What is social isolation?
An objective condition in which people interact very little
with others.
These can happen at home, school, work or in public.
(Community New Castle, 2014)

What is neurosis?
A mental and emotional disorder in which an individual
experiences extreme feelings of fear or worry. This can include
anxiety, indecision and interpersonal maladjustment.

• Laptops and Computers
• Tablets
• Video Gaming Consoles
• Social Media Networks
• Televisions
• Headphones
6. ISOLATION
People are not always alone, even when physically isolated.
Paul Tillich once wrote that the word „loneliness‟ exists to express the „pain
of being alone, while „solitude‟ expresses „the glory of being alone‟”
(Teen Ink, 2014).
Social Networking sites are not foundations but virtual worlds in which we
choose to lose ourselves in. The can deprive us from human
interaction but they cannot replace emotion.
7. EXAMPLES OF ISOLATION
• Talking to automated response phone systems
• Talk to no one as we do our banking
• Make no effort to talk to people in close proximity but will chat online to
people across the world
• Lack of personal contact
• Lack of verbal contact
• Texting friends when we arrive at their houses
• Texting and walking
• Texting in the same room

8. INTERNET ADDICTION
Internet Addiction is a disorder also known as Problematic
Internet use. It shows an excessive use of the internet
and lack of moderation.

• You are in a virtual relationship with your gadget
• You speak in text language
• Technology must come with you everywhere you go
• You always have a screen in front of your face
• You are always hearing your text tone in the back of your mind
• Neck and body stiffness from sitting at a computer all day
• Refreshing the page 10 times a minute
• Suffering from gadget separation anxiety
• You cannot imagine a world before invention of the internet
• It becomes difficult to hold a regular verbal conversation

13. INTERNET & SOCIAL NETWORKS – HOW MUCH
IS TOO MUCH?
A recent study from Harvard shows that “disclosing information about
oneself activates the same part of the brain that is associated with the
sensation of pleasure, the same pleasure that we get from eating food,
getting money or having even having sex. (Marketing, 2014).
• People enjoy sharing information about each other but this can become
obsessive or dangerous
• In moderation the internet is a successful tool
• In moderation social media is a platform for communication and staying
in touch with loved ones
• Excessive amounts of use are more likely to cause isolation and
neurosis
14. CONCLUSIONS
• Yes, technology does cause isolation and neurosis
• Studies show individuals are addicted to technology in
the society of modern day
• Addiction leads to negative effects
• Excessive use causes neurological damage
• Has been know to cause disorders
15. WHAT CAN WE DO TO AVOID ISOLATION AND
NEUROSIS?
• Remain social in reality, cyber reality is not going anywhere
any time soon
• Do activities that do not involve technology
• Spend time talking with friends outside of social networks
• You don‟t have to bring your phone with you everywhere
• Make the most of your time with family members
• Use technology in moderation
• Spend time outdoors
• Become aware of the things around you that do not involve
technology
