1. The opportunity truly spans this software continuum across platforms, and unifying across OS’s and applications & services frameworks.
2. Our cadence continues on-time to our standard 2-year cycle, upholding the promise of Moore’s law <click> We’re making great headway w/ 32nm Uses 2ND generation high-k + metal gate transistors We have our first functional 32nm SRAM array wafer 32nm 291 Mbit SRAM chips with >1.9B transistors Memory cell about half the size of 45nm cell Critical milestone in march toward high-vol. mfg. – next “tick”
3. Slide Purpose: Discuss Refresh Rate of our laptops. Key Message: Another key decision around setting our standards for PC technology is how often do we upgrade them? Shortly after we decided on what to buy as a standard (the rich mobile client) we tried to hold on to our laptops too long to (again) minimize capital costs. This also created issues for us – both for our users (productivity declines) and ourselves (IT, in increased support costs) Following some recent analysis (Feb 09) we found that after 3 yrs, user productivity tests showed marked declines in laptop response times after 3 years and at 5 years, the laptop is 50% slower for standard user application workloads AND that after three years, we saw a dramatic increase in support costs (extended warranty costs, driver failures, increased security breeches, application conflict errors, etc) increasing helpdesk costs. .. See slide in detailed employee solutions section. As a result we have found that 3 year refresh cadence provides lowest total cost of ownership However, we vary our implementation based on user type. We implement PC refresh differently depending on the user type, every 2-4 years Talking points: 2yr: customer facing, road warrior 3yr: power users – engineering users … decision to upgrade laptop is more aligned to design cycle more than it is laptop life – we upgrade as they switch projects vs. mid project 4yr: everyone else office workers
4. Slide Purpose: Identify a Key Learning around PC Fleet Management. Don’t Skimp up front. It only affects you negatively later. Key Message: We made a $40 million dollar PC mistake. And now a key lesson for us. A key mistake that Intel IT made several years ago was in the choice of what PCs to buy our employees. In an effort to further reduce PC TCO, we shifted our purchasing toward low-end PCs. The premise was that procuring lower-cost platforms for general use was the best economic decision. This was flawed logic. What made this worse was a change A change in strategy to provide Quicker availability of latest software. Intel IT decided that software and operating systems needed to be delivered to internal customers much more quickly than originally anticipated. IT developed a strategy called GA+90-general availability plus 90 days. This means delivering operating systems (OS) and office software on computers 90 days after they are available in the general marketplace. The low-end client systems that had been deployed were not capable of running upgraded operating systems and office software within their depreciation lifetime. As a result, Intel IT had to prematurely upgrade almost 20,000 clients around the company, at a cost of nearly $40 million in capital. ----------------------------------- Here’s an example of when we got it wrong. A key mistake that Intel IT made several years ago was in the choice of computers to buy. Historically, Intel IT’s standard PCs lagged the technology roadmap. The premise was that procuring lower-cost platforms for general use was the best economic decision. In 1996 and 1997, we discovered that we were actually shortening the useful life of our assets by not buying high enough. At the time, it wasn’t clear how we were going to use the increasing power on the desktop, and we really wanted to focus on driving our costs down. However, this strategy turned out to be shortsighted. An after-the-fact evaluation revealed the two factors that hurt the most: 1. A known constraint: Four-year depreciation cycle. From an accounting standpoint, Intel IT needs to use assets for four years to get the full value out of them. 2. A change in strategy: Quicker availability of latest software. Intel IT decided that software and operating systems needed to be delivered to internal customers much more quickly than originally anticipated. IT developed a strategy called GA+90-general availability plus 90 days. This means delivering operating systems (OS) and office software on computers 90 days after they are available in the general marketplace. The combination of the depreciation constraint and GA+90 strategy created a problem during 1996-97. The client systems that had been deployed were not capable of running upgraded operating systems and office software within their depreciation lifetime. As a result, Intel IT had to prematurely upgrade almost 20,000 clients around the company, at a cost of nearly $40 million in capital.

