Pre-Conference Workshops
8:00 am - 5:00 pm: Certification Preparation Class
Certification is the badge of our profession. Employers large and small are increasingly seeking human resource professionals with the capabilities
to be an effective contributing partner to the bottom line. Earning your PHR or SPHR certification provides assurance to your employer that you
are HR Smart, dedicated to your profession and have the tools to be successful in today’s workplace.

The Pre-conference HR Florida Certification Prep Class is presented by a team of leading HR professionals. Primary focus of the day is key
concepts of all the functional areas from the HR body of knowledge. The prep class also offers test taking tips and what to expect on exam day.
Attendees will get the benefit of experienced facilitators, peer-to-peer interaction and a structured classroom environment to enhance learning.
You will also have the opportunity to share real world experiences with your fellow HR professionals. Notebooks are provided with all of the
presentations and access to an on-line final exam. Presenters: Linda L. Bailey, SPHR; Shelley (Shell) Fick, SPHR; Ron Hamilton;
Donald C. Works III, SPHR

9:00 am - 12:00 pm: HR Metrics: Speaking the Language of Profitability, The Basics (Pre-approved for 3 Strategic Recertification Credits)
In these economic times it is critical that HR be seen as a profit driver – not a cost center – and uses metrics that executives see as
measurements of success. When HR “speaks their language,” executives are more likely to listen. This session explores the basics of HR
metrics. 1) Learn the importance of using metrics to demonstrate value to your organization; 2) Gain a basic understanding of business metrics
- transactional and strategic, leading and lagging indicators, etc. Review basic HR metric concepts and terms; 3) Gain a basic understanding of
what to measure, the types of measurements you can use and sources of data. Presenter: Patricia Mathews, MBA, Consultant

9:00 am - 12:00 pm: What Has Happened to the Golden Rules of HR? The Legal Pitfalls Associated with Human Resources'
Use of Social Media (Pre-approved for 3 General Recertification Credits)
In today’s world of instant access to information, how much information is too much information? Social media once began as a resource for
friends to stay in touch, people to find matches and sharing information. However, employers are now capitalizing on the same social media
once used for personal means to research employees and candidates for hire. With social media and the onslaught of personal blogs and web
pages, the Golden Rules of HR professionals seem irrelevant and outdated. What should employers do (or not do) with all of the information that
they gather from a candidate’s webpage or blog? Do the Golden Rules still apply and if so, how does HR apply them to social media research?
Can employers legally consider information obtained from social media when making a hiring decision? If an employer may use social media
information in the hiring decision-making process, what liability does this create for the company? 1) Identify the legal risks associated with the
use of social media in human resources/recruitment efforts; 2) Minimize the legal risks of using social media for human resources/recruitment
efforts; and 3) Develop his/her own social media policy for his/her organization. Presenter: Carrie Cherveny, Esq.

9:00 am - 12:00 pm: Hack Your Work: Smart and Small HR (Pre-approved for 3 General Recertification Credits)
As the “HR department” for your entire company, does it feel like you can’t win? Participants will learn how to “hack” through priorities and
leverage free and inexpensive resources to regain time, influence, and sanity. This highly interactive session will provide practical, realistic
organizational development, compensation design, change management, internal communications, recruiting, marketing, all with real-world
measurable results to influence leaders and help set company direction. 1) Prioritize work and say “no” without getting fired; 2) Access and
use free tools and information related to recruiting, HR, and leadership; 3) Dig out from under the paperwork to influence leaders and help set
company direction. Presenter: Franny Oxford, SPHR

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm: Influence Strategies for HR Professionals (Pre-approved for 3 Strategic Recertification Credits)
HR professionals are constantly challenged to help improve their organization’s capabilities by delivering effective people management practices
at all levels of the organization. Among the many skills required to accomplish this is the ability to influence individuals and groups in varying
situations. In most cases this must be accomplished where the HR professional has little or no direct control related to the situation. It is also
important for managers to understand how other people and situations influence them.

This workshop will provide a greater understanding of personal motive preferences, the preferences of others, and application of this dynamic
toward becoming more effective in influencing specific work situations. At the core of this workshop are nine specific influence tactics that –
when used appropriately--can have a positive impact on the achievement of organizational objectives. Presenter: Dr. Robert K. Prescott, Ph.D.,
SPHR, Associate Professor of Human Resource Management, Crummer Graduate School of Business, Rollins College

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm: How HR Should Use Social Media to Meet Strategic Objectives (Pre-approved for 3 Strategic Recertification Credits)
This session will demystify social media, show exactly how HR professionals are using it today... including high profile case studies. After this
session, HR professionals will: 1.) Better understand social media best practices; 2) Learn to leverage social media to straighten their corporate
brand; and 3) Understand the tie between social media and employee engagement.Presenter: William Tincup, BA, MA, MBA, Co-owner,
Starr Tincup

