consumer devices, with the “things” being

other devices, IoT envisions a future of
near-infinite connectivity.
In a nutshell, the evolution of technology

Today, many cities are already generating
massive streams of data through
innumerable, yet unnoticed sensors.
Data is collected for many different
activities that we probably don’t expect
data to be collected for, such as trash
collection or pedestrian traffic. Some are
even finding ways to use smart sensors
for public safety and national security.

In France, the city of Paris is working to
integrate smart sensors into streetlights,
saving energy while providing useful
information to researchers and analysts.
This kind of use allows for preventative
maintenance and management, while
saving costs and time while reducing any
negative environmental footprint.

Our “modern” healthcare system is pretty

1. With electronic records, doctors, nurses, and
specialists have faster and easier access to
an individual patient’s data.
One of the greatest advantages of utilizing
electronic records is that a doctor or specialist can
access crucial patient data, even if that data
originated from another office or hospital!

2. Specialized implants, such as wearable heart
rate monitors, create and process genetic/clinical
data to predict the “who, what, where, when, and
whys” of healthcare!
With the proper data, doctors can accurately
diagnose and treat patients. This type of real-time
tracking can lead to preventative actions to avoid
further illness, injury, or death, as well as prompt
treatment.

data will also be a help for researchers.

- For example, one of those products, Nest, has
taken the home automation industry by storm
with its WiFi-enabled and self-learning
thermostat (and further popularized home
automation when it was acquired by Google).

net-enabled toaster?) and over-engineered
(smart refrigerators)...

…but most come off as innovative: hobbyists are
configuring raspberry pis and arduino boards to
create noise and gas/fire/smoke sensors.
Despite the lack of some universal standard or
streamlined flow between multiple devices, home
automation is already way ahead in the IoT game.

Better Environment!

- Aside from environmental efficiency inside
cities, greater connectivity can promote
environmental sustainability. With smart
sensors and satellite technology, wildlife
organizations, environmental protection
agencies, and scientists can easily monitor
water quality, conditions in our atmosphere, or
the activities of animal populations. This
method certainly isn’t new and is already
employed by scientists in these fields, but
many of these devices haven’t achieved an
IoT-level of mutual connectivity.

- When multiple scientific devices are in frequent
communication, there is no doubt that it will be a
complex system but the benefits of having
interoperability far outweigh the cons. With a wider
range of data stemming from different areas and
environments all over the world, scientists can
easily observe certain phenomena occurring in
different places and they can conduct research with

- True IoT is close, but there are still some obstacles
to achieving that. First, the nature of IoT technology
implies that devices will probably be smaller and/or
plentiful. Secondly, these types of technology still
produces as much e-waste as normal technology
does. The more devices, the more e-waste that is
produced, so steps should be taken in order to
prevent IoT from having a detrimental footprint on
the environment.

IoT technology in their stores. All retailers
currently use RFID technology to monitor
inventories, providing insights into who is buy
what and during what season, etc. This kind
of data allows marketers to create better sales
and strategies. Real-time RFID data also
gives opportunities to fine-tune logistics, so
there is never any shortage or delay in
shipping more stock. In the year 2014, the
RFID world market is estimated to have
surpassed $20 billion, but within the IoT
space, the retail industry still has much
technology to take advantage of!

- You may not realize it, but most of us already
carry what we can consider an IoT device in
our pockets! Smartphones carry a multitude of
data sources such as barometers,
compasses, and GPS sensors. For retailers
and businesses that adopt an IoT
infrastructure, this data can be used to create
promotions based on location (GPS) or
customer preferences (smartphone data). For
example, a retailer offering free WiFi in their
store can show promotions to those who wish
to connect — via confirmation or sign in form
— and once a visitor is connected, retailers
may have the ability to collect more data from
devices, albeit not without controversy.

broader funnel for customer acquisition, it
created a new market for IoT-enabled
devices!
- Ultimately, being interconnected also means
more devices in the network! In business,
being able to adapt means being able to

True IoT - Is it
Possible?

- 2014 is about to come to a close and we still
have yet to reach a true “Internet of Things”.
We have the devices, we have the network,
and we have the ideas. What are we missing?
First and foremost, we need the support. Our
most used devices today are still personal
computers, laptops, tablets, and
smartphones, devices that aren’t exactly the
“things” we envision in IoT. Fortunately, we
have the ability to manufacture said devices
and in time, the masses will use them. At
least with large and renowned technology
companies such as Apple and Cisco investing
in home automation and other IoT systems,
people are starting to take notice.

- Technology dictates our lives and we’re steadily
approaching the next step in the evolution of
technology. But before we get there, we still have
many kinks to iron out. From widespread adoption
to privacy concerts and even environmental issues,
we still have much work to do as beneficiaries of