8. What is it? Technology that dynamically uses thermal and power headroom to boost additional CPU and/or integrated GPU frequencies Available with new Intel® Core™ i7 and i5 processors Key takeaway : Intel ® Turbo Boost Technology is a new feature unique to the Intel ® Core™ i7 and i5 processors based on Intel’s latest microarchitecture. This technology intelligently dials up the processor speed to deliver optimal performance for power-hungry tasks—effectively maximizing performance to match workload. What is it? Intel ® Turbo Boost Technology enables one or more processing cores to operate on a higher frequency above the TDP frequency when headroom exists. This enables the processor to automatically and transparently increase processor performance based on application intensity. The processor does this intelligently and automatically, without user intervention. How does it work? When the operating system is confronted with a compute-intensive task, such as processing complex game physics or a real-time preview of a multimedia edit, it requests more power from the CPU. The CPU will determine if it is already operating at its overall power, current, and temperature limits. If it has headroom to spare, it will incrementally increase the frequency of active core(s) to handle the current task faster. How to explain it The easiest way to explain the benefit of Intel ® Turbo Boost Technology is to compare it to the heater in a car. In normal mode, the heater delivers a certain amount of heat through both the dash and floor vents. When you shut off the floor vents, it can use the extra power to deliver more heat through the dash. In the same way, the Intel ® Core™ i7 processor is configured to deliver a certain amount of power to each core. However, if one or more cores is not using that power, the processor can automatically and intelligently divert extra power to the operating core. The result is the operating core can run at a higher than normal frequency and complete its tasks faster. Benefits for consumers Intelligently accelerates performance to match your workload, so you can enjoy the maximum possible speed Optimizes processor (CPU and integrated graphics) performance intelligently and automatically, without user intervention
9. Intel Hyper-threading technology helps you do more and wait less because it’s like having a freeway with multiple car lanes instead of just one.
10. Having multiple lanes means more cars – or information – can move more quickly. And by doubling the number of processor threads per core with Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology we support the kind of advanced multi-tasking that is fast becoming mainstream for every user. Let’s take a look at an example…

13. vPro redefines strong transition and innovating exactly where IT cares: Amazing feat and architecture & process technology merged Bringing quad-threading to business platform for first time Best gfx performing part Intel has ever made – leapfrogging 3 process technologies from McCreary Smarter, energy-efficient performance: Higher Integration, Leading Performance with Lower Power 38% less idle power saving IT real $s. Lower idle power has been seen on IT bids Integrating Manageability and Security Intel Anti-theft tech: intelligence built-in the PC to detect potential theft and respond based on IT policy Intel is extending support for virtualization with Westmere based notebook and desktop platforms with the next gen virtualization technologies for improved performance. Earlier this year, we announced plans with Citrix to productize a client-based hypervisor, WHICH would leverage some aspects of AMT and leverage TXT & VT to establish a trusted and secure foundation for the hypervisor to land...AND realized the benefits of a client hypervisor solution. The benefits include image delivery. Delivering the entire OS and apps bundled into a VM down to the client or a VM with the OS and stream the apps to the VM. This image delivery allows the virtualization between the layers of the compute stack that we mentioned earlier in the presentation. Off network mobility...There are TWO aspects to off network mobility. The first is what we all know is the ability to unplug your notebook and take your work with you. The second is the ability to be productive without the need to ALWAYS be connected to the network and alleviate network bandwidth tax of being CONSTANTLY connected. Low Data Center Build Out Costs...because the VM is delivered down to the client...expensive server farm build out is not needed...can add more here. Local compute and graphics performance...the ability to have near native performance for the responsiveness that the users need and require. Excellent security...as we have discussed previously...TXT and VT make vPro the virtualization platform of choice.