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm: HR Metrics: Speaking the Language of Profitability, The Next Level (Pre-approved for 3 Strategic Recertification Credits)
HR professionals who are already using HR metrics may still encounter issues in capturing the attention of non-HR executives. It is critical that
HR be seen as a profit driver – not a cost center – and uses metrics that “speak” to executives in language they understand. 1) Understand
the concept of organizational strategic objectives and competitive advantage, and the competencies HR managers need in order for HR to be
viewed as a profit driver rather than a cost center. 2) Understand how to align the HR Mission and strategic objectives with the organization’s
Mission and strategic objectives. This is especially relevant as the economic recovery begins. Participants will audit their current HR Mission and
strategic objectives to evaluate their alignment. 3) Examine the HR metrics you currently use, evaluate their strategic relevance, and begin to
identify other HR measurements that are strategically aligned with organizational objectives. Understand how to communicate the numbers that
will engage the attention of your executives. Participants will work on case studies throughout. Presenter: Patricia Mathews, MBA, Consultant

    MEMBER ADVOCACY PROGRAM
We are very proud to announce that Florida is one of ten states selected to pilot SHRM’s new state of the art
member advocacy program to take HRVoice to another level.

Workplace Public Policy: Why HR Needs to Be More Proactive in this Debate
Presenters: Mike Aitken, Director, Governmental Affairs; Bob Carragher, Manager, Government Relations

This special two-hour session will focus on current issues affecting the HR profession and how to influence
federal/state public policy and regulatory efforts.
For years, the backbone of SHRM’s member advocacy program has been the HRVoice program, through
which members can send electronic messages to their elected officials on issues of interest to the HR
community. While important, this activity represents a small part of what SHRM’s advocacy strategy can and
should be. This session will showcase other opportunities for grassroots activism and why the HR community
can’t afford to maintain the status quo.

                          A New Paradigm for HR
                          Monday, August 30 – 1:15 pm – 3:30 pm
Ron C. Pilenzo, PhD, SPHR, RODC
The major threat facing HR today is the inability of HR to define itself in terms of what constitutes a true
profession and how to create the business partnership it strives to achieve. Ron will demonstrate how
to make a business case for moving the profession to the next level by using a building block approach
in analyzing the need for a new HR paradigm.
Ronald C. Pilenzo is President & CEO of The Global HR Consultancy, a management consulting firm
headquartered in Hobe Sound, Florida. A past President of SHRM, with over 50 years of experience
in the field of human resource management, business management and international relations, he
has been a keynote speaker, commentator, facilitator and panelist in the US and abroad, including the former USSR, the PRC,
Africa, Europe, South America and the Far East. He was awarded the World Federation of Personnel Management Association’s
(WFPMA) prestigious Georges Petitipas Award in 1990, as the person contributing the most to the profession of HR in the world.
He earned a BBA (cum laude) with a dual major in Economics and Industrial Relations and a MBA from the University of Detroit.
In 2005, Ron was awarded his Ph.D. in International Business from Kennedy-Western University.

                          The Leader of the Future
                          Tuesday, August 31 – 1:00 pm – 3:15 pm
                          John Spence
Based on the more than nine years of intensive research that John Spence carried out to write two
books, as well as 16 years of personal experience working with some of the world’s top leaders in
business, government, higher education and the non-profit sector – this program will identify the key
characteristics of outstanding leaders in a clear, straightforward and practical manner and address the
critical elements of building a winning, high-performance culture.
At the age of just 26, John was named CEO of an international Rockefeller foundation, overseeing
projects in 20 countries and reporting directly to the Chairman of the Board, Winthrop P. Rockefeller
III. Two years later John was nominated as one of the top CEOs under the age of 40 in Florida. Inc. Magazine’s “Zinc Online”
recognized him as one of America’s up and coming young business leaders. For the past 14 years, John has presented
workshops, speeches and executive coaching to more than 300 organizations worldwide. He is also the author of “Excellence
by Design – the six key characteristics of outstanding leaders” and “Awesomely Simple – essential business strategies for turning
ideas into action” and has been a guest lecturer at over 90 colleges and universities across the United States including Harvard,

The required organization capabilities of the future and what leaders should know and do to respond to
future business realities will be highlighted. It will end with implications for the changing role of human
resource professionals and competencies they must demonstrate to be successful. The participants will
be able to utilize the learning and practice of this workshop to transform their HR departments.

