The representation of each character was well thought out and planned before
recording any footage for our final piece. Each character had a specific types of
clothing they should be wearing in the opening, having that shows the audience
by only their appearance their social classes and what role they are playing
immediately whilst watching the opening from start to finish. There are
characters in the opening such as the hit men that live up to specific stereotypes
because of what society says about them and their race. On the other hand some
of the stereotypes were broken in then opening such as only hit men are male. My
group and I thought we could change that and use femme fatale to break the
specific stereotype in our thriller opening. We done this by using female
characters such as myself and Fatima to be in charge of the torture scene
therefore, me and Fatima were the ones torturing the kidnapped character
because of what he’s done.
For instance, the clothing type for a boss is almost
like an office type look making them look
intelligent and confident with themselves. These
type of characters are stuck up and ignorant,
always thinking their right. They also think that
everything revolves around them. This is shown by
their body posture and it automatically shows the
audience that they are in charge of the whole
situation and they are the ones in power.
These type of characters focus on one main
convention which is iconography because
everything they own has to be high tech and well
quality. They also look reckless and don’t care
about anyone but themselves. This is shown to the
audience by the way they talk to other characters
in the opening and their facial expressions gives
that impression for the audience when watching
the opening. The social groups thinks that they are
superior and nobody is above them because they
want to be in charge of everything and they almost
think that everybody else is emperor.
In the movie Taken the man is still being ignorant and
not giving the boss the information he wants. My final
product reflects real media products which indicates
that our thriller opening is up to scratch with by
following the conventions (characters and location)
that compliments the feel and creates a certain mood
for the audience. These characters are important for
the opening because all the information needed
Revolves around them. Even when they are being
tortured they don’t want to give any information the
boss needs which trigger their anger making these
characters more of a target. In my opening,
Retribution it enables the audience to sympathise
towards these certain characters. The social groups
that they are pit pointed towards are fearless human
beings. However, in Taken the man looks scared and
worried what will all this torture result too however,
we changed this and made our character fearless and
careless which shows in his facial expression when the
boss is trying to give him a final chance to give him
the information he wants.
The bosses in Retribution and Taken looking down at the male characters being torture makes
the boss more superior that them. These characters social group are the stubborn know it all
characters that think they are always right. The way their body posture is and the way they
are standing up straight shows the audience that they are important and play an significant
role in the opening which we tried doing and portraying for the audience whilst they are
watching. My group and I tried something different by taking the characters top off showing
the audience all of the scars and wounds that happened to him because he doesn’t want to
give the boss his information he requires. The audience may think sympathise towards the
character and then think that the boss to be the villain in the opening. This shows the audience
the different social classes when watching the opening because of how they are levelled in the
shot making the boss in an high status than the character that is being tortured.
The characters in Attack the block are similar
to the characters in Retribution. The characters
live up to their stereotype that society has
given them. The black male characters are the
hit men making them live up to their
stereotype as the being violent and aggressive
which they fulfils when they start the action in
the opening. They are wearing all dull colours
and their face is hidden, hiding their identity
and everything that shows in their facial
expressions. This enables them to get away
with the physical violence they are committing.
Using femme fatale as the people that are torturing Tony is very
different in this case. This is because most of the dirty work is done
by lower class males however, in Retribution we used female
characters to break that stereotype that only male characters are
the ones that does the dirty work. This can make it more interesting
and engaging for the audience because the audience doesn’t
expect what is actually happening and what would come next.