14. Key takeaway: The new Intel ® Processor Rating System 1 is designed to streamline the decision-making process for customers, and may help to simplify the RSP’s job as well. This new system can help customers make purchase decisions by providing an at-a-glance tool that rates one Intel ® processor versus another. It can also help sales personnel by providing visual support when recommending a PC with a better (more highly rated) processor inside. Go deeper Each star in the Processor Features Rating system represents a combination of features and capabilities, such as cores and frequency. Actual processor and system performance will vary according to usage and software, as well as the features, specifications, and configuration of the entire system. However, more features and greater capability may indeed lead to a better customer experience. More stars mean more processor features and increased capabilities compared to other Intel ® processors—simple, straightforward, and effective. 1 Ratings are based on features of the processor including, cores, threads, GHz, cache, and other features; Platform brand rating based on underlying processor.

16. Key takeaway: In the past several years, we’ve developed and improved an exciting range of mobile processor technologies designed to meet the needs of today’s customers. Make sure you focus on the consumer value benefits of today’s PC and help customers discover the difference and identify the most suitable mobile device that meets their needs. Empower consumers to engage, collaborate, share, and ultimately upgrade from their old PCs . Ask customers about what they want to do with their portable devices to help determine the best fit for their lifestyles. Go Deeper MIDs : MIDs are great for Early Adopters and Middle Adopters who seek out innovative, handheld technology that lets them stay connected and entertained while on the go. Netbooks : Netbooks are designed for customers who can benefit from a companion Internet device. They are not designed to replace a laptop or become a primary PC. If your customer is reasonably confident that they are just looking for a device for simple online usages like the ones we’ve discussed, then netbooks are a fantastic choice. However, in some cases, a laptop might be a better investment for the future. Netbooks are ideal for Early Adopters and Middle Adopters who want great Internet performance and multitasking capabilities in addition to their laptops. The netbook is great for Late Adopters who need basic Internet access without the full PC experience. Ask potential netbook customers these questions to help make sure they are choosing the right portable: Is this their first device for using the Internet? Help them understand that netbooks are a great introduction to computing, but a full-featured laptop offers more possibilities as they expand their knowledge and comfort level. Think of it as future-proofing their purchase. Do they have a child leaving for college in the near future? Even if their current usage is restricted to simple online usages around the home or while traveling, children’s computing needs grow exponentially when they move on to higher education. Purchasing a laptop now gives the parent the option of sending it along for the educational ride. Do they foresee any multitasking in the future? There are many examples, but generally the greater processing power of a laptop will make for a better multitasking experience. The Internet is a limitless source of content – do they foresee uploading to or downloading from the Web? If so they’ll need the storage capabilities of a laptop . Almost as limitless is the supply of software applications. If they think they’ll want to load applications in the future, they’ll need a laptop . Thin and Light Laptop : With the new Thin and Light laptop offering, we extend the ultra-thin to every price point. They’re thinner and lighter, with small form-factor packaging and low power usage. They offer full-performance at mainstream price points; and they are powered with industry-leading battery life. Early Adopters and Middle Adopters need small form factor laptops for travel and overall portability. They’re also interested in the aesthetics of Thin and Light laptops. The Late Adopter wants a Thin and Light laptop based on its simplicity and mainstream pricing. Laptop : A laptop is the most robust mobile solution . Laptops are usually the best choice for most customers looking for a full PC experience with the flexibility to take it on the go, or move it around at home. Make sure that customers understand that a new PC offers blazing-fast performance, ultimate connectivity, and everything the Internet has to offer. Compared to a PC of just three or four years ago, a 2009 laptop powered by an Intel ® processor lets customers: Prepare photos and convert to video over 3 times faster 1 Have better playback when streaming HD TV, movies, and video through the Internet Convert music for their iPod* up to 3 times faster 1 Convert HD video for their mobile phone up to 2.5 times faster 1 Auto-enhance photos up to 2 times faster 1 Laptops are great for Early Adopters who rely on a robust PC experience everywhere they go. The Middle Adopter will love the laptop’s flexibility, mobility, and multitasking capabilities at work or home. The Late Adopter is interested in t he laptop, now that many of her friends have one, as a second home computer to organize her family photos and burn them to DVD. 1 Disclaimer: Performance measured using our standard suite of software workload testing across various applications and digital media usages. Test were run on a range of 2009 Intel-based laptops and desktops compared to a 2005 Pentium M-based laptop and a 2005 Pentium-based desktop.