  • 3. Pre-Conference Workshops 8:00 am - 5:00 pm: Certification Preparation Class Certification is the badge of our profession. Employers large and small are increasingly seeking human resource professionals with the capabilities to be an effective contributing partner to the bottom line. Earning your PHR or SPHR certification provides assurance to your employer that you are HR Smart, dedicated to your profession and have the tools to be successful in today’s workplace. The Pre-conference HR Florida Certification Prep Class is presented by a team of leading HR professionals. Primary focus of the day is key concepts of all the functional areas from the HR body of knowledge. The prep class also offers test taking tips and what to expect on exam day. Attendees will get the benefit of experienced facilitators, peer-to-peer interaction and a structured classroom environment to enhance learning. You will also have the opportunity to share real world experiences with your fellow HR professionals. Notebooks are provided with all of the presentations and access to an on-line final exam. Presenters: Linda L. Bailey, SPHR; Shelley (Shell) Fick, SPHR; Ron Hamilton; Donald C. Works III, SPHR 9:00 am - 12:00 pm: HR Metrics: Speaking the Language of Profitability, The Basics (Pre-approved for 3 Strategic Recertification Credits) In these economic times it is critical that HR be seen as a profit driver – not a cost center – and uses metrics that executives see as measurements of success. When HR “speaks their language,” executives are more likely to listen. This session explores the basics of HR metrics. 1) Learn the importance of using metrics to demonstrate value to your organization; 2) Gain a basic understanding of business metrics - transactional and strategic, leading and lagging indicators, etc. Review basic HR metric concepts and terms; 3) Gain a basic understanding of what to measure, the types of measurements you can use and sources of data. Presenter: Patricia Mathews, MBA, Consultant 9:00 am - 12:00 pm: What Has Happened to the Golden Rules of HR? The Legal Pitfalls Associated with Human Resources' Use of Social Media (Pre-approved for 3 General Recertification Credits) In today’s world of instant access to information, how much information is too much information? Social media once began as a resource for friends to stay in touch, people to find matches and sharing information. However, employers are now capitalizing on the same social media once used for personal means to research employees and candidates for hire. With social media and the onslaught of personal blogs and web pages, the Golden Rules of HR professionals seem irrelevant and outdated. What should employers do (or not do) with all of the information that they gather from a candidate’s webpage or blog? Do the Golden Rules still apply and if so, how does HR apply them to social media research? Can employers legally consider information obtained from social media when making a hiring decision? If an employer may use social media information in the hiring decision-making process, what liability does this create for the company? 1) Identify the legal risks associated with the use of social media in human resources/recruitment efforts; 2) Minimize the legal risks of using social media for human resources/recruitment efforts; and 3) Develop his/her own social media policy for his/her organization. Presenter: Carrie Cherveny, Esq. 9:00 am - 12:00 pm: Hack Your Work: Smart and Small HR (Pre-approved for 3 General Recertification Credits) As the “HR department” for your entire company, does it feel like you can’t win? Participants will learn how to “hack” through priorities and leverage free and inexpensive resources to regain time, influence, and sanity. This highly interactive session will provide practical, realistic organizational development, compensation design, change management, internal communications, recruiting, marketing, all with real-world measurable results to influence leaders and help set company direction. 1) Prioritize work and say “no” without getting fired; 2) Access and use free tools and information related to recruiting, HR, and leadership; 3) Dig out from under the paperwork to influence leaders and help set company direction. Presenter: Franny Oxford, SPHR 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm: Influence Strategies for HR Professionals (Pre-approved for 3 Strategic Recertification Credits) HR professionals are constantly challenged to help improve their organization’s capabilities by delivering effective people management practices at all levels of the organization. Among the many skills required to accomplish this is the ability to influence individuals and groups in varying situations. In most cases this must be accomplished where the HR professional has little or no direct control related to the situation. It is also important for managers to understand how other people and situations influence them. This workshop will provide a greater understanding of personal motive preferences, the preferences of others, and application of this dynamic toward becoming more effective in influencing specific work situations. At the core of this workshop are nine specific influence tactics that – when used appropriately--can have a positive impact on the achievement of organizational objectives. Presenter: Dr. Robert K. Prescott, Ph.D., SPHR, Associate Professor of Human Resource Management, Crummer Graduate School of Business, Rollins College 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm: How HR Should Use Social Media to Meet Strategic Objectives (Pre-approved for 3 Strategic Recertification Credits) This session will demystify social media, show exactly how HR professionals are using it today... including high profile case studies. After this session, HR professionals will: 1.) Better understand social media best practices; 2) Learn to leverage social media to straighten their corporate brand; and 3) Understand the tie between social media and employee engagement.Presenter: William Tincup, BA, MA, MBA, Co-owner, Starr Tincup 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm: HR Metrics: Speaking the Language of Profitability, The Next Level (Pre-approved for 3 Strategic Recertification Credits) HR professionals who are already using HR metrics may still encounter issues in capturing the attention of non-HR executives. It is critical that HR be seen as a profit driver – not a cost center – and uses metrics that “speak” to executives in language they understand. 1) Understand the concept of organizational strategic objectives and competitive advantage, and the competencies HR managers need in order for HR to be viewed as a profit driver rather than a cost center. 2) Understand how to align the HR Mission and strategic objectives with the organization’s Mission and strategic objectives. This is especially relevant as the economic recovery begins. Participants will audit their current HR Mission and strategic objectives to evaluate their alignment. 3) Examine the HR metrics you currently use, evaluate their strategic relevance, and begin to identify other HR measurements that are strategically aligned with organizational objectives. Understand how to communicate the numbers that will engage the attention of your executives. Participants will work on case studies throughout. Presenter: Patricia Mathews, MBA, Consultant 3 To register, visit www.hrfloridaconference.org
