Gregory Espy considers himself highly active as he burns 4000-5000 calories per day through 18 credit hours of classes, a full-time overnight job, weekly exercise including jogging, lifting, golfing, basketball, and walking with his dogs. He enjoys traveling quarterly within the US and abroad annually. Espy believes in always being proactive, such as meal planning, and treating others as you want to be treated to build strong relationships. His professional philosophies are to do jobs right the first time to allow more time for self-improvement and to ask questions if unsure rather than assume and risk doing something incorrectly.
2. The ME
I consider myself a highly active person, because I am inactive only 6 hours maximum each day Monday thru Thursday (have
to sleep at some point). This semester I am taking 18 hours of class and work full time overnight in a distribution center. On a
good day I get a 2 hour nap between 7AM and 9AM, and a 4 hour nap between 4PM and 8PM. I do consider driving and
school minimally active since I am burning more calories relative to sleeping. Overall I have calculated I burn 4000-5000
calories per day.
I enjoy each of the following:
Weekly Exercising: Jogging 6-9 miles, lifting weights 2-3 hours, golfing 18 holes, working 40-48 hours, playing basketball 1
hour, walking an additional 3 miles
Weekly activities in the outdoors: Golf, walking/& or jogging with two dogs, 3 mile runs on Saturday mornings.
Participate and lead some activates at a free fit camp on Sunday afternoon.
Yearly traveling: Weekend road trips quarterly to St. Louis MO., Clear Water FL, Austin TX(where
family lives) & some unique destinations. Also, yearly week long vacations to one of the
following; New York, San Francisco, Mexico (& more to come.)
Being around people: As an adult, I am not not worried about what people think about me
personally. I will voice my “2 cents” expectation, feedback, constructive criticism, and personal
experiences. Also, I enjoy the same information back from others because I thrive on trying to
get better at everything I do. I don’t force myself to be the leader, but will take that role if a
suitable leader is not available.
3. Personal Philosophy #: 1 “ABP” Always Be
Proactive.
- I have to be proactive to maintain a healthily lifestyle. A big way to stay healthy, other
that exercise, is to eat healthy food. Every night my wife and I talk and plan what we are
going to eat for the next day, for that whole day, not just one meal.
- This resonates with me because, since we have been doing our meal preparation I have
lost 85 pounds over the past year and a half.
- In order to do so, I have to plan what I am going to eat at least a day in advance. Other
wise, fast food will start to be the only option because I don’t have anything I’ve
prepared to eat.
- Because of my weight loss I sleep better than ever. I rarely wake up while sleeping, which
use to be a nightly occurrence. With better sleep I have more energy the next day to
exercise and play sports with friends. The better I eat, the better I sleep, which leads to
more exercise, which all drives up my motivation to keep doing this for the rest of my
life.
4. Personal Philosophy #: 2 To build strong
relationships, you need to treat everyone just like
you want to be treated by them.
- Growing up, I heard the second part of this statement in church, at home, and
at school. I wanted to take it a step further because I believe relationships are a
building block for a healthy and active life.
- This resonates with be because when I give respect, and I do not get it back, I
know that is usually someone I do not want in my everyday life.
- One time while getting my hair cut and being good-mannered and polite I was
able to get a much needed job in high school. I did not know I was getting my
hair cut from the owner, but at check out she offered me a job to be a cashier,
so the stylist could spend more time on cutting hair. I am still in contact with
her to this day.
- The benefits you gain cannot be calculated. It will give you a positive intrinsic
feeling when you gain a new friend, mentor and work out buddy. You spirts
will be up, stress will be down, you will laugh and socialize more often.
5. Professional Philosophy #: 1 . If you are not
going to do the job right, don’t do it at all.
- I see it everyday. Please being lazy, putting things off for others to do etc.
Besides a poor work evaluation these types of behaviors can lead to weight
gain and poor social relationships with co-workers.
- Obesity is out of control in our country. If we do things right the first time it
will allow for more time at work for trying to better ourselves personal and
professional through training, education, and possible group activities.
- If I emphasis hard work ethic, and always completing your task, it can teach
employees that they do have the skills to do task then never thought they
could. In turn, they can use this philosophy in their personal life to achieve
physical, and health goals they are trying to reach. I want them to be
motivated everyday.
- I plan to combat this issue by giving routine and accurate evaluations of my
employees. This will let them know if they are doing things right, and let them
see what they are doing wrong. Then together we will set up goals going
forward.
6. Professional Philosophy #: 2 “Time out” ( if you not
sure…stop, and find out by getting with you trainer/
supervisor on the companies policy.)
- To many times we are all guilty of assuming we know the right answer,
policy, or way to do a task. When our assumptions are wrong, it leads to
stress, more work, and less free time for recreation.
- Anxiety can form from not being sure about something, and also when
you have to wait and see if what you did was wrong.
- Anxiety can lead to stress and to much stress can be a huge health hazard
both directly and indirectly.
- If we take a “Time out” and go ask questions to insure we are doing things
correctly it will end up being a win/win for you and your company. It
shows your boss you can see and can acknowledge when you don’t know
exactly what to do. It also shows you are willing to ask for help. This shows
you want to succeed, and if you succeed your boss will succeed.
7. Conclusion
- This core philosophy have gotten me to where I am today. I may have lost
sight of them during my late teens and early twenties, but once I have
found the true value of them my life keeps getting better.
- I found that when I stick to these philosophies good things happen, and
they happen when I least except it, which also increase the value.
- Going forward I want to tell my story and be a recourse for people of all
ages, ethnicities and genders. The more I can make people successful the
more successful I will be in the long run.
