The Ultimate Blogging Guide

The Ultimate
Blogging Guide
I am Hardeep Asrani
I’m a WordPress developer, blogger, and
reader.
Hello!
blogWhat is it exactly?
Pick a topic.1
Pick a topic.
◉Pick a topic you love and have some
knowledge about.
◉Don’t pick a topic just because you see
others make money writing about it.
◉Focus on one topic. Don’t write about too
diverse a range of topics.
◉Don’t pick something you have a little to
knowledge about.
Know your audience.2
Knowing your real audience will make sure you’re creating
right content, for the right people. Keep your reader person in
mind. If the content that you’re crafting doesn’t appeal to
your audience, it will be hard to convert that traffic into a loyal
reader base.
Know your audience.
◉ You are your first reader.
◉ Interact with your existing readers.
◉ Reply to comments.
◉ Ask questions.
◉ Stats. Stats. Stats.
Focus on your
readers, not search
engines.
Maintain a
schedule.
3
Don’t.
“Blog as often as you can produce quality content. If that’s
once a month, that’s ok. If that’s everyday, that’s awesome
too. But DON’T blog regularly because the social media
expert who spoke at the last conference you attended told
you that you HAD to blog at LEAST once a day to be a “real”
blogger and get “real” traffic and get “real” credibility on the
Interwebz. Nope.”
- beingcheryl.com
Maintain a schedule.
4. Craft Good
Content
Content is the king. You will read it on every blog. Content is
the most important thing when it comes to writing. You can
maybe bring people to your blog with good marketing and
SEO, but if your content isn’t great, they aren’t going to stay
there for long.
Craft good content.
This is probably what most of the “bloggers” do. Seriously,
using Ctrl + C, followed by Ctrl + V, isn’t blogging. Copying
saves a lot of time off your work, and you can post dozens of
articles within few hours. But – what makes you think that you
can do it for a really long time? Or that Google won’t block you
for plagiarism?
If you’re interested in writing a fine blog post then do some
research, use your knowledge in the field, and write it down on
a piece of digital paper. Not only that you write a quality post,
but you also get better as a writer.
Write original content.
Would you like to have a 16GB iPod or a 36GB “Made in
China” MP3 player? Just like that, you don’t need a blog where
you write 80 articles/day but a blog where you take your time to
write every single blog post. Also, you don’t need to write 10
pages long posts when the real content isn’t long.
Also reuse your old blog posts. Update older posts with fresh
content.
Focus on quality, not quantity.
It’s important that you have a solid structure for your blog post.
You just can’t put anything anywhere and then expect your
readers to get you. Let’s divide a blog post to three parts:
◉Introduction: That’s the part where you tell your readers what your post is about. It
starts with the title of your posts, and then some info about the topic.
◉Supportive content: Now after the introduction to the subject, you will break down
every piece of information, sentence by sentence, to your reader. Every sentence should
add value to the content.
◉Call to action: Now what do you want your users to do after reading your post? Do you
want them to buy a project, relevant to your post? Do you want them to leave a comment
below, or share your post on social media? This is the part where you start the user
interaction.
Which came first, the chicken
or the egg?
You’re not giving an exam, or writing for search engines.
Computers are trying to be more like humans, so why are you
trying to be like a computer?
Appeal to them, like you’re telling something to a friend of your
friend, or a relative that you’ve met after a long time. After
reading your content, a reader should feel something. It could
a feeling of joy, sorrow, success, inspiration or anything. If
they’re not feeling anything then your job is not done.
You’re a human, writing to
another human.
Your blog posts don’t have to look boring. Add some
visualization, fonts, images, videos or whatever helps you to
make your content beautiful. I’m not talking about filling it with
the unnecessary, but fill with what’s necessary.
And please, for the love of our eyes, don’t use Comic Sans!!
They’re not funny and nobody likes them. And you don’t need
to use too much bold, italic, or underline when it’s not
necessary. Yes, it’s good to highlight content when needed
with these, but don’t use it randomly.
Be beautiful, not boring.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. In simple words,
making your blog search-engine friendly. SEO is important, but
it’s still less important than the quality of your content. Here are
few simple tips:
The buzz word: SEO.
◉ Keywords in title (55 characters).
◉ Well crafted meta description (140 characters).
◉ Image file name and alt text.
◉ Use anchor text in links.
◉ Focus on mobile optimization and site speed.
◉ If using WordPress, install Yoast SEO.
“
Don’t expect your blog to generate
thousands of views over night. It
takes time. A lot of time.
And yea, one last advise.
You can’t fool
Google, so don’t try.
Period
Any questions ?
You can find me at
◉ me@hardeepasrani.com
◉ @HardeeepAsrani on Twitter.
◉ Also, you can just say “Hi” and start a
conversation as soon as this presentation
ends. 
Thanks!
