Hannah Haas Writing Sample - News Release

  1. -more- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Dec. 1, 2014 GIRLS ON THE RUN RAISES SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS THROUGH ANNUAL REINDEER ROMP 5K (DURHAM, NC, Dec. 1, 2014)—One hundred percent of the proceeds from the annual Reindeer Romp 5K will go to the Girls on the Run of the Triangle scholarship program. The scholarships are awarded to young girls in the area who want to participate in the Girls on the Run program but cannot afford the registration fees. Last spring, 27 percent of Girls on the Run participants received scholarships. Throughout the past year, Girls on the Run has provided scholarships to more than 450 girls in need of financial assistance. The 5Ks at the end of the spring and fall programs are designed to both celebrate participants’ achievements and raise the money that makes scholarships possible. This race, to be held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary on Dec. 6, will host runners from all across the Triangle, including participants from over 50 Girls on the Run teams. 2. GOTR FUNDRASING 5K Page 2 of 2 -###- “Without the scholarship money, we never could’ve afforded the program,” said Jane Smith, mother of two Girls on the Run participants. “It’s been such a blessing. My girls love going to meetings and I love knowing that they are learning to be healthy and confident young women.” Girls on the Run International serves over 120,000 girls in over 200 cities across North America. Through a combination of running, group activities, individual goal setting and a community service project, Girls on the Run teaches values that lead to a confident sense of self. The goal of the program is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Girls celebrate their end of season accomplishments by participating in a 5K event, supported and cheered on by their families, friends and our community For more information, please contact Hannah Haas, Public Relations Intern, at 704-576-9900 or by email at hhaas@live.unc.edu.
