Folk songs-pptx
Folk songs are songs sung in the
traditional style of a community or
country. Here the
traditional style includes the themes,
words and tunes of the songs that have
existed
for a long time among the common
people.
We have a rich history and collection of
folk songs in Bangladesh. Of them
Palligiti,
Bhatiali, Bhawaiya, Jari, Sari, Gambhira,
Lalongiti, Palagaan and songs of Hason
Raja are very popular. The traditional
musical instruments are usually played

Gambhira (Bengali: গম্ভীরা) is a type of song
(originating in Chapai Nawabganj, in the
Northern region of Bangladesh). It is
performed with a particularly distinctive
rhythm and dance with two performers,
always personifying a man and his
maternal grandfather, discussing a topic
to raise social awareness. This kind of
song is also quite popular in Malda of
West Bengal, India. Gombhira also refers
to a dance form practised in districts of
south dinajpur and kuchbihar. Various
masks are curved out from wooden
pieces and the dancers wear the masks
while performing the Gombhira dance.
Jari: songs involving
musical battle between
two groups
•Ghazal: Popularity of folk music of Sufi genres: introduction of
philosophy and religion in music.
•Baul: mainly inspired by Lalon Fokir and almost exclusively performed by
hermits.
Lalon: best known of all folk
songs and the most import
subgenre of Baul songs,
almost entirely attributed to
spiritual writer and composer,
Lalon Fokir of Kushtia. He is
known to all in West Bengal
of India too.(Western
Bangladesh, near the border
with West Bengal).
Hason Raja: devotional
songs written by a music
composer by the name of
Hason Raja (from Sylhet,
northeastern side of
Bangladesh near Assam)
that was recently
repopularised as dance
Jatra Pala: songs associated
exclusively with plays (performed
on-stage). Usually involves
colourful presentations of
historical themes.
Bhandari: devotional
music from the South
(mainly Chittagong).
Dhamail: a form of folk music and dance
originated in Sylhet, Bangladesh. It is
practiced in the erstwhile district of Sylhet
in Bangladesh and in areas influenced by
the Sylheti culture such as Cachar, parts of
Shillong, Karimganj and Hailakandi
Districts of Assam, parts of Tripura in India.
Kirtan: devotional song
depicting love of Hindu god
Krishno and his (best-known)
wife, Radha.
Kavigan: poems sung with
simple music usually
presented on stage as a
musical battle between poets.
Shyama Sangeet: a genre of Bengali
devotional songs dedicated to the
Hindu goddess Shyama or Kali
which is a form of supreme
universal mother-goddess Durga or
parvati. It is also known as
Instruments used in folk
songs of
Bangladesh…………
Sita
rThe sitar Englishpronunciation: /ˈsɪtɑr/ or /sɪˈtɑr/ is a
plucked stringed instrument used mainly in
Hindustani music and Indian classical music.
The instrument is believed to have been
derived from the veena, an ancient Indian
instrument, which was modified by a Mughal
court musician to conform with the tastes of
his Persian patrons and named after a
Persian instrument called the Setar (meaning
"three strings"). The sitar flourished in the
16th and 17th centuries and arrived at its
present form in 18th century India. It derives
its distinctive timbre and resonance from
sympathetic strings, bridge design, a long
hollow neck and a gourd resonating
chamber. In appearance, the Sitar is similar to
the Tambura, except it has frets. The body of
Sitar is more or less a spherical gourd at the
lower end.
Ektara
Ektara (Bengali: একতারা, Punjabi: ਇਕ ਤਾਰਾ; literally "one-
string", also called iktar, ektar, yaktaro gopichand, tun
tuna ) is a one-string instrument most often used in
traditional music from Bangladesh, India, Egypt, and
Pakistan.
In origin the ektara was a regular string instrument of
wandering bards and minstrels from India and is plucked
with one finger. The ektara is a drone lute consisting of a
gourd resonator covered with skin, through which a
bamboo neck is inserted
Dotara
The dotara (or dotar) (Bengali: দ াতারা) is a two or four or some times five stringed
musical instrument resembling more to mandolin than a guitar. It is commonly used in
Assam, Bangladesh, West Bengal & Bihar, and dates from the 15th-16th century when it
was adopted by the ascetic cults of Bauls and Fakirs.
Flute
•The flute is a family of musical instrument of the woodwind group. Unlike woodwind
instruments with reeds, a flute is an aerophone or reedless wind instrument that
produces its sound from the flow of air across an opening. According to the instrument
classification of Hornbostel–Sachs, flutes are categorized as edge-blown aerophones.
The dhak (Bengali: ঢাক) is a huge
membranophone instrument from South Asia. The
shapes differ from the almost cylindrical to the
barrel. The manner of stretching the hide over the
mouths and lacing also varies. It suspended from
the neck, tied to the waist and kept on the lap or
the ground, and usually played with wooden
sticks. The left side is coated to give it a heavier
sound.
