is for sure though—with more companies and
skilled analysts in this technology-driven market such as
the Nordics, it won’t take long until it has caught up.
Analysts in Norway are paid on average 20% more than
their counterparts in Sweden. Despite the difference
in population and demographic, demand is highest in
Norway, which has had a knock-on effect on the salaries
that are on offer compared to its neighbour Sweden.
The demands in the Nordics for skilled, analytical staff is
increasing at a fast rate. Many companies are becoming
aware that analytical and digital competencies are core
for a successful business and are taking action to get
these skills in-house.

OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“Big Data may be a fashionable term, it is
still the future and something companies
need to prepare themselves for.”
- Alex Hutchings
This is not just because the required skills are niche, but also due to
the immaturity of the market, leading to many businesses being unsure
about which skills their business needs in order to get the most out of
their company data.
With everyone talking about Big Data in the Nordics, data and
technology are booming. Although there are a lot of opportunities for
Big Data analysts, there are also bigger challenges for companies to
find the right skills.

OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“More flexible tools such as R will create
limitless possibilities.”
- Sabrina Vidal Bjørnstad
Although compared to the UK, where the use of SAS is dropping, in the
Nordics, there is still a reliance on the tool.
There may need to be a similar turn (as in the UK) towards open source
tools such as R, which is more flexible and gives more analysts freedom to
play with data, in comparison to “drag and drop” SAS.
Marketing and Insight is one of the fastest growing fields
of advanced analytical in the Nordics.

OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“With the need for web analysts growing, the
market is going to grow in Norway, which will lead
to an increase in salaries in neighbouring countries.”
- Janos Andersson
Salaries reflect the financial strength of the individual countries as
well as the need for web analysts, with Norwegian salaries being
approximately 20% higher than Swedish. Salaries in Denmark, however
are around 5% higher than those in Norway.
The main tools still used are Google Analytics in Sweden and Norway,
with Denmark flying the flag for Adobe.
And employers too are divided into large traditional companies and
banks, IT consultancies, and E-commerce businesses with a high level
of data transactions.
Digital Analytics in the Nordics is mainly concentrated in
Copenhagen and Stockholm, although Oslo and Gothenburg
are on the way up in popularity.

SALARY GUIDE 2016 - NORDICS - PAGE 20
OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“The Data Scientist today needs to not only
know the technology, but also the commercial
aspect of the business.”
- Janos Andersson
This has pushed up salaries and demand across the Nordics,
shifting people’s views on relocation, as candidates are
becoming more open to relocation between the main
Scandinavian cities: Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen.
Candidates are more interested in the datasets, tools, and
company position than where they are based.
Companies have picked up on this and we are seeing very
competitive relocation packages on offer.
As “Data Scientist” is one of the most sought-after titles globally,
many companies are looking for the same profiles.

MALTA
malta and gibraltar
Both used to be associated with large customer call centres for
the iGaming industry. However, these regions are now home to
some of the most talented and largest Data and Analytics teams
in Europe.
Many of whom are pushing the boundaries in data and analytics,
and now competitively offer talented professionals the chance to
develop and improve their specialist knowledge.
Who wouldn’t be interested in working in a market that betters
your skills and also offers 300 days a year of sunshine?
Both regions now represent genuine career
opportunities for Data and Analytics professionals
who are looking for a different pace of life.

OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“Big Data and Data Science experience still
command the highest salaries in these regions.”
- Alex Hutchings
As gaming companies rely heavily on real-time data to make informed decisions,
such as adjusting the odds of a major sporting event through to targeted marketing
for relapsed members, tools such as Hadoop help process multiple transactions and
handle virtually limitless concurrent tasks or jobs.
All the firms we work with are heavy SQL environments, so there is still a need
for hands-on BI developers with strong SSIS and SSRS skills to build out new
functionality in those data warehouses.
They do, however, need to have strong reporting skills and ideally
some exposure to visualisation tools such as Tableau.
SALARY GUIDE 2016 - MALTA GIBRALTAR - PAGE 27
There has been a concentrated push towards Big Data tools over
the past 12 months for some of the larger firms in these locations.

OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“Data visualisation tools are becoming more
and more attractive for companies.”
- Aaron Smith
Analysts at all levels need SQL. However, candidates that come with
some knowledge of data visualisation tools have many companies
interested in them.
Some fantastic projects are happening in Online Gaming, including
personalisation for each time you log in to your account, predictive
modelling for business outcomes, and building the perfect games
based on customer data.
Relocation has become extremely popular with people looking for a
slower pace of life, with amazing career opportunities, professional
development and competitive salaries.
A huge number of Insight roles have been newly created within these
regions. Companies are growing from strength to strength and are
heavily investing into building bigger teams to attempt to tackle the
huge amount of data that is available to them.

