7. Enclosure Dynamic Power Capping
• The power used by an individual server can be capped
− The cap can be set below the peak
− If the computational load requires more power than the cap,
performance will be constrained.
• Power usage varies by load.
− A server at idle may draw 40-50% less than at peak load.
− Aggregate power usage (for a group) is less than the sum of the
peaks
• Enclosure Dynamic Power Capping:
− Allows you to apply a cap (power budget) to a group of servers.
− The power budget applies to the group.
− Busy servers “borrow” power usage rights from idle servers.
− Each server gets enough to deliver the necessary performance
− The aggregate power usage is maintained within the budget

8. Power as a resource
• Measure server power
consumption
• Cap servers based on
measurements
• Workload changes with
time
• Change the power caps
− Busy servers get more power
− Idle servers get less

22. HP Virtual Connect with Flex-10 technology is the simplest,
most powerful connection to your networks
• Simplify networks
− Reduce cables up to 94% without adding switches to manage
• Simplify server connections
− Makes system administrator self-sufficient and frees LAN and SAN
admins from common server tasks
• Change servers in minutes, not days
− Add, move and replace servers on-the-fly without affecting your
LAN and SAN
− Total control to move workloads fast without impacting LANs or
SANs or the people who manage them.
• Tailor network speeds based on application needs
New!
− Reduce cables and network components by using up to 4 physical
NIC's per 10Gb server connection
− Control and manage your bandwidth by setting NIC speeds at the
server edge
23. HP Innovation
HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module
• First single-wide blade10Gb Ethernet Module
• First to divide a single network port into 4 separate connections with
full hardware performance
• First to fine tune each network connection dynamically from 100Mb
to 10Gb.
• First to optimize performance to the demands of virtual server
workloads and network channels
• First to support up to 24 network connections on a single half height
server blade
• First extension of HP’s award winning Virtual Connect architecture
and the first to be built-in to a server blade.
24. Divide and Fine Tune
• What is “Flex-10” technology?
− Two components:
• 10Gb Server NIC’s that can be carved into multiple individual
FlexNIC’s
− Each FlexNIC is recognized by server ROM as an individual
NIC.
− The Bandwidth for each FlexNIC is user defined from 100Mb
to 10Gb.
• HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module
− The first and only Interconnect Module that manages the
server connections to the data center network
− Recognizes and manages each FlexNIC as part of a server
profile
25. Flexible NIC Technology
• Evolve to 10Gb at your own speed
− Flex-10 10Gb NIC's are PCI Physical Function devices
− OS independent
− Server ROM recognizes them as individual NIC's
− Speeds can be set per NIC from 100Mb to 10Gb in 100Mb
increments
