The music video will tell the narrative of a breakup from the perspective of the girl moving on and having fun without her ex. It will be a hybrid of a performance and narrative video, showing the girl lip-syncing the song's lyrics and telling the story through short shots and cuts. The video aims to appeal to a target audience of 16-25 year olds and represent overcoming a breakup in a fun and undepressed manner, counter to stereotypes of women being weakened by breakups. It also aims to represent theories around materialism, gender objectification, and counter-stereotyping women's strength after a breakup.
3. SYNOPSIS
• The narrative of my music video is going to be showing the process of a breakup. However,
the music video is going to go against the stereotype of the girl being depressed after the
breakup. This is going to be shown throughout the video to be fun-loving and not have sad
moment. In the start of the video i will have the girl getting ready for a night out in a room
with her friends. During the getting ready scenes, the main girl gets a text from her ex saying
'i miss you etc'. This shot will be a shot looking down on the phone as if its looking from the
girls eyes and then swerves to a photo or album of pictures of them in the past. She grabs it
and starts looking into it. The image will then turn into a flashback which is edited in black
and white then goes back to present day. They go to a party in the video showing how she's
having fun without him.
• The video will present some theorists, Like Godwin. Godwin says that a key aspect of music
videos is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. I will try to do this with some of my lyrics
for example having her sit with his friends on "being good friends with your friends" or
showing the colour she’s wearing on "wearing your favourite colour under the light". This
links to how the girls will be sexualised in the clips by wearing exposing clothes. This will be
highlighting bell hooks theory of women are objectified.
4. LYRICS
Remember when you said that there's no second chance?
Oh baby, I heard you been hoping you could change the past
You miss the longer nights, you miss the long goodbyes,
You miss the longer nights
(Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep)
Well did you ever think that it was hard for me?
Do I get off like nothing happened, nonchalantly? I got you feeling like, I got you feeling right
I got you feeling like
(Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep)
That's my shape, I made the shadow
That's my lane, don't wear it out though
Feeling myself can't be illegal, illegal
So sue me for looking so pretty tonight
Wearing your favourite colour under the lights
For moving on, doing everything right
So sue me for being good friends with your friends
And running into you at the place that we met
For being something you can't forget
So sue me
‘sassy’ lip-syncing
Shows her with them
5. LYRICS
It's hard to see me on when you've been off as hell
But I'm not gonna throw myself because you adore yourself
I know it's hard to see what you don't want to see,
I know it's hard to see
(Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep)
That's my shape, I made the shadow
That's my lane, don't wear it out though
Feeling myself can't be illegal, illegal
So sue me for looking so pretty tonight
Wearing your favourite colour under the lights
For moving on, doing everything right
So sue me for being good friends with your friends
And running into you at the place that we met
For being something you can't forget
So sue me
Oh, I, I, I guess I'm hard to ignore
Pick up that jaw off the floor
So sue me for looking so pretty tonight, Wearing your favourite colour under the lights
For moving on, doing everything right
So sue me for being good friends with your friends
And running into you at the place that we met
For being something you can't forget
So sue me, Sue me, baby
Uses hand movements to “pick up”
6. GENRE
• I want my video to be a hybrid of a performance and narrative videos. A
performance video focuses on showing footage of the artist or band either in a
casual environment, i.e. socialising with friends, or performing. These types of videos
often have Lip-syncing in them. Throughout my video I want my main character to
be lip-syncing the words as if she's speaking directly to the ex, breaking the fourth
wall between her and the audience.
• However, my video will also be telling a story in a fast pace with many different
short shots and cuts. This makes it also a narrative music video.
7. ETHNICITY AND CLASS
• If possible, I will present more than one ethnicity in my video, which should help
representation and attracting audiences. However the majority of the actors and the
main actress will be white so this may limit how much certain ethnicities relate to
the concept of the video.
• I would hope that my video doesn’t discrimminate against anyone and therefore
appeals to all. However the social class may be shown as a C class, due to a bigger
house and lovely room and clothes etc. So shows a middle class look. This means
the video will not relate to the struggler audience (Young and Rubicam) as there
wont be a reference to any economic struggle etc.
8. GENDER AND AGE
• I will have all my actors be young teenagers of the age of 18 due to my audience
target being 16-25. This means the video will be relatable to the audience. The
main character being a girl will mean the gender will be relatable for girls but may
not be for guys.
• I hope to make a relatable video for my age group through the subjects shown in
my video. For example, most young girls go through a break up or the use of
partying and drinking as a reference to the typical Friday night.
9. INTERTEXUALITY
• My intertextuality link is Legally Blonde. A film where in the end she
rejects her ex after Warner approaches her and asks her to take him
back, since she has “proven herself”. Elle rejects him, realizing that he
is shallow and a "complete bonehead".
• This is shown not only through the lyrics and narrative but I will be
using the famous pink colour from Legally blonde as a constant
colour in my video- not only in the clothes but in the room I will be
shooting in as well.
10. THEORY:
• One of the main theories I would like to represent in my video is
that I would like to appeal to an 'aspirer' audience. The theory on
'The asiprer' by Young and Rubicam says about materialistic
people who are "driven by others' perceptions". This is how my
main character will be drawing confidence from the way her Ex is
missing her etc.
• I would also like to use bell hooks theory that females are often
sexualised, through the clothes and the reaction from the boys e.g
the way they look at her. However, at the same time counter-
stereotype the view that woman are weaker (McRobbie) as I want
to show she’s stronger without him.