SALARY GUIDE 2016 - MALTA GIBRALTAR - PAGE 29
OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“We have seen strong investment in Digital
Analytics tools by many companies in this area.”
- Aaron Smith
The most popular and sought-after skillsets have been in
Conversion Rate Optimisation due to Web Analysts being focused
on analysing the customer journey and how they can make it as
simple as possible for their customers.
Our clients in this area are innovative and make informed decisions
largely based on the dashboards and presentations that their digital
analysts produce, though we have seen slightly less tagging and
implementation roles.
Over the last 12 months as a business, we have recruited for
a number of Digital Analytics positions in both Malta and Gibraltar.

SALARY GUIDE 2016 - MALTA GIBRALTAR - PAGE 30
OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“There is a drive by all iGaming firms to utilise open
source tools in Data Science (Python and R).”
- Alex Hutchings
As companies strive to build the “perfect” digital experience and take
precious market share from the competition, they are turning to PhD-
educated Data Scientists to build advanced models that can use data to
drive new product development.
We are also seeing Data Science teams supporting marketing teams of
major firms. They monitor and report on customer behaviour data, which
is then passed to marketing and retention teams who can target those
players with new promotions and offers in “real time”.
Due to the size of these firms, we are seeing Data Scientists working
across multiple areas including Product, Marketing, Finance, and Business
Intelligence.
This is the newest and most sought-after skillset on the islands.

francebenelux
There is a clear distinction between internal employees and external
consultants. Start-ups are keen to recruit those talents internally, while
bigger and more established companies tend to rely on consultancies.
We don’t fail to notice the Big 4 consultancies are now major players in
the Data and Analytics scene across these regions.
As digital analytics is moving from the web to mobile apps, experience
with such apps and event-based tracking is becoming more and more
important.
Also, we see a transition to Data Science happening. While most
companies still use out-the-box analytics solutions from the big vendors,
the first movers are already building their analytics solutions in-house.
Some understanding of database management, programming and
statistical modelling will be the differentiators between traditional web
analysts and ambitious data scientists.
It is an exciting time to get into Data and Analytics in France and
Benelux. Following the example of mature markets such as the
UK and the USA, many companies are investing to enhance their
performance through the use of data.

OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“Big Data Engineers are the new Data
Engineers Knowledge in the Spark
framework is highly demanded.”
- Wesley Taupin
Candidates in this space are excited by the opportunity to learn new tools, get
exposure to cutting edge technologies, and the chance to work with large datasets.
The real challenge facing these regions is finding experienced technicians to
support the growing need for data and Big Data analysts.
Over the coming years, this trend should shift with the creation of new academic
curriculums dedicated to data and technology, helping to move the market on an
upward trajectory.
Data and Technology profiles are highly sought-after across France
and Benelux. We have seen an increase in demand for specialist
skillsets, which has increased salaries across the regions.

SALARY GUIDE 2016 - FRANCE BENELUX - PAGE 35
OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“An interesting time for this industry and there is
a lot of crossover with the Data Science teams.”
- Wesley Taupin
This has been replaced with R, which analysts find more
interesting to use for reporting.
Lines are becoming blurred and Data Analysts are also called Data
Scientists, with a large focus on Machine Learning.
France also has a high number of CRM Campaign and Product
Managers. A slight difference here to any other countries is that
the large focus is on email marketing. Technologies and tools used
are marketing leading and Adobe is often the tool of choice.
Marketing and Insight looks similar to the marketplace in the UK
at the moment. We have seen a gradual reduction in candidates
using SAS in their roles.

36. digital analytics
SALARY GUIDE 2016 - FRANCE BENELUX - PAGE 36
OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“Companies are looking for additional skills
such as SQL, R, or BIME.”
- Aaron Smith
France also has a number of its own tools (AT Internet, BIME)
that are also widely used.
Traditionally, an analyst would have to be strong in Google Analytics,
AT Internet, or Adobe Analytics. We have seen a rise in demand
for analysts to be proficient in SQL, R, Tableau/BIME, and Python.
Companies are looking to build and develop the skillsets of their
digital analysts.
It’s an exciting time to be in involved with Digital Analytics in France.
There has been a creation of a huge number of agencies, focusing on
Digital Analytics, who work in tandem with in-house teams to improve
the way companies interact with their customers.

SALARY GUIDE 2016 - FRANCE BENELUX - PAGE 37
OUR CONSULTANT’S THOUGHTS:
“The most sought-after programming language in
Data Science is Python.”
- Wesley Taupin
Combining complex mathematical and statistical models, IT coding and
programming skills, as well as developed business acumen, Data Science
has become one of the most popular recruiting fields in Data and Analytics
within France and Benelux.
The rise of academic curriculums dedicated to Data Science has seen a
rise in the number of junior data scientist profiles, while it is still tough to
find more experienced Data Scientists. This has increased salaries at the
higher levels.
In the France-Benelux area, companies are eager to make their
data talk because they now understand the commercial value
and profitable insight that it brings!
